These two works of art are from Wayne White.
The top one is named:Â We Were Partyin At The Lake And This Girl Starts Freakin Out
The bottom is named: Artificial Cherry Flavor
They are similar in the way that text is both the focus for each piece. The top one looks frantic like it’s telling the story that the piece is named after. The bottom one shows organic flowers dying much as to say artificial things have replaced natural ones also relating to the name. They are different in the ways that the top one is more dynamic than the bottom one. The top image has a pastel color pallet and the bottom one has a complimentary color pallet with the red and green. The implied line of the top piece goes in every direction while the implied line in the bottom only goes from left to right.
This piece is by Ellen Gallagher an Art21 artist.

The content of this piece appears to be that there are eyes on you so you always have to wear a pleasant mask. The most prominent elements are the pattern in the eyeballs and repetition in the lipstick wearing masks. In this piece theres two groups. One on top and one on bottom. There’s movement in the eyes as if they are looking every where. The red color adds emphasis to the text and to the lips which I feel represents beauty the opposite of bad skin. Maybe strategic to juxtapose the two.

Untitled #22004Alkyd, acrylic, and enamel on gessoed canvas over wood panel52 Ă— 40 inches Photo by Douglas M. Parker Studio

What I enjoy about this piece is it’s content. It reminds me of a chemistry lab. The cactus looks like a resource and the ax is coming down to take it. The most prominent elements of art are variety. There is a lot going on in this piece. However, there’s emphasis on the lit up cactus. There’s also a nice balance. The bottle is the largest image while everything else is smaller. I feel that there’s implied line to the bottle through the ax, girl, gas can, and crane. There’s a lot of depth in this piece.

The lips are places evenly apart from one another. The use of negative space makes the piece look full much like the luscious lips. There was a lot of thought in the placement. The bright red color is the iconic red lipstick that women wear. The content of this piece includes emotion as the top the lips start off smiling and then slowly work its way down to a frown. The open mouth might even be a sigh. This piece is simple but tells a story. Very interesting.

This work is by Barry McGee.
I enjoy the quilted look to his work. There’s a lot of pattern with the use of geometric shapes. The colors are neon and vibrant and evenly spread throughout the piece. It makes it look lively. I feel that the artists process was methodically thought out. There’s a lot of movement in the piece not a single area is empty. It really catches your eye.
John Baldessari (b. 1931)Â
Goya Series: No One Knows Why
This work is by John Baldessari. The context of this image is powerful as if asks many questions and is given the answer “no one knows why.” The way it looks like part of a newspaper clipping makes it seem like very important news. The massive negative space makes the glasses the focal point of the piece. With one image and one sentence this piece truly is captivating. It jumped out to me because I wear glasses and seeing a pair of glasses broken like this makes me wonder the story behind them.

ABSTRACT CUT & PASTE
UNITY & VARIETY
View Rapt 4 by Arturo Herrera on artnet. Browse more artworks Arturo Herrera from Sikkema Jenkins Co.
Choose a work of Herrera's and discuss the use of balance, contrast/similarity, grouping; as well as content and context.
This work by Arturo Herrera is called Rapt 4.
This piece has two groupings- a small single piece in the bottom left leading to a large grouping in the top right. This helps form a balance of small to large. The contrast in the piece lies in the colors and the shapes. The white background emphasizes the dark gray and black colors. There appears to be a contrast of solid shapes to cut out shapes which also helps to create balance within the piece. The similarities lie in the direction of the images which leads to the right. If I had to guess the content it would be something like “run and hide”, I have come to this assumption because I see images that remind me of bunny shadow puppets leaving their post and a old man or gnome like creature chasing them in the top right. In the bottom left I see a tiny shadow puppet bunny coming out of hiding checking to see if the coast is clear.Â

PHOTO OF THE WEEK #6
PHOTO OF YOUR CHOICE. EXPLAIN ELEMENTS OF ART:
In the top photo I used the element of pattern in the rose petals to make the photo more interesting. There’s also an element of movement as your eyes move around the rose and then to the center of the rose. The repetition of petaIs made sure to focus on the rose and to make the background blurry to better use the positive and negative space. I made sure to use complimentary colors to make the rose really pop as it is the focal point of my photo. You can almost feel the soft smooth texture.
The bottom photo uses lines to bring your attention out and enough variety in the pieces of leaves, or stems, or other points to bring you back to the center. I think the rose-less stem also helps divide the space in between the points. There’s also use in pattern in the rose-less stem. I made sure to use cool hues to set a bleak tone for the photo. You can almost feel the fuzzy texture.

PHOTOS OF THE WEEK #5
YOUR CHOICE. EXPLAIN ELEMENTS OF ART:
The focal point of the top photograph is the fly. I used the art element line shown from the stem and the leaf to lead your eye to the fly. I also made sure to crop the piece to so that fly follows the rule of thirds. The yellow hues on the leafs also help move your eyes to the fly. The positive and negative space are almost equal which help form a sense of unity in the background. There’s also emphasis on the fly as it’s the only thing in focus and everything else is blurred. The compositional balance would be asymmetrical.
The focal point of the bottom photograph is the leaf. I chose the contrasting nature between organic and nonorganic material to highlight the leaf. I used texture to also highlight the difference between the rough concrete and the smooth, wet, slick leaf. I used the rule of thirds and placed the leaf in the corner.  Implied lines in the concrete also move your eye from the left to the right where the leaf lies and even the leaf continues the motion to the right. There’s also slight variety as there are some random bits of leaves and plants scattered in the photograph. The compositional balance is asymmetrical.Â

PHOTO OF THE WEEK 3
Photo of your choice:
I took a series of photos similar to the one above. I was experimenting with a pair of gimmick glasses as a filter for my lens. I specifically like this photograph because of the contrasting soft and and sharp textures that still form a sense of unity because of the rainbow colors. My favorite part is how much of an impact the filter makes a small boring object so large and interesting and emphasizes the glow in the negative space. In addition, the rainbow lines also emphasize the shining light. The repeating pattern that surrounds the main lightbulb also creates this wasp like nest, which I find whimsical and beautiful. This photo is not edited in any way.
