jonathan groff before singing “left behind”, circa january 2007
yall dont understand the line “or he can bide his time, and let the system work for him. like me” and it shows.
i was watching a spring awakening boot and i’m CRYING at how you can see that all moritz has written on his chalkboard is his own name, really big
like moritz honey i love you but no wonder you’re in danger of failing

the soldier from TF2 says a lot of goofy stuff but honestly “if God had wanted you to live he would not have created me” is a pretty raw fucking line
It’s 2017 and I’m still fucking pissed Deaf West Spring Awakening didn’t get Tony or a tour or a longer run. They did not make an entire musical bilingual through choreography and cast incredibly hardworking and talented deaf actors/actresses to hit every single musical cue to be disrespected like this. This is why we can’t have nice things in theater.
SWEAR i’m not starting shit although this sounds like an inherently shit stirring question: what is it you like about jbw’s hanschen? i’ve watched several boots with him in but his hanschen has never really emotionally resonated with me so i’m really interested to know why you like him so much (convert me!)
DFGHDFHG its okay i love talking about this! beware this won’t be, like, a very structured post by any means but. that’s life! this is going to be mostly focusing on the vineyard scene because. his desdemona monologue is very iconic in its own right but i dont know if its within my power to make you feel emotionally connected to it
BEFORE i get to the vineyard scene, and yes im writing this out of order after writing the rest of the post because i just remembered it and it’s important: in the classroom scene just before all that’s known, take note of the way that hanschen is just as scared stiff as the other boys when herr sonnenstich begins talking to melchior. i don’t want to turn this into a dwsa vs obc post because i love dwsa but i really don’t like in dwsa how hanschen snickers along when herr sonnenstich antagonizes moritz about his mistake dfhgf it really doesn’t convey the way hanschen doesn’t trust authority and is just as afraid of being called out and punished for fuck ups as anyone else in their class (hem hem… but you’re fucked if you speak your mind)
i feel like the problem i have with a lot of other hanschens is that they play him like an adult man rather than a teenager, and jbw reallllllly captures that teenage arrogance without overdoing it imo. rather than hanschen delivering every line with an overly dramatic flair sort of as a wink wink nudge nudge to the audience that it is a ridiculous line, he delivers his whole “skim off the cream” speech with the complete sincerity of a teen boy who thinks he is saying just, the absolute most suave thing to ernst that he could say in the moment. it’s a less “theatrical” delivery for sure, but i think that’s what makes it more charming.
and i feel like i can’t make this post without mentioning gideon glick’s ernst, of course. while hanschen is usually played as an experienced character, typically with the sort of swagger of an adult man, ernst is usually played like an incredibly naive character who doesn’t understand hanschen’s advances, and as a result you usually end up with a really uncomfortable combination of a hanschen who comes across as though he’s more experienced, taking advantage of ernst’s naivete to get what he wants, and ernst doesn’t understand he’s doing it. i think gideon’s ernst walks a very fine line of being awkward, but not dumb in his responses to hanschen’s behavior. if you watch this clip, notice the way ernst repeats “just…skim off the cream?” that line is usually delivered as though ernst doesn’t realize hanschen’s meaning, and wants him to explain, whereas gideon’s delivery of it comes across more as ernst knowing that hanschen is being flirtatious, and asking for confirmation. he isn’t ignorant of hanschen’s advances, and as a result you don’t end up feeling like he’s being strung along by someone with more experience and awareness.
