"I love writing," I say, lying.
here is a masterpost that i'll try to keep updated with all of my writing advice posts. if i missed one, please let me know!
How to create chemistry between characters so the reader feels the romance?
What makes a story feel lifeless?
Balancing character backstory: how much is too much, or too little?
How do you build up tension?
What are writing beats and how do I use them?
How do I keep character behavior consistent in longer fics?
How to finish a long project when you're not an outline person?
Using transitions instead of line breaks to move things forward when you don't want to write them
Some random little pieces of writing advice
What comes first: the story or the genre?
How do you plan what you write enough that you don't have to keep going back and changing things?
Fanfic writer habits I've had to unlearn when writing original novels for traditional publishing -- this post breached containment
How to get from point A to point B without skipping ahead but also without losing motivation?
What should characters do between plot points?
What does changing a book from adult to YA actually mean? What changes?
A longform analysis on thought strands, beat changes, and action beats/dialogue tags, aka: how to write so that it feels like a complete, acted scene.
"Please God, save me! The memories are killing me!"
Xdinary Heroes back again with another banger single!
These guys just don't miss fr!
I just think people write out of obligation too often.
"How do I motivate myself to write through the boring part of my story?"
"How do I make this boring scene not boring?"
Don't write it.
Don't write boring things just because you think the structure of the story demands it. I promise it doesn't need to be there.
If your characters need to have gone shopping for a later part of the story to make sense you can just have a sentence about how they went shopping and move on.
You are not obligated to write the boring parts. No matter what those parts are.
You are not obligated to make the parts of your story that you're not excited to write interesting somehow.
You can just write the fun and interesting parts and gloss over and summarize boring things.
Your audience will thank you and you will thank yourself.

Chapter 8
Danielle POV
After what happened on the rooftop, something unpleasant came to follow. The next day, it was obvious that Y/N was avoiding you. Not even trying to be subtle about it, just blatantly walking away whenever you were in his proximity.
During lunch time when you were just about to let him taste another one of your cooking, he stood up and walked past you, not even muttering a single sound before leaving you all by yourself. The change in demeanor was questionable, you didn't know what to do.
After a few seconds, you came to your senses and tried to follow him but he was already nowhere to be seen.
The whole day, you would try to find him, which was already difficult in itself, and whenever you did manage to find him, he'd just start to walk away from you without acknowledging your presence.
The last straw was when you waited for him to finish his shift at the café. You hoped to finally have a talk with him and ask about his behavior, but before you even had the chance, he told you off with words cold as ice.
"Just leave me alone."
His eyes refused to meet yours, swiftly turning his steps home. You couldn't do anything but watch as his figure slowly walked further away from you.
His words got you in a trance, torturing your mind with the echoes of his words.
It felt like your heart was stabbed by needles.
You did your best to hide these emotions from your friends, but truth be told. you were bummed out the entire day.
"Ah, why?!" You whined and covered your face with a pillow. You finally arrived home and there's nothing more you wanted but to rant.
"What's wrong with him?!," You continued to whine, lightly smacking your fist on your bed. You were very upset. Everything was smooth sailing then suddenly, it's back to square one, or even worse than square one.
"I thought I've finally made progress but he's avoiding me all of a sudden," You rubbed your eyes, preventing the tears that welled up in your eyes from falling.
"Did I do something wrong? Why would he hate me?" Negative thoughts start to flood your mind. It was the first time someone just blatantly chose to stay away from you so you couldn't help but tear up.
Sure, Y/N is free to feel whatever he wants, but it still hurts her to see him avoid you. You saw him as a friend after all.
Despite the pain, however, you refused to let this stop you from becoming friends with Y/N. You were not going to give up that easily, because if you did, then your efforts would be all for nothing.
You wish you could figure out why you're running the extra mile for him, but you were willing to do it for him anyway.
It just felt right. It felt right to hold on to him.
And you didn't want to let him go.
"I have to get to the bottom of this."
Y/N POV
Danielle is one hell of a trooper, that's for sure. Today felt like a huge, mixed game of Tag and Hide & Seek.
As you walked away from her, you couldn't help but feel bad for her. It seemed as if she was genuinely hurt when you told her off but at the same time, you believed it was the right thing to do.
