June 20th 2015, I’m sitting in my vacant apartment with only a domino table, laptop, 2 studio monitors, and a mattress. It’s 9:30 at night and all the lights are off. Only my laptop is keeping my empty dining room lit and I’m staring at the wall wondering if I’m making a big mistake moving across the country to pursue my dream. “Why not stay in Houston and build your brand? Why New York? If you can’t make it here you’re definitely not gonna make it there.”⠀ All the thoughts of doubt just hit me all at once. I took one last sip of the Paul Masson and literally said out loud “F-ck it. If this is my dream might as well fail at trying to do it.”⠀ The @letgo app notification goes off and I’ve sold my last piece of furniture, my bed. No new lease, all the services to my apartment will turn off in 7 days. No going back now. ⠀ 3 years later, it’s been one of the best decisions of my life. I’d never thought I’d get this far. Honestly, I’m usually the first to set low expectations but today I’ve exceeded them and now I’m pushing the bar higher on my goals. I’ve produced an album for an artist on a major label, I’ve worked with some crazy talent, and I did it in a town that was supposed to eat me alive. ⠀ Cheers to taking risks.
