George Harrison and garden gnomes at Friar Park in 1970, photo © Barry Feinstein; Joan and Molly, undated, photo © Harrison Family (?), courtesy of Dhani’s Instagram; and Sir Frank Crisp, photo © unknown.
“The Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp is a piece of personal indulgence inspired by an eccentric lawyer from the 1800s whom I have come to know by becoming the proprietor of his Victorian folly, my home [Friar Park]. Sir Frank was also the authority on medieval gardens. Phil Spector said if I were to change the lyric I’d have a few cover versions of the song, but those words were written because that’s what it was.” - George Harrison, I Me Mine “When I first saw this place a year or so earlier, I still couldn’t afford it! It was Derek Taylor who talked me into buying the property after visiting it again with me, back when there were Catholic Nuns living here and there was talk of demolishing the run-down building because of the upkeep. Derek and I smoked some pot in the lower garden, and he told me to go ahead and get it. So I’ve spent the last 30 years fixing up the place, finding local people to help me do the gardening that used to be handled by a staff of over 40 in the 1870s, when it was built by a lawyer-baronet named Sir Frankie Crisp.” - George Harrison, Billboard (1999) Q: “Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll) was inspired by the eccentric gardener who used to own Friar Park, which was bought by George.” Olivia Harrison: “I love that song. George was a young man — aged 27 — when he bought it. The garden was derelict and overgrown. It would take a rare person to look at that and say, ‘This is great.’ But he just set about restoring it. It’s really a beautiful, beautiful place and it was just about doing it for the love of it.” - Something For The Weekend (June 2009) As for Joan and Molly (mentioned in the lyrics, and also thanked in the liner notes of George’s eponymous album, released in 1979, and Somewhere In England, released in 1981) — with thanks to Dhani for posting this on Instagram back in 2015, here are the faces to go along with the names in the song. About those garden gnomes: “Originally, when we took the photo I had these old Bavarian gnomes which I thought I would put there like kinda… John, Paul, George and Ringo[.] gnomes are very popular in Europe and these gnomes were made in about 1860” - George Harrison, Yahoo web chat (February 15, 2001)

Remembering Brian. Thoughts go to his family and friends.
“I love him dearly.” - Carl Wilson on his brother Brian, Los Angeles Times (1983) “What Brian’s given to me, given to us all, really… I could never repay. I love the guy, that’s really all I can say.” - Carl Wilson, Star Phoenix (April 23, 1980) “I’d like to see the group take another shot at making one more good record. That's the thing we keep trying to do but can never quite pull together all the elements. But I don't think we'll make another Beach Boys album until Brian's healthy enough to produce again. I know we could make a real strong commercial record with an outside producer. So that's possible, but, if you're talking about making a great record, 'Good Vibrations' class, you're talking about Brian with us. Anything else is bullshit. And yet, I don't mind if he doesn't make any more music. That's fine with me. I don't care if he makes hits or not. My interest in Brian is that I love him as a human being and as a brother, as I love all my family. I want him to have some joy and satisfaction in life, and he's not getting that. I'm not discouraging him by any means, but the main thing is that he have a nurturing, loving life. That's all that matters anyway.” - Carl Wilson, Musician Magazine (September 1983) “The sacrifice that Carl made to make sure that Brian had a chance to live a decent life. And Brian at that time when Carl had to be — he had to be almost the bad guy out of pure love, to save Brian… Carl’s efforts, certainly, with a lot of other people, but Carl had to be the strong guy. It’s why we can see Brian doing so great today.” - Jerry Schilling, Carl Wilson — Here And Now “[Carl's] voice healed me. When I was going through a lot of bad, bad things, his voice helped me out a lot.” - Brian Wilson, ibid