The past few weeks felt obligatory to tolerate her just because you couldn't voice out what you really felt about the whole deal. It felt uncomfortable in a way you are unable to explain.
"I have to think about myself more," You mutter to yourself, you were only a few feet away from your apartment. You finally arrived and unlocked the door as the melancholic ambience of your lonely apartment greeted you at your doorstep.
You continued to wonder if you'd made the right decision. "I was basically forced into a deal, wasn't I?" You reason with yourself, preferring to use a logical approach.
"I don't owe her anything, why should I feel bad?"
"Why the hell is she so assertive about this, anyway? I'm not her responsibility."
"Why me, of all people she could've befriended?"
"I'm literally just a nobody, why invest your time with me?!"
"WHY WON'T YOU LEAVE ME ALONE?!"
The longer you thought about it, the more agitated you got and you began to hyperventilate. You refused to get attached to anyone, not even acquaintances. The last thing you wanted was history to repeat itself. You don't want to feel that pain anymore, so what better solution than to completely avoid everyone, right?
"I wish I hadn't met you, Y/N! You always make things worse!"
"This is why you deserve to be left alone!"
"You're a good-for-nothing waste of space!"
"STOP IT!!" You smack your head repeatedly, wanting to get the painful memory of the past out of your head. "STOP THINKING ABOUT IT!"
You did your best to contain yourself but the pain was too great, causing you to have an outburst.
"AAHHHH!!!" You cried out as the overwhelming emotions got the best of you.
You allowed yourself to weep on the floor, the high tension of earlier disappearing, replacing it with the cruel yet gentle feel of melancholy as you began to calm down.
After what seemed like hours, you went back to thinking.
Danielle Marsh, a girl who decided to show up in your life and offer friendship. She was assertive in most aspects yet also really compassionate towards people.
Ever since she met you, she was nothing but kind and caring, making you wonder why you're getting so mad about it?
Was it because you were unfamiliar?
Or was it too familiar?
As if it was a painful reminder of every positive thing you once had in life already disappeared and walked away from you. Since then, you became scared, you started to guard your heart and be cautious with every single person that surrounded you.
You feel your heart pounding out of your chest, mixed emotions start to well up. You didn't want to deny her but in order to protect yourself, you did. You had to.
The memories of your painful past still haunts you...
And there is nothing you could do but witness those pieces of you be scattered away.

Chapter 7
Y/N POV
Since that encounter with Danielle at the café, her approach towards you had taken on a rather... assertive tone. Whether 'aggressive' was the right word, you weren't entirely sure, but there was no denying the shift in her demeanor.
As days passed, Danielle's presence in your life seemed to grow more pronounced. She started to hang out with you more, her company becoming a familiar presence on the rooftop during breaks, and even popping into your classroom for a quick chat whenever she had the chance. You couldn't help but notice her waiting inside the café where you worked, patiently counting down the minutes until your shift ended.
And then, just when you thought you had figured her out, she surprised you once again. A week later, she unveiled yet another scheme, this time with the enticing aroma of homemade food wafting through the air. There she was, standing before you with a lunch box filled with her culinary creations.
"Seriously, Danielle, I'm not your responsibility," you sighed, feeling the weight of her persistent care pressing in on you as she hovered over you with a homemade meal.
"But I want to take care of you," she insisted, her determination unwavering as she spooned a mouthful of bimbap towards your face.
"Absolutely not!" You protested before zipping your mouth shut.
"Y/N, please?"
You shifted uncomfortably as Danielle persisted, spoon in hand, her unwavering determination palpable in the air. With each attempt to deflect her kindness, she seemed only to grow more resolute, matching your resistance with a determination of her own.
"Come on, Y/N," her voice softened, a hint of sadness creeping into her tone. "I've prepared this just for you, so you can have something to eat during lunchtime." Her gaze met yours with an earnest plea, her eyes pleading with you to understand.
Her concern for you was evident, and despite your attempts to remain firm, you couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt. It was flattering, in a way, to know that she cared so deeply for your well-being. The blush that crept up your cheeks betrayed your resolve, softening your stance against her persistent kindness.
"You're my friend," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper as she glanced down at the lunchbox cradled in her hands. "I don't want you to get sick. Please, just let me do this for you?"
You hesitated, torn between the walls you had built around your heart and the warmth of Danielle's concern. It was rare for someone to show such genuine care, and despite your reservations, you found yourself relenting to her earnest plea.
