âThe plain fact is that the planet does not need more successful people. But it does desperately need more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of every kind. It needs people who live well in their places. It needs people of moral courage willing to join the fight to make the world habitable and humane. And these qualities have little to do with success as we have defined it.âÂ
David Orr, from here.
Thereâs a part of me that likes shoes, and likes dresses, and likes makeup, and likes books, and likes to write. I think thatâs the case for many women. But our culture makes us think we have to choose slices of ourselves that weâre comfortable showing the world.
Ms. Adichie

You have written that women who practice surveillance on themselves are the âheroines of our time,â but itâs precisely these womenâreal and fictionalâwho are accused of the sin of narcissism, as if a woman looking at herself (rather than being looked at by a man) was insulting to everyone. How do you understand this charge?
Iâve never felt narcissism to be a sin. It seems, rather, a cognitive tool that, like all cognitive tools, can be used in a distorted way. No, I think itâs necessary to be absolutely in love with ourselves. Itâs only by reflecting on myself with attention and care that I can reflect on the world. Itâs only by turning my gaze on myself that I can understand others, feel them as my kin. On the other hand itâs only by assiduously watching myself that I can take control and train myself to give the best of myself. The woman who practices surveillance on herself without letting herself be the object of surveillance is the great innovation of our times.

âDocument the moments you feel most in love with yourself - what youâre wearing, who youâre around, what youâre doing. Recreate and repeat.â - Warsan Shire
âI love myself when I am laughing. And then again when I am looking mean and impressive.â - Zora Neale Hurston, from here.
The winter is coming. Swims in the wild, east coast sea will soon come to an end. Do you already feel the nostalgia? If so, a small cure.Â
To replicate the sensation of swimming in and out of cold pockets in an otherwise temperate sea, simply drop one cube of ice into a glass of just-drawn tap water and let your tongue, lips, teeth and inner cheeks wade through.Â
A treat for the inner body, instead of the skin.Â
Knowing that the bees are dying of anxiety, I feel a thrill whenever I see one, hovering above a flower. I feel proud. Like Iâm cheering on an adolescent, running in the school track meet, fully on display, while his world is conspiring against him, giving him pimples, possibly braces, an awkward, fruit-shaped body, and there that same world is, hovering above him, in the bleachers, watching him try to simply do his job.Â
Do you push up your titsÂ
for the moon?
Do you straighten your hair
for the song of a bird?
Do you line your eyes
for those underwater dives,
your lids on displayÂ
for the anemone?
Do you zip up your closest denim
for the benefit of the rose bush
behind you?
And if not, why?
Who treats you better than
the sea, the sand, the sky.Â
These humid summer months will make you hyper-aware of water. The sound of it, the feel of it, on your skin and down your throat. The look of it, too: you perk up to the fire hydrant, the water fountain, the bird bathing in the puddle.Â
When you are out of love, you try to get in love everywhere. You try to get in love through the kissing couple, on the street and on the screen. Through that song in your head. Through that book in your lap.
In August, in New York, you try to get into water in the same ways you try to get into love in the fall, winter, almost spring, here.Â

âWhen our souls are happy,â Charles Simic has written, âthey talk about food.â
ny times
Samâs breakfast called from the bottom of her stomach.
"Hello?" said Sam.
"Come down here," said breakfast: two eggs, four Nilla Wafers and one large white pill.
Sam sat down on the kitchen floor, Indian style. Her head where her stomach stood before she sat down.
"Just lie here with me for a little while, before itâs time for lunch."
(a repost of an old vignette with the perfect image)
Not speaking and speaking are both human ways of being in the world, and there are kinds and grades of each. There is the dumb silence of slumber or apathy; the sober silence that goes with a solemn animal face; the fertile silence of awareness, pasturing the soul, whence emerge new thoughts; the alive silence of alert perception, ready to say, âThis⌠thisâŚâ; the musical silence that accompanies absorbed activity; the silence of listening to another speak, catching the drift and helping him be clear; the noisy silence of resentment and self-recrimination, loud and subvocal speech but sullen to say it; baffled silence; the silence of peaceful accord with other persons or communion with the cosmos.
Paul Goodman, BrainpickingsÂ

Most of the fair-skinned fruits resented the citruses. Built to be tossed and juggled and backpacked around all day, then return home intact. No checking for bruises or soft spots. No baths before bed. And when the time came to be enjoyed, they'd be hugged instead of sliced, peeled instead of skinned, juiced instead of jammed. Born into a better family tree.Â
"A sight, an emotion, creates this wave in the mind, long before it makes words to fit it."
Virginia Woolf
