Thank you! I recently made a timelapse for that thorfinn portrait i posted earlier because another anon asked something similar, so here it is. yeah i use guidelines sometimes, for things like eye position and symmetry. I just pop up a line or two there while i'm already sketching the face.

There are also things like these face shadows here that help me better visualize the head in a 3d space. I like to use these a lot. 👇👇👇

Overall, here is how my first rough sketches tend to look like. Just scribbly gestual drawings to land the pose and the idea, no need for them to look presentable or good.