(another important thing to note in that video is the fact that ernst leans into the first kiss briefly, and then again meets hanschen in the middle for the second. i know this is a jbw hanschen defense post but i feel strongly about obc hernst and i rarely see that second kiss played as fully reciprocated on both sides from the get-go; it usually seems like hanschen pushing it a bit more vehemently until ernst eventually leans into it. also the way hanschen leans in slowly for the first kiss instead of him surprising ernst with it. i feel strongly about that)
BUT WAIT… THERES MORE……. in that same video, as well as right here in this bootleg, when ernst asks “and in the meantime?” hanschen cracks a smile at him and it just comes across as a very sweet moment of hanschen being completely smitten with ernst (i think all but 1 bootleg of jbw as hanschen is filmed from an angle where you cant see his face, which is probably why its a pretty underrated moment that i think shows the most like… tenderness from hanschen. getting just his deadpan delivery without the context of the rest of how he’s actually acting could definitely skew the perspective of his performance)
i know everyone rags on obc for playing that scene like a joke, but (as ive said before) i really don’t feel like it’s played as as big of a joke as other casts and productions have played it, but since it was 2006/2007 the audience responded to the gayness as an inherent source of humor so people who watch bootlegs now are kind of. tricked into thinking it was played less earnestly because of the uproarious laughter from straight audiences. the majority of the humor really just feels like it stems from the ridiculousness of what hanschen is saying, rather than the inherent humor of being gay.
of course this is a steven sater hate blog though and i won’t hesitate to complain about his absolutely dumpster garbage interpretation of hanschen, but i don’t necessarily think it has to come into play in my opinion of jbw’s choices in acting
also hes hot
tl;dr i love you jonathan b wright im free on thursday if you would like to hang out on thursday when i am free
hanschens on a scale of 1-10
Jonathan B Wright: 10/10. A tender boi and very well typecast: his chemistry with Gideon is great. Loved Ernst and wasn’t afraid to show it. obc, which obviously also counts for something. If only the audience shut up for 20 seconds and let him breathe. He has a pretty voice.
Andy Mientus (first national tour): 3/10. A shitty shitty boy. I’m gonna give him points for the kiss with Ben Moss, but he was creepy and predatory and it showed. Ben Moss and Ben Fank’s Ernsts have like one collective brain cell, so it very much came off like he was taking advantage of and making fun of them. His singing voice is meh.
Andy Mientus (dwsa): 3.5/10. Seems better until you realize he’s signing behind Josh’s Ernst’s back and he can’t hear how fucking creepy he is. His singing voice is even more meh and he also shushes Ernst’s voice which is like.. wyd. Josh Ernst is too innocent for him so like with the Bens, especially considering the hearing/deaf barrier, he is definitely taking advantage of him. I’m adding .5 for the blocking, which I prefer slightly more.
Matt Doyle: 7/10. He’s.. so tiny.. Cast typing is dead. He has a beautiful singing voice. He also has great comedic timing, to the point where I almost think his Hanschen is.. a little awkward or nervous? It’s cute and really different from what I’ve seen before. He and Blake make for a really unconventional pair, but they play it well.
Devin Stone: 5/10. He gives the skim of the cream speech like a bad superhero monologue. He can’t really sing either. The video I found of him is only audio, so I can’t say anything about his physical performance, but I don’t like him. Obviously the fact that the video is filmed on the world’s first toaster doesn’t help very much.
Joshua James: 2/10. Whiney, creepy, and annoying. Overacts every single line and makes fun of Ernst the whole time. The fact that he put this on his youtube channel and referred to himself in the third person made me -1 his score. He’s super flamboyant, which isn’t a bad thing I guess, but it’s definitely out of character.
Jamie Blackley: 10/10. He looks the part of a pompous teen, but is still tender and you can tell he loves Ernst. He overacts some lines but he’s so good I genuinely don’t care. His little smile at “well why not” is the CUTEST thing in the world and I melt every time I watch him perform it. He has a gorgeous singing voice and so much charisma. Basically what I’m saying is he’s underrated and iconic
that’s all but uhh here’s my ernst post
ernsts on a scale of 1-10
Gideon Glick: 10/10. beetles haircut. fucking adorable, naive and awkward but not stupid. obc, which has gotta count for something. Loves hanschen and is not being manipulated into it. Twink icon. The audience needs to shut the fuck up and let him sing. Weird character voice in the cast recording, but I’m gonna look past it because he’s still so fucking valid
Ben Moss: 7/10. A good boi, but so so utterly stupid. Just the dumbest Ernst to ever breathe. Smiles like :3. Lovely voice. Overacts at some moments and underacts in others, the way he delivers “Oh god” is weird to me. The kiss isn’t awkward like some others. Overall a wholesome and good Ernst.
