"i have very deep pockets." avery said very seriously, eyebrow raised, his lips twitching into a quite amused grin. he couldn't help it, feeling a bit silly, bit rather proud of himself as he looked at their haul, eyes peering at each item, not caring just how much it was saturated in fat, probably loaded with calories— he didn't mind. he was glad hyerin didn't as well, "i can store many things in them, including snacks and drinks, once i managed to fit in two cans of coke, it was kind of wild, but when i took them out and opened them, they made a mess because they exploded— so maybe it wasn't the best of ideas, i also had them in my pockets while i was dancing, so it makes sense they would have gotten agitated and shaken up."
he laughed, hiding his smile behind his hand, peering at the gummies, "yeah, i'll share them with you, especially if it'll help you sleep at night. but i'm warning you, i plan on eating everything we bought in one sitting. we have to hide the evidence after all, can't let them catch us in the act." avery laughed more openly now, the smile on his lips something small, something genuine, "i think you should get ramen, because i want to find myself some crisps and ice-cream to dip them in. wouldn't that be the best stress reliever? we could munch on them and watch a comfort show or something. do you have one of those?"
hyerin stared at him as she listened to his story about the coke cans. "yeah, that was definitely on you. there should be a punishment for that heinous act of crime." was she being a bit dramatic about a carbonated drink? yes, but that was part of her charm. she lifted the gummies tad bit higher. "so it's a done deal that we'll split these. i already know i'm not matching you bite for bite, though, so i'll be cheering from the sidelines once i've had my share." as she finished her sentence, she added the pack to their small hill of snacks. the bit about hiding evidence made her smile again. "we're going to have to take the trash straight to the outside bin at this rate."
at the question about a comfort show, she thought for half a second before answering. "kind of? i don't really keep up with specific shows. i don't really have the time to watch anything currently airing, but i rewatch cooking shows or random variety clips. oh, and nature docs if i want to fall asleep!" she let out a sigh at avery's suggestion, though she was not really surprised by it. she did pick him to join her for a reason. "anyway, has anyone ever told you that you are kind of a bad influence? i think most people would've discouraged me from getting it, but now i'm sold. was sold the moment you mentioned ice cream, actually. what flavor were you thinking of getting?"
chaeyeon shrieks, and its her pretending it's out of fear but really it's just excitement rattling out of her throat. she doesn't even look back, too busy standing on the pedals, hair whipping in the wind. to her, they're both stars in the evening sky. "ridiculous? um, excuse me, i am serving royal chic on two hot wheels, thank you very much," she shouts, wobbling on purpose just to hear herself gasp again. but to be fair the only royal thing about her is when her dads took her to france when she was 8. "oh my god, you're gaining on me, betrayal!" she cries, before pumping her legs harder.
her laugh cracks halfway through, and when she hears hyerin teasing she waves one hand in the air, dangerously unsteady, it's all part of some fabulous stunt routine, she swears. when the wheels hit the base of the gazebo and she skids to a sloppy stop, chaeyeon throws her arms up like she just won the tour de france, totally convinced of her own victory. "undefeated! iconic! queen of everything!" she declares, breathless and windy, having no clue that hyerin eased up just to let her bask in the glory. poor duckling.
hyerin rolls in a beat later, slowing to a stop as she takes in the arms-up pose, and bites back another laugh that still sneaks out anyway. "a queen losing is unheard of anyway," she echoes, trying to sound disgruntled and failing, because her mouth keeps curving up at the edges. while for most people, personal achievements and wins may e the highlight of their day, for hyerin, seeing other people happy was the highlight of hers, especially if she somehow caused it. the performance chaeyeon put on is exactly the kind of thing that makes hyerin's day feel brighter than it actually is. "not like i have a choice, but i'll allow it," she says at last, eyes warm, resting to let her breathing even after the ride. she would never mention how she eased up near the end.
"your public is already impressed," she teases, hand moving to tuck a flyaway strand that fell into her vision back into place. "got an acceptance speech them? but maybe keep at least one hand on the bike during it, please, my heart would like to keep beating at a normal rate." the smile doesn't leave her mouth for a second. then she tips her chin toward the path and the world beyond the gazebo. "come on, your well-earned victory deserves ice cream," she says before pausing. "wait, but we need to take a picture first! history like this needs to be documented."
