CHARA INTRO: next up, lee hyeon. he's a 25yr old city boy, currently "visiting" yuseong bay (re: staying here indefinitely) to ride out some bad press, as he was an idol up until his group noisily disbanded in late 2023. he's always been interested in cars/had some mechanic experience so he's now the shop hand at park's garage. you can view his stats here & his pinterest here if interested!

kiha:

( ... ) the storm is starting to pick up outside, the sound of the rain getting strong enough that it's easy to hear it even with the buzzing of the ac on. it makes kiha a little more excited about their spooky movie, the storm being the exact reason why kiha proposed such activity in the first place. "i was thinking that we could watch when a stranger calls." because it's about a psychopath terrorizing someone in their own house, a plot that kiha feels fits the mood that they're going for. "what do you think?" he turns to hyeon while rearranging the blankets so it's less like a messy ball of fabrics in the middle of the bed and more like something that kiha can safely and cozily snuggle under.

truth be told, hyeon doesn't feel as safe in yuseong bay as he had felt in seoul. his fears probably have more to do with his mental state than anything of true substance, but the fact remains that he's been more paranoid than usual. as a result of this, he has his doubts as to whether or not watching a scary movie is a good idea; he's spent enough stormy nights and watched enough scary movies with kiha to know that in times of fear, they do nothing but feed each other's delusions. then again, he's never been known to make decisions based on whether or not they're good.

lightning strikes somewhere in the distance and a drawn out rumble of thunder follows. he thinks back to the old dorm, the room that he'd lived in with kiha, the tree that had scratched against their window when the wind caught it just the right way—for a second, he steps back in time, but then he's twenty-five again and the past is a world away. he's here with his stale pretzel sticks and slightly more developed critical thinking skills, but slightly less stability. "don't talk shit about my pretzels if you're gonna try to eat some later," he warns, but there's no weight to it and he's unable to hold back a smile.

the bag rustles as he opens it, evidently too impatient to wait for the start of the movie. "honestly, i think we could use one more blanket, if it's possible. you never know what could happen. some freak might show up outside the window threatening to kill us unless we give him all our blankets, and then we'd be shit out of luck. unless we happened to have a secret additional blanket, or maybe even two secret additional blankets, out of sight. and we could grab those when he leaves. i'm just saying." with that outlandish suggestion out there, he bites into a stale pretzel stick and stares at kiha expectantly, as if daring him to challenge the theory.

he sits on the edge of the bed, rolls the pretzel bag closed and sets it on the bedside table. he tilts his head side to side until his neck has popped on both sides. "that sounds good to me," he agrees, kicking his legs up onto the mattress. he's quick to pull one of the blankets from the pile that kiha has just rearranged; for now, he only covers his feet with it. god forbid some demon (or hidden intruder) grabs them when kiha (hopefully) leaves the room to get another blanket.

harin:

( ... ) she doesn't remember telling hyeon if she was looking for a job, but that's because well, she's not. "i'm not looking for one though." there's a brief moment of silence before she asks, "what kind of job do you think i could do around here?" she's not looking for an advice, but she figures it wouldn't hurt to hear hyeon's two cents now that he brings it up.

he had been comfortable before. but now there's something heavy and awkward hanging in the air between himself and harin—an acknowledgement that he'd sort of overstepped, maybe. all of a sudden, his shoulders feel tense with regret. he flexes his fingers, grip tightening and then loosening just as fast on the steering wheel.

"oh," he responds, short and simple. he wonders if she feels offended, and then he wonders if he should care if she does. lately, everything is like this in hyeon's world: he feels out of control and confused, like some faded photograph of a person who no longer exists. the nameless pop song comes to an end; as it does, he reaches to turn the volume down.

"i mean, if you wanted to, you could probably work at that boutique in town. i don't know if they're hiring, but it seems like they keep pretty up to date with trends, and... uh, you're... fashionable?" he ends the stream of thought with some half-cough, half-throat clearing hybrid. he used to be more charismatic than this, he recalls; once upon a time, he would've known what to say. he reaches for that version of himself, but it keeps slipping away.

still, he feigns nonchalance. taps his fingers on the steering wheel to the beat of the song playing now, volume too low to really make out what it is, but it's a better focal point than his thoughts. ready to put an end to his overthinking, he adds, "but if you don't need or want a job, then i guess there's no need to get one. i started working when i was really young, and my mom always told me i should slow down because when i got older, i'd have my whole life to work—but i was stubborn as hell. started working too soon, and haven't stopped since."

a pause, then, "i guess what i'm saying is there's nothing wrong with taking time for yourself."

they're riding in hyeon's mclaren with the top down. it's mid-afternoon; the sunlight is overly warm, but the wind makes up for it. there's a pop song playing on the radio that hyeon can't identify, and it doesn't suit his tastes. but he lets it play because he thinks it might suit harin's; and for now, he's considerate of things like that because he hasn't yet determined a reason not to be. she's a reflection in a cracked mirror—he knows that there's something wrong with her because it bears a resemblance to what's wrong with him, and he hasn't figured out if it's something that he's okay with or not. so he sits beside this girl who may or may not be a friend and he doesn't ask her any important questions, like if she even likes this fucking song or if she even likes him.

his foot presses the pedal a little further. they're on the outskirts of town, so he doesn't think twice about speeding. pedestrians are non-existent out here and there's no wildlife prominent enough to scare him into slowing; but out of pre-determined consideration for his company, the speed tapers to a calm cruise. voice raised just enough to be clear through the sound of the wind, he asks, "have you found a job yet?" without even knowing if she's looking for one. meaningless small talk, bait. he's not sure if she's the type to take it and turn the conversation into something more substantial, but he hopes she is.

hyeon has always been impressed by baby. but, having met when they were both still active idols, he did have some preconceived notions about her: assuming that she would be a diva, assuming that she would want nothing to do with him, assuming that she would be high maintenance and difficult to deal with. for this reason, it was a while before he actually tried to get to know her; but once he did, he was pleasantly surprised by everything that he found her to be, resulting in him writing an affectionate song about her. he thinks the world of her, and nowadays considers her to be one of his best friends—which speaks volumes, considering how picky he is with his social circle! they're quite different people, but that's part of why he likes having her as a friend so much, and he's endlessly proud as he watches her succeed in yuseong despite recent hardships.
