If ya'll are ever in doubt about mindflayers not being the person they once were, remember there's a post credit scene with Withers where he absolutely ROASTS the Dead Three for trying to gather souls through their big plan. He essentially calls them stupid because the soul vanishes upon mindflayer transformation and, most likely, passes on to their respectful diety, something he basically tells the player in dialogue. It doesn't trap the soul. The mindflayer just mimics the host through memories they absorbed. You or the chosen character are no longer inhabiting that form at all and are basically piloting a husk.