With a resigned sigh, you gave in. "Fine, sure, you can," you conceded, unable to resist the genuine joy that lit up her face at your acceptance.
"Yeeeeyyy!!!!" she exclaimed, her hands clapping with unrestrained joy as she celebrated her victory.
So, begrudgingly, you relented, allowing her to feed you. Her concern for your well-being tugged at your heartstrings, igniting a warmth within you that you couldn't quite extinguish.
As she fed you with gentle care, you couldn't help but marvel at the delicious flavors that danced on your taste buds. There was no denying that Danielle had a talent for cooking, and her enthusiasm only made the experience all the more enjoyable.
"It's actually really good," you admitted with a hint of surprise in your voice as you savored another bite.
A radiant smile spread across Danielle's face, her eyes shining with pride and happiness. "I'm so glad you liked it!" she exclaimed, her enthusiasm infectious.
"I promise to cook you something special every single day!"
As Danielle's enthusiasm bubbled over, you couldn't help but feel a twinge of warmth in your heart. Despite your reservations, her genuine excitement was infectious, and you found yourself smiling in spite of yourself.
Fortunately for you, Danielle was too happy to notice.
As you basked in the glow of her happiness, a small voice in the back of your mind whispered words of caution. Guarding your heart had become second nature to you, a defense mechanism honed over years of protecting yourself from potential hurt. And though Danielle's intentions seemed pure, you couldn't shake off the feeling of apprehension that lingered within you.
But the idea of giving her a chance and allowing her into your heart lingered in your mind.
'Should I or should I not let her in?'

Chapter 6
Y/N POV
Time seemed to crawl at a slow pace, every minute dragging its feet as you anxiously awaited the end of the school day. The minutes felt like hours as you counted the seconds until your final period ended.
With an intense stare fixed on the clock, you watched the hands move agonizingly slowly, inching closer to the coveted after-school hour. As the last bell finally rang, signaling the end of class, you wasted no time darting out of the room. Dodging through the bustling crowd of students, you were determined to be the first out, eager to escape the suffocating atmosphere of the school halls.
You longed for the solitude of your workplace, where you could immerse yourself in tasks far removed from the noise and distractions of life.
Speeding along the corridor, you made a beeline for the exit, your mind already on your part-time job awaiting him beyond the school gates. However, your hurried pace came to an abrupt halt as something unexpected caught your eye—an open classroom door, offering an enticing glimpse.
Inside, your gaze fell upon an unmistakably charming figure, none other than Danielle Marsh.
You were captivated by her presence, your gaze drawn to the intricate details that adorned her face like a masterpiece. Each delicate mole, the gentle curve of her lips, and the sparkle in her eyes rendered you momentarily speechless.
As you stood there, grappling with her presence's unfamiliar warmth, conflicting emotions surged within you. The vulnerability creeping in felt like a breach in the composed exterior you usually wore, a crack that threatened to unravel the carefully constructed walls around your heart. You were torn between the desire to embrace Danielle's presence and the instinct to retreat into the safety of your solitude.
You believed happiness was temporary, slipping through your fingers the moment you dared to grasp it too tightly. While you didn't necessarily associate Danielle with this sentiment, you couldn't shake the fear of losing something that could bring light into your life. The thought of risking that fragile sense of contentment was enough to keep your heart barricaded, unwilling to take the chance on something that might ultimately slip away.
You unconsciously stood there, staring at her as the thoughts lingered in your mind, when she suddenly turned around.
You froze in your spot as you saw her stare back at you with a small smile.
"Hi!" she mouthed, waving her hand at you. You would be lying to yourself if you didn't find her pretty. You hesitantly raised your hand to return the gesture, but as you noticed one of her friends approaching, you swiftly withdrew your arm. With a self-conscious scoff, you lightly tapped your forehead with your palm, acknowledging the awkwardness, before making a quick exit.
Danielle POV
Y/N's stare wasn't exactly subtle; you could feel his eyes lingering on you without even needing to turn in his direction. Yet, you held off, not quite ready to meet his gaze just yet.
Pretending to inspect the poster on the wall, you ran your fingers along its edges, the action more for show than anything else. It was endearing that he was checking on you instead of simply darting off as he had done the day before.