...oh. she was the 'talking' sort.
no matter, haru had refined his craft over the art of communication and conversation over the years, even if he was keeping himself from demonstrating that to a minimum with the two other ladies he was trying his hardest to be curt and short with, yet maintaining the delicate balance of polite and civil. 'charming' would have been the word those ladies would have used to describe him, but there was no way for haru to know that, and he especially would not have caught on to how they most certainly found him 'charming' by the way their eyes would glisten whenever he spared them a small smile or feigned a soft chuckle.
for better or for worse, he figured that it would be too obvious if he kept his responses trimmed with others yet extensive with hyerin, so he initially kept his replies short with her as well, but not unkind. a simple "hi" back, a return of her quip with one of his own—"then it is a good thing i grabbed it before anyone else did". it was what she said after that tempted him into saying more than he should have.
"is it? you should let me know when you typically come here, so i can avoid those hours. i... do not like like how loud it is here." he almost said the word 'hate' instead, but he specifically steered clear of that; it was an intense word, even haru could recognise that, and most people tend to either take offence to the severity of it or assume that meant haru would rather be caught dead than associate himself with it ever again. which was never his intention—if he wanted to avoid loud places from then on, he would say it in explicit words, not imply it by expressing his distaste for it. he couldn't understand how people were able to spin his words and extract more meaning out of it than he originally planned.
he could tell she was about to give a response to what he had just said, however the young woman across from him grabbed his attention before hyerin could even get a word out and it took patience only haru could afford to not react externally. he did groan internally, however, because there it was again, they kept trying to pull his attention away from everyone else and monopolise him, god only knows why. he wished he could tell them to stop but the last time he did something similar, he received chides from his friends not to be so rude and he did not want to seem more like an alien than he already did by inquiring why that was perceived as rude. if anything, he found them rude for trying to keep him from speaking to anyone else, but he resigned to the fact that such a hidden subtext was lost to him.
when the question came of whatever drinks they would all be having, haru too responded with a noncommittal "i'm okay with anything", which then served as ammunition for the two ladies cornering him to inquire more about his alcohol preferences. as always, he assumed on a polite smile and spoke at a steady pace, carefully choosing his words in a language not yet second nature to him. "i... drank quite a bit whenever i would follow my friends out during my years in university. but i prefer other beverages."
in the end, haru heard their de facto representative order rounds of beer and soju for them, which was within haru's expectations. even before his arrival to korea, he heard of their inclination for somaek during his study of the language and the culture, and a few months in was enough to confirm their adoration for the drink. as for himself, haru was rather indifferent towards it, as he was many things; he'd prefer a tall glass of water over a mug of beer laced with soju.
she didn't mind that his greeting was short. she was actually relieved that it was, especially for the sake of her own social battery which seemed to be depleting even faster than usual. his response about claiming the seat earned a real curve of her mouth that she kept to herself. only for the simple fact that he entertained her small joke. usually, she would've jumped right into getting to know haru, but due to her current situation, she'd opted to mirror the people around her to get through the rest of the night.
the thought to make a joke about him sounding like he's planning on avoiding her passed though her head, but decides against it. she's not exactly sure how that'd land, so she didn't take the gamble. "i don't come here that often. especially on my own. i just end up here when i'm with them." she nods toward the cluster on her other side, the people she already knew would be the reason for her demise tonight. "i don't know if it's just loud here or if we're the loud ones. but we do normally come here around this time. if i figure out the quiet hours, i'll let you know."
while their questions tugged his attention away, she let herself drift off a little. her thumb rolled over the thin band on her index finger, then spun the ring a quarter turn, paused, spun it back. she was enjoying the quiet corner of her mind, but she was still catching pieces of the table talk as they floated by. a story about someone's haircut gone wrong. an argument about which latest song was the best. every so often she nodded at the right moment, let out a quiet hum that meant i'm here ,listening, even if she was using most of her focus on the ring.
