“do you think that if i sold my crappy piece of junk to carmax that i’d get some good coin back?” luca asks mostly speaking his thoughts out loud– always a bad habit of his as he scrolled through the carmax homepage on his laptop. his eyes squinting for that he has been staring at it for hours. “okay, listen here, it’s been in the family since 2002 since it’s a shitty 2002 chevrolet silverado. but it’s in mint condition because i’m the one that takes care of it. i looked it up. i can either get $600 or i can get four grand for it depending on how someone markets it.” is it worth it? his mind had asked but he had decided to leave that part out. that shitty piece of metal is essentially a family heirloom. luca knows his dad would be pissed if he sold it but that’s exactly why he’s doing it. luca likes to do anything that will piss his dad at sighing he places his laptop down on the table in front of him before closing the screen furrowing his brows. he wanted to do anything than think about the party from the other night. “nope, no. i shouldn’t be looking at that, you want to go on a walk or something? i think i’ve been inside for too long. i think” he says a bit truthfully with a shrug before gathering his belongings and putting them in his bookbag.

it takes all morning to pick up the broken pieces of glass strewn all over the room and still as he walks around to check he manages to find them hidden in every crevice and corner. broom in hand, he makes sure to at least pile the glass where others won’t be able to accidentally step on it. after he’s content with the job he’s done he settles down in one of the library’s couches to rest. “watch out,” he says just in case the newcomer he can hear coming down the stairs hadn’t seen the pile of broken shards on the floor. “there’s broken glass in that corner.”

“Hey, hello!” she called out, waving a hand in an effort to attract their attention, though she didn’t have the energy nor desire to get up and chase after them. “I need your thoughts,” she explained, almost demanding their insight, “Your time is coming to an end,” she repeated the words on the wall. “What does it mean?” she asked, raising an eyebrow. “Yes, this is true. Our time is coming to an end as soon as it begins- isn’t that right?” she asked, rather philosophically, “-but it must be more direct than that,” she concluded, “Our time at the University? Our time as a society? Our time on Earth?” she took another drag of her cigarette and disposed of the ash against the brick wall, “What do you think? Have you been thinking about it?” she had only rarely stopped thinking about it since the morning after the party, though she wouldn’t admit it. “I love to know things but I love a puzzle even more,” she confessed, relishing in the challenge of decrypting the message, even if it was a threat, destructive and a little scary, at that.

born in gangnam, seoul, hera is the youngest of two children and the most accomplished. her parents constantly compared her achievements to her brother and encouraged her to live according to their wishes.

moved to san francisco at 11 and was the outcast of her school due to her competitive and ‘bossy’ behavior. the public comparisons changed: instead of people fawning over her and dismissing her brother, it was the other way around. to cope, she threw herself into studying in order to achieve something over him.

of course, this meant she had no interest in making friends, and lived her teenage years as incredibly lonely and unexperienced in anything that wasn’t what her parents wanted.
