( . . . ) โi wish you nothing but happiness.โ jian echoed his words from so long ago. but they were empty now, as was the heart he now lay at her feet. โi wishโฆ things were different. but thank you, sarang, for seeing me again.โ for the last time.
it is with a heavy heart that she enters the zhao estate; for several reasons. the main one being that it has been quite a while since sheโd last seen jian and the last time sheโs been, she found out about her best friendโs declining health.
it doesnโt take long for them to lead her to him. he doesnโt look good. sheโs so used to see him all self-satisfied, posing as strong. itโs like heโs not even trying to do that anymore. itโs unsettling.
she only nods when he apologises โ sheโs heard it before, many times. the words barely carry any meaning anymore, for if you say something often enough โฆ it doesnโt matter anymore. sarang lets jian hug her but her arms hang limp by her side. she still hasnโt spoken a word and she doesnโt what to say.
when he tells her about everything that had transpired between him and fire lord sado, sarangโs eyes grow wide. suddenly, everything about the way heโs acted just now make sense, the pieces falling right into place. โyou did what?โ she nearly laughs from sheer surprise. she wouldโve never expected jian to follow through with his seemingly empty promises.
her expression is unreadable, she supposes. it must be something between bewilderment, confusion and admiration. he continues to speak and she listens intently, brows furrowing at his final words. she wants to thank him properly, but her tongue betrays her. sheโs never been good at verbalising her emotions.
so, instead of trying to pull together senseless words that wouldnโt mean anything in the grand scheme of things, sarang pushes up onto her tiptoes and clumsily holds onto his face to connect their lips, for the first time in many, many years. itโs shaky, wobbly and not at all like in the romance novels she likes to read but it makes her heart beat faster all the same.
reluctantly, sarang withdraws, still holding both of his cheeks to look him right in the eye. โthank you. thatโs all i ever wanted.โ the outcome is unfortunate but itโs not in either of their control. her lips twist into a pained smile as she takes a step back. โitโs not your fault. you are not undeserving of your title because you have shown great responsibility and courage. please remember that, always.โ