her attention was drawn back at the mention of alcohol, and she almost verbalized the long sigh she did in her head at it. she wasn't really in the mood to drink anything with alcohol tonight, but she knew she'd be in for a long night if her friends heard that. though, her sigh was cut short by haru's answer. his choice to say "other beverages" was interesting to the younger of the pair, and it spawned a bunch of small questions in her mind. she slid herself into the conversation, asking the first small question that came to mind. "what do you like instead? i could use a few new recommendations to try since i typically end up with something sweet." in the corner of her eye, she could see her closest friend of the group looking at her, and hyerin can't determine if she should be concerned or not.
the answer was quickly revealed: she should've been concerned. her closest friend announced they were getting drinks, then sing-songed that they loved her so much they needed a love shot with her. 'just one, promise,' and they would excuse her from any drinking game after for the rest of the night. hyerin's hand stilled on her ring as she fought back the frown that threatened to appear. she knew them too well. one shot turned into a few, and then it's 'join the next round!' and then it's 'okay but you have to defend your title.' hyerin hesitated, eyes flicking between her friends' hopeful faces, as she weighed the cost of saying no against just going along with it. the pause was long enough for her friend to tack on a final bargaining chip: yogurt soju. the exact flavor that always coaxed her over the line. hyerin exhaled through her nose, the tiniest surrender, and nodded. "only one," she said, holding up a finger to set the boundary everyone would pretend to respect for now.
she could feel the agreement sit wrong in her chest, but she gave a smile bright enough to satisfy her friends enough for them to take their attention off her and back to their own conversation. her fingers found her ring again, twisting it slower this time as her thoughts tried to line up. "at least they asked," she told herself. she did say she was fine with whatever and would have anything they wanted, so this was them checking in, right? a smaller voice wondered if the asking meant they already knew she didn't really want to drink but still decided to convince her anyway, but she stopped that thought before it could get bigger or turn into something problematic. hyerin didn't like thinking poorly of people, even when the people were friends that leaned a little too hard on the part of her that prioritized others before herself. she tipped her head toward haru. "proof i always end up with something sweet. yogurt soju was tonight's kryptonite," she joked as the corner of her mouth lifted.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ{ @hdhyerin } — thread.
the moment they stepped into the threshold of the establishment, haru's senses were immediately assaulted by the vibrant cacophony of sizzling grills, boisterous laughter, and the thick haze of smoky air. in an instant, dread washed over him and the immense annoyance of knowing that he could have been anywhere else but there was palpable in his veins. loud crowds made for distractions aplenty and a slight debilitation for clear thought, which haru had an inkling he would need as much of as he possibly could muster that night.
he spared a glance over to where hyerin was, so that he could keep track of her location in spite of the two pillars affixed to either side of him that seemed hell bent on keeping him sandwiched between them. he hadn't a clue why these two young ladies had been consistently hounding on him and made it their mission to keep his focus away from everyone else, but he still tried to be as cordial as he could while thinking of a strategy he could employ.
haru could probably count within one hand the number of times he'd unknowingly gone out together with hyerin—two separate friend circles of his apparently had an overlap with hers, and once again haru was in disbelief at how there were people who genuinely believed more company made for more fun. yet in spite of the few instances that they'd been within relative proximity to one another, his perceptive gaze had caught on to small things, little details that most would either dismiss or overlook entirely, which gave him the strongest inkling of hyerin's... he wasn't even sure what to call it, at least not yet.
tonight would be the night he'd get his answers, he thought.
when their group was led to a long table against one of the walls, more chaos erupted in the already lively premises and the politics of deciding the seating arrangement began. while haru typically had little preference for where to sit and he was usually more than happy to take whichever seat remained, this was the one night he had a particular position in mind, and he had every intention of claiming it for his own.
in a gesture he rarely partook in, haru shoved his hands deep into the pockets of his pants and rolled in his shoulders, so that he could create as much distance as possible between him and the two unwanted columns on either side of him. before they could catch on to his escape attempt, he then swiftly sidestepped away and casually slid into the seat right beside hyerin's, wordlessly and without sparing her another glance.
he put his usual stoicism to good use and perfectly assumed a neutral expression, or at least as neutral as one could look while they looked through a menu. of course, the two ladies found their way both right across from him and on his other side, but he was on a mission and he had no intentions of letting them curb his attention away from it.