Ben Fankhauser: 4/10. Stupid awkward AND heterosexual. I’ll give him some points for his lovely voice and the fact that I love him dearly as an actor. The whole vineyard scene made me uncomfortable because of how stupid and naive and manipulated he came off as.
Joshua Castille and Daniel Stewart: 9/10. Their Ernst was adorable and they worked very well to combine sign and spoken English, but the vineyard scene still made me a little uncomfortable because of how much of a pushover their Ernst is. They were mainly messed up by Andy’s Hanschen imo.
Harry McEntire: 10/10. Seemed like an awkward kid, and looked the part too. Not passive or whiney, which I appreciate. His starting the second kiss and the Hanschen he was paired with made the vineyard scene feel mutual which I appreciate so so so much. He was seemingly comfortable in the role, and even though his accent annoys me he’s so so good. The audience should really shut the fuck up because he was SO GOOD
anyways these are my hot takes and here’s my hanschen post

play:
moritz: the thing that affected me the most was what you wrote about girls. i can’t get it out of my mind. believe me, melchior, it’s sweeter to have to suffer a wrong than to commit one. To have to submit to such a sweet wrong without deserving it seems to me the essence of all earthly bliss melchior: ew gross bye
musical:
moritz: but how can you understand that, melchi!!? what the woman must feel!! melchior: giving yourself over to someone else? … defending yourself until, finally, you surrender and feel heaven break over you? … i just put myself in her place - and imagine…
casual reminder that some of the most redeeming parts of melchior’s musical character were just stolen from moritz in the original!
“So, maybe I’m a prophet. Not me, alone, all of us, the ones who’re dying now. Maybe the virus is the prophecy? Be still. Maybe the world has driven God from Heaven. Because I do believe that, over and over, I’ve seen the end of things. And having seen, I’m going blind, as prophets do. Right? It makes a certain sense to me.”
Angels in America: Perestroika, Act 2, Scene 2
you forgot about Blake Daniel as Ernst!!!
I’m gonna be honest before I saw this ask I never watched a single vid of him so I just watched his parts of the boot now and:
Blake Daniel: 8/10. A smiley boy! He’s not entirely stupid, which I really like. He’s not Ernst’s casting type which I don’t mind because type casting is dead. He definitely reciprocated Hanschen’s feelings, and his “I love you” felt like he was admitting it more to himself. It was fast, less like a reassurance and more like he just blurted it out. Since he’s not tiny, he isn’t really weak in his interpretation. He reads Ernst very differently from what I’m used to, but I like it. He’s pleasant. Also his touch me solo was cute. I’m taking off the two points because even though he was pretty unique (in a good way) in his interpretation, he didn’t stick out that much to me. He’s definitely good but there’s room to be more comfortable in his character. Also the audience needs to uhhhh shut the fuck up and let him exist and he gay in peace

In a 2007 interview, Steven Sater stated that Bobby Maler’s notorious khakis are actually “a symbol of the innate humor in homosexuality” as well as its “[figurative] slick texture, beige hue, and high likelihood of being found at Target retail locations.”

not gone, not gone.
one of the most important differences about the switch beating scene in the play and in the musical is that in this text it is specified that melchior abandons the switch to start pummeling wendla with his fists (enacting his worst nightmare) whereas in the musical he drops it to land 1 punch and then catches himself. the play describes a full on break where melchior entirely loses control. the thing that makes these scenes feel so different is that the play gives us the explicit knowledge that this is his worst fear.
when moritz talked about the nightmares that scared him the most, melchior confided that he’s dreamt of beating his dog and it was the most horrible thing he’d ever imagined. melchior is terrified of the desire in him to hurt someone. this seems like such an important part of his character and i can’t seem to find a place in the musical where melchior talks about this nightmare like…. i wholeheartedly hated melchior the first time i watched the musical and if i had understood even a little of that fear and that absolute terror in losing control to this darker desire it would have made a huge difference in how i viewed him.
of course it’s still a horrible thing that he’s done and he is responsible but to just dismiss what happens in this scene as “melchior is awful” is doing a huge disservice to the text.
