some hyper famous artists like Van Gogh transcend overratedness and become underrated because they're so normalized. Like I'll look at a van Gogh and I'm like wait this really is amazing you guys don't get it
Shakespeare is like this
Every time I see a Van Gogh that’s not one of his better known pieces it absolutely blows me away
Have you seen this shit my liege? smh unreal

I always feel so cheated in stories when characters are walking around with this Big Guilt and then...you find out that the thing wasn't their fault at all. And not in a "they thought they did it but it turns out they were set up" way, or even a "accepting that just because they did A which caused B which caused C it doesn't mean C was their fault", way but where they finally lay out the sequence of events and it's clear that any thinking person would not connect them. Like, fucking commit!!! The character isn't LESS compelling if they actually did the thing! You can't have the haunted brooding meow meow who is...also completely blameless
Ok listen
This tweet read me to filth

my general opinion on what people should be "allowed" to portray and what topics they should be "allowed" to explore in fiction is that you can make whatever art with whatever themes you want but i'm also allowed to think the way you handled it was tasteless and should've been done differently. my negative opinion on your handling of sensitive topics is the price of admission for publicly showcasing your work. this is not a pro-censorship stance because i am not The Government
this is getting really popular so i’d like to add the important caveat that your criticism of a work is no more unassailable than the work itself. just as one is entitled to be critical of something someone else is entitled to disagree with that criticism. i add this because some of you pretend to give a fuck about thoughtful analysis and then when someone points out flaws in your argument you declare that all criticisms are valid. this is untrue. the status of a hater is no more sacred than that of a liker. get off your high horse and engage in the thoughtful discussion you pretend to believe in or perish by my blade
The first time Mama Cass sees Janis live is iconic.
We had friends staying last night so we made some nice food including these amaretti (made because one of our friends is gluten free.) They were so good - crisp on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside (the biscuits that is, not the friends!) We served them with roasted peaches and vanilla ice cream.
I used this recipe, but I only had 200g of ground almonds in the house so I scaled down the other ingredients to fit with that
Amaretti are small and perfectly formed. These are great with coffee or as an after dinner treat.
History is so good for nosy people
There’s a quality that certain books/movies/TV shows have that leads me to say, “Yeah, I can see people making fanfiction of that.” It’s something to do, I think, with how tight the story is, how much feels open-ended or like it could be elaborated on.
Something like Breaking Bad, for example, has low squiggability (that’s what I’m calling this quality). It’s tightly written, the characters are consistent, there’s little left to interpolate or extrapolate. Obviously, people DO write fanfic of Breaking Bad, but it still has a low squiggability score. Whereas something like Supernatural has a high squiggability score. Fantasy and science fiction often have high squiggability scores. This suggests squiggability could also be related to worldbuilding and potential for people to borrow a premise or setting.
And sometimes you’ll read or watch something and you’ll say, “Ah, low squiggability,” and then you’ll open tumblr and find out that everyone else seem to think its squiggability was very high indeed.

Fulvio Rinaldi, L'orologio, tempera, 1995
This reminds me of a Marilynne Robinson quote:
You have to have a certain detachment in order to see beauty for yourself rather than something that has been put in quotation marks to be understood as “beauty”. Think about Dutch painting, where sunlight is falling on a basin of water and a woman is standing there in the clothes that she would wear when she wakes up in the morning—that beauty is a casual glimpse of something very ordinary. […] You also get that in Edward Hopper: Look at the sunlight! or Look at the human being! These are instances of genius. Cultures cherish artists because they are people who can say, Look at that. And it’s not Versailles. It’s a brick wall with a ray of sunshine falling on it.

americans be like dude learning to drive isnt that bad but they dont know youre in ireland sharing a lane with a horse who is a bad person. And the horse and the instructor are friends and he keeps dapping the horse up through the window. And the horse called you a bitch under his breath so quiet the driving instructor is trying to convince you that you must have misheard him but you didnt. and theres a roundabout coming up and the horse didnt indicate
Back when hockey romance was really becoming a Thing I saw a very funny TikTok where the real-life wife or girlfriend of a hockey player read an angsty passage from a book that went something like “the hardest part of loving him was watching him go out on the ice, knowing he could get hurt every time” and she was like “NO!!! The hardest part is all the carb loading! Do you know how much FUCKING PASTA I MAKE—“ and yes I did think about that during the cottage episode of Heated Rivalry

I say it all the time but Rachel Reid is funny. The road/rhodes scholar comment with Shane and Hayden is one of my all time favorites, second only to Ilya saying “Cliff can barely count to three” during all-stars in TLG which leads to one of my favorite problematic headcanons which is that both Ilya and Shane have like not-like-other-girls/chosen one attributes of being smarter than all the hockey players around them. Not like, book smart or anything, but just like foundational knowledge.