her brain was begging to retreat to someplace with fewer people so she could recharge. she thought about coming up with an excuse to turn in early, but she saw the way her friends' faces lit up at the idea of grabbing something to eat. and then she felt like she'd be the odd one out and ruin the mood if she voiced that she was tired and didn't want to go. it didn't help that they were already tugging at her sleeves in an attempt to drag her with them. so she told herself it would be fine, and stepped forward with the smile she uses when she wants to be cordial.
they moved in a loose cluster and she let their chatter carry her, adding a joke here and there when she could. she kept her jacket folded over her arm because it gave her hands something to do. someone nudged her toward the middle and she almost halted, but then let herself be steered because saying no would make it bigger than it needed to be. the table came into view, and she took her seat. only then did she notice haru settling into the seat beside hers, which kind of caught her off guard. they weren't necessarily close if you were to ask hyerin. they were just familiar from overlapping friend circles and a few shared laughs from the times they'd hung out. still, the smile she offered him felt a little more real than the one she wore for the friends that dragged her here.
"hello," she said as a simple pleasantry. she let the word hang there, and for a moment, she let the room turn into small things she could name instead of one loud blur. her eyes flickered from the decor on the walls to the flooring with a scuff right where her feet were. it was enough to get her to relax and push through another hour or two of socializing. she set her jacket across her lap and folded the edge between her fingers to once again keep her hands busy.
but she had to keep her mind busy before she spent every second thinking about her bed, so she turned back to haru. "it's been a busy night," she started, meeting his eyes for a beat before looking away again. "great seat choice, though. maybe even the best in the house." the joke was quick, something he could ignore if he wanted. her gaze skimmed past him to the far end of the table and back again, never lingering in one place for more than two seconds. "this place is somehow always loud when i'm here." it was a comment meant for herself, but she'd said it just loud enough to be picked up by the two people sitting on either side of her if they were paying attention.
she let out a long sigh as she leaned back in her seat, tucking a loose strand behind her ear as she took in the table. it had only been a few minutes, but it already felt like an hour. she opened her mouth to speak to haru again and then noticed the girl across from him looking like she wanted to talk to him, so she swallowed whatever she was about to say and angled her body a fraction away to make room for the conversation he was about to be pulled into. instead, she spoke to no one in particular, aiming it at the group. "i'm good with anything. i'll have whatever you all want."
she went back to looking around; the comment bought her a bit more silence. she knew she was a little detached from the gathering. it was fair for someone who should've been asleep by now. her fingers lined up the water glass with the coaster like it mattered. the table bustled around her, and she let the noise pass over her, giving anyone who met her eyes an easy, polite smile. that easy, polite smile stayed as she listened in on the conversations happening around her.

strawberry milkshake tour de park —
written for yoon hyerin (@hdhyerin) ♡
chaeyeon tears down the park path, bell chiming like she's announcing royalty, her long hair flying, laugh too loud for the Sunday quiet. she pedals standing up, legs burning, but she sells it as if she's auditioning for a commercial. "oh my god, look at me~ look at us! i totally needed this." she swerves dangerously close to the grass, then wobbles back onto the path, shrieking, "i meant to do that! totally part of the routine!" before ringing the bell again. a family of joggers stares, but she waves like a pageant queen, coasting until she nearly tips.
"this is sooo glam, i swear," she yells over her shoulder at hyerin, tossing her hair, "if anyone takes our picture right now, it's going on my gravestone." her voice is all mock-seriousness, but the grin won't leave her face. then she points ahead, pedaling furiously, "race you to the gazebo! loser buys ice cream!" and without waiting for agreement, she takes off, screaming every time her bike jolts over a crack in the pavement.
hyerin really tries her best not to laugh at first, but that lasts about three seconds. she really couldn't help herself once chaeyeon suddenly started doing the queen's wave to an audience of joggers. "you look ridiculous," hyerin calls out, but you can tell there's no bite or malice behind her words. hyerin pedals after her at a careful speed, letting the wind make her jacket flutter. hyerin does not look glamorous and she knows it, but she's having fun and maybe that's all that really matters. "eyes on the road, your majesty,” she adds the moment she sees chaeyeon nearly tip.
