Anthem of my love || hayffie
@thetaleswetell
Haymitch dragged his feet towards the town square, partly out of reluctance and partly due to his state of drunkenness. Armed Peacekeepers marched next to his side to make sure he reached his destination. The guards were not stationed in Twelve, they had come with the train in the morning and had been sent out to get him into town as he hadn’t arrived on his own. Why would he? The Reaping had nothing to offer to him, like he had nothing to offer to those children who would be sentenced to death today.
The tributes for the 71st Hunger Games would be pucked from their families and he wasn’t looking forward to meet their empty eyes. He took a swig from his flask, chasing away the ghosts of late tributes, as they got closer and closer to the square.
The Anthem of Panem started blasting, exactly when he rounded the corner of the Justice Building. Oh how he hated that song. It stood for everything he despised about Panem and the world he lived in. He hated it even more so due to the fact that its title was forever marked in his skin. Everybody was born with these soulmate tattoos, showing the title of the song that plays when you meet your soulmate. Naturally, he had recieved such an unlucky piece, which was overused during the Games and the propaganda around these. The tattoo didn’t matter to him anyway. He had met his choice of soulmate, but she had died because he had survived his games.
One of the Peacekeepers shoved him towards the stage, urging him to get up with the rest of the important representatives. The mayor and his wife eyed him with pity, while Haymitch climbed the stairs, swaying left and right as he did so. He ungracefully dropped on the empty chair on stage while the last verse of the anthem blared out of the speakers. Haymitch forcefully didn’t watch the audience, as looking at the children would make his stomach turn. Instead, he looked around on stage, only now noticing a colourful blob that he hadn’t seen before.
Great. District Twelve had a new escort. Again.
Manicured fingers toy with the thick fuschia bangle on her right wrist. A nervous habit, she knows, but mother is not here to scold her for it.
It is her first year as Escort and though she had longed for a more glamorous district, she supposes every escort must begin somewhere. She’s sure District 12 must have some endearing qualities…
Her fumbling with her bracelet is clearly too much, because the thing slips from her hand and clatters loudly to the floor. As she picks it up and reclasps it, blue eyes cast over the song tattooed upon her wrist. The anthem of Panem…considering she hears the piece each and every day as it is blared around the Capitol, she doubts she will have much luck in finding another with the same words on their skin.
Soon enough, it is time for her to step out on stage. As she does so, the anthem plays and she finds herself glancing at those who accompany her. The mayor, two peacekeepers and…Haymitch Abernathy. A man she has never met, yet knows his reputation as a drunk well enough. Yet as their eyes meet, she feels something peculiar…as if their is an invisible connection between them.
Impossible…you’ve never met him…
She finds herself distracted, so much so that she almost misses her queue. But she does not, and steps up to the microphone with a bright smile overtaking her features.
“Ladies and gentlemen…Happy Hunger Games…”
Until the moment that his eyes met those of the new escort, Haymitch had only been bothered by the occation of the day. But that strange sensation he experienced when her blue eyes locked with his, made his stomach turn. He felt like this woman was somehow his new home, a person to trust with all he had and to be at peace with.
That feeling didn’t sit well with Haymitch. Deep anger flared up inside of him, causing him to frown. How could he feel any of these emotions towards a Capitol woman, he had never met before?! Their eye contact broke when the escort stepped forward to the microphone and welcomed the crowd.
Haymitch crossed his arms in front of his chest and glared at her while she did her job.

He scowled at that piece of information. He didn’t like it. Not for a bit.
“When’s that going to take place? Cos’ if you don’t mind, I’d try to be present too. That sounds like some crazy shit only that grey-haired madwoman can come up with,” he said and grumbled the last sentence under his breath so that it might not carry too far - just in case.
“It’s tomorrow after breakfast.” She knew he would be upset by that. “I don’t mind, but I’m not sure if Coin would like that.” She pursed her lips and thought, ‘Not that I care about Coin.’
“Oh that bitch made sure I couldn’t be there. I have a briefing to attend at that time,” Haymitch said and would have loved to kick something as anger was boiling inside of him.
“What do you plan to do, then?” She asked him, brown eyes focusing on him.
“I’ll need to play along. Coin will be at the briefing. You make sure they don’t mess with your daughter. If anything goes terribly wrong you go get me,” he said and sighed unhappily as he ran a hand through his hair.
“Hmm… I may be able to do something about that.” She then lowered her voice. “I’ll convience her to do the test after lunch, so she can be there to observe. Assuming you don’t have any plans after lunch, you can join me.”
“After lunch I’m free as far as I know now,” he said and nodded his head. “Would be good if you actually manage that. I don’t trust that woman with my girl.... uh.. well... your girl.”