The gesture caused a flutter in your chest, a warmth that spread despite your best efforts to keep it at bay.
As you finally turned to acknowledge him, you caught him in the act of freezing, his expression similar to that of a deer caught in headlights. It was undeniably cute.
With a small wave, you hoped to break the tension, silently urging him to reciprocate. He did, albeit hesitantly, but it didn't last too long as he caught sight of Haerin approaching you with something to show. Without a word, he abruptly turned and left, making you pout your lips at the short interaction.
"Unnie, look at this froggie plushie I found by the..." She paused mid-sentence, seeing you in a daze, and waved her hand in front of your face.
"Earth to unnie, are you okay?" she switched between looking at you and looking at the ajar door of the classroom.
"Are you looking at something I can't?" she gasped. "Maybe a ghost?"
"What? No, there's no ghost, Haerin-ie" you assured her, petting her hair. "I just saw Y/N a moment ago, that's all."
"Ah, so that guy's got you all in a daze, huh?" Haerin mused, oblivious to the blush creeping up your cheeks at her comment.
"Come on, let's wrap this up so we can meet with the others," you chuckled, trying to steer Haerin away from the topic.
Thankfully, she went along with it, dropping the whole Y/N thing. But, damn, just thinking about him still made you blush.
You couldn't shake the memory of him dodging your question last night about why he was out so late. I mean, if he wasn't into wandering around, shouldn't he have been home earlier? Shaking your head, you figured you were probably overanalyzing things. You decided to shrug it off and go back to tidying up the club room.
Yesterday, Hyein had found a local coffee shop that swarmed with students and adults alike during this hour and insisted that all of you try going there after school, so that's exactly what you're going to do today.
"There it is!" the maknae pointed at a certain shop. Though it wasn't spacious, it gave off a relaxing atmosphere. "Let's go inside."
As you and the others followed Hyein's lead, you entered the coffee shop, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee enveloped you. You scanned the crowd, searching for an empty table, when suddenly your eyes landed on a familiar figure behind the counter.
It was Y/N, wearing an apron, and busy taking orders with a focused expression on his face. It seemed like Y/N had a part-time job here, a fact you hadn't known until now.
'So that's why he leaves so early,' you thought as the group made their way to an available table. Taking a seat, you immediately volunteered to handle the order at the counter. The reason behind your sudden eagerness was crystal clear, requiring no explanation.
"Oh, thanks! That's so sweet of you, Dani," Minji beamed, passing their contributions your way as you made your way to the line.
As you Y/N accommodated customer after customer, you found yourself getting closer to him and couldn't contain the smile tugging at your lips. After the person in front of you finally got their order, it was your turn.
"Hello, welcome to Moon Money Cafe, may I take your ord—" Y/N paused, mouth agape at the sight of you. He quickly closed his mouth and cleared his throat, doing his best to be professional.
You giggled before reciting your order to him. "Yes, I'll take five orders of your best seller, please?"
"S-sure," he cutely stammered. "F-five Cookie Cream Cheese. That'll be 4,058 won."
You handed him the money as he swiftly punched in the order on the register, his movements were practiced and efficient. Making your way back to your table, you found your friends engrossed in conversation, but your attention remained fixated on Y/N.
The determination in his eyes was palpable, evident in the way he effortlessly prepared your drinks despite being the sole worker during this busy hour. You couldn't help but admire his dedication and hard work, a silent acknowledgment of the effort he put in behind the counter.
"Yo, bro, who's got you smiling like that?" Hanni's mischievous tone distracted you, making you slightly jump from your seat.
"I don't know what you're talking about," you denied, but your lips told them otherwise. The members began teasing you, not even bothering to know the reason why you were smiling.
Soon enough, Y/N served your drinks, setting them down gently at the table. "Here's your order: five Cookie Cream Cheese Milkteas. If you need anything, I'll be right behind the counter."
He sounded so professional yet welcoming, a huge contrast to his chilly tone when he spoke at school. You kind of liked to hear more of it.
"Thank you so much." You thanked him as he gave you a simple nod and went back to accommodate the customers.
As you sipped on your drink, a sense of contentment washed over you, not just from the beverage but from the simple pleasure of sharing this moment with your friends and the unexpected connection you felt with Y/N.
"Y/N, you're... intriguing."