a loud gasp escapes her lips as chaeyeon has already bolted off without warning. "hey! you can't just take off without me," she protests, laughing, and starts pedaling faster in an attempt to catch up to her. she closes the distance by inches before the gap could get too wide. there is a small thrill in her chest that says win, but there is also a bigger one that says let chaeyeon win because she'd rather see a smile on chaeyeon's face. so, she eases off of the pedaling once she's close enough to make it seem like she tried. "i'm right on your tail~" she warns.
avery tilted his head to the side as he peered critically between the banana milk, and strawberry milk; he himself was holding a box if blueberry milk in his right hand, and in his left, a classic chocolate milk. he wasn't planning on picking between either of them, he could buy both, he deserved it after all after all the hard work he had put into training recently, surely, he knew that his carbs and calories could be taken differently, in a better manner, but that was why they sneaked out after practice, so they wouldn't feel like their necks were being breathed on upon, and they could have the freedom to pick whatever they had wanted.
today, avery had wanted to feast upon a magnitude of sweet and salty snacks. he turned towards hyerin, extremely serious as he spoke next, "you should buy both, and then get many snacks, that was what i was planning to do." and to prove a point, avery placed his drinks in the basket they were sharing, and as if the pockets of his hoodie were enchanted, he proceeded to take out snacks upon snacks and place them delicately along with the drinks. when he was done with his own little mountain of sugar and carbs, he looked at hyerin with a sparkle in his eye, lips twitching upwards into a quite a self satisfied smirk, "i plan eating into a food coma and then having the most satisfying nap ever."
hyerin couldn't help but be amused as avery kept pulling out snacks from his pockets. "where are those even coming from," she asked, lips twitching as she tried to look unimpressed. but the amount coming out of his pockets rendered her efforts useless as she let out a tiny laugh. "i feel like i should call you a traitor for managing to sneak that past me, but i'll let it go for now since you already gave a great plan." she mainly complied because she had no resolve when it came to sweets. she also didn't see a point in trying to restrict herself when she didn't know when she'd get another opportunity like this.
she slid both banana and strawberry milk into their basket and gave in to her cravings. honey butter chips. shrimp crackers. chocolate pies. everything landed in the basket one by one. she then help up a pack of gummies to show avery. "do you eat these? i think if we split these, my conscience would feel a bit better since we'll share the blame" she looked at their pile with a small smile, but it faded as another thought came to mind. "we should go before i talk myself into needing ramen and we're stuck here even longer."
open starter!
rows of brightly colored bottles stared back at hyerin, and she had already been standing in front of the convenience store's fridge for far too long. the cool air rushed out every time the door swung open nearby, but indecision kept her planted in place, studying the cartons in her hands. in one hand she held banana milk, in the other strawberry, and her brow was furrowed like the choice was genuinely impossible. "why is this always harder than it needs to be?" she muttered, turning toward the friend she had convinced to tag along. "be honest. which one should i pick?" she asked, lifting both drinks a little higher for emphasis.
she shifted her weight from one foot to the other, clearly not planning to make the decision herself. the corners of her mouth twitched as she added, "you know, this is exactly why i told you to come with me. if i had come alone, i would have been stuck here until they kicked me out." her gaze flicked between the two drinks again, then back to her companion, waiting for a final verdict. "so, strawberry or banana? or…" she drew the pause out as a grin finally appeared, hinting she'd already made up her mind. "do we just buy both?"
question of the day: so what do you do when you pick the worst time of the month to create a new muse and join a rp?
answer of the day: apparently, you spend two weeks drafting an intro and staring at the dash in shame before finally deciding to show up and weaponize humor as a distraction tactic. which may be exactly what i'm doing right now.
surprise! hi everyone, i'm star and i'm excited to be here (despite the radio silence). at last, i'm finally introducing yoon hyerin! she's basically sunshine in human form. kind-hearted, playful, and the type to remember your coffee order after meeting you once. on the flip side, she's easily distracted, sometimes a little too eager to please, and will 100% choose to go on a convenience store snack run over dealing with confrontation. more about her under the cut! just like this post or poke me in ims if you haven't already and i'll come running (probably still late but not as late). discord is available on request!