“Sweetheart I want you below me in a very different situation but that won’t happen. You are not as clever as you think and not as pretty as you wish to be. So don’t come playing a game you can’t handle. Because in the end, I’m not the insecure one. I know my limits and what I can do,” he said with a small smirk on his lips.
“If you really must know, this is my fourth degree,” she said, still standing her ground. “Masters in psychology and mathematics, and a PhD in Architecture. So don’t tell me I’m not as ‘clever’ as I think I am. I don’t have to think it. I know it. I just think you’re threatened by a woman coming into your role.”
Haymitch laughted straight to her face. “You are not scaring me, sweetheart. You obviously can’t find your place in life. This job is my passion. It might kill me one day but so be it.”

And that was the moment he realized what he had missed. That’s when he got aware what she hadn’t done that morning when she came to get dressed - she hadn’t taken off that stupid, huge ring off her finger.
“Yeah is that so? Well you tell me if it’s healthy to swollow the anger of being dumped by the guy you thought would marry you,” he spat coldly.
She narrowed her eyes at him.
“If you were as wise as you portray yourself to be, you would stop right now.”
“Yeah? Don’t wanna hear the truth, hu? Fine, not my problem as long as you are done weeping over that idiot,” he answered and shrugged his shoulders.
“You’re a fucking asshole,” she hissed, stepping right up to him and glaring up at him. There was mere centimetres between them now. “You walk around this place like you own it. You are the most arrogant piece of shit I have ever laid eyes on.”
Haymitch squared up to her, not an ounce bothered by her attempt to stand up to him.
“Really?” He asked in a deep sarcastic tone. “Here I thought you’d look in the mirror at least once a day…. with all that crap on your face…”
“Do you even own a mirror?” She fired back, her fingers brushing the mess of stubble on his cheek. “You come in here every day looking like you just crawled out of a back alley. And then there’s the smell of alcohol on your breath.”
Even with the anger that was building, her touch felt like fire on his skin and he wasn’t sure if it was distructive or hot. “Sorry I’m not fitting into the hollywood type of a hot doctor. I prefer being clever instead of looking like a pampered, rich asshole,” he snapped back, barely hiding the growl in his face.

Sylvia&Haymitch
Haymitch chuckled at her antices and turned a bit on his side, pulling her closer when she was at his side. “You sound like our kid,” he smirked and captured her lips with his own.

“Fuck,” he muttered and pulled back just in time. “See that’s what I mean. You are distracting me!”
“I am not distracting you,” she snapped. “I’m assisting you and you’re choosing to comment on me.”
“You are more than a pain in the ass today,” Haymitch grumbled and went on to cut the tumor out.
She didn’t respond other than narrowing her eyes at him. Once the surgery was over and the patient was in recovery, they washed up and headed back to Haymitch’s office. Still, the scowl remained on Effie’s face.
Haymitch had more than enough. “What the fuck is wrong with you today, Trinket?? I’m so close from kicking your ass out for today,” Haymitch snapped at her.
She turned to him, taking a step closer and squaring up to him.
“Are you threatening me?”
“If you feel threatened, it’s not my problem, sweetheart. But you better spit it out or I really send you home, because you are in no state to work,” he answered back, not impressed by her stance.
“Fuck,” he muttered and pulled back just in time. “See that’s what I mean. You are distracting me!”

She looked up at Haymitch and gave a small smile. “Don’t ever doubt that I love you, Haymitch, please. I do. These past months have been really hard and I haven’t been the best wife I can be. I’m sorry.” Cashmere was legit afraid he would leave her because she wasn’t her normal self.
“Shhhhh, no more word about that. You are the best wife I could have and it’s all good. I love you too, princess,” he told her.
