you are made in your father's image. there is something about you, something that happens in your home, that is unspeakable, and this is because of your father. your parents wanted to kill you. your father is a liar but you won't find this out until later. you are made in your father's image. something happens when you're asleep that is terrifying and makes you want to kill yourself and it's because of your father. you are just like him. you belong to him. your parents are afraid of what happens if they can't control you. if you tell the truth about yourself something horrible will happen and no one will believe you. your father is dead. you are just like him.

To actually put some analysis on this:

Once you’ve hit “there’s something about your home life you have to keep secret,” you have already detonated the child abuse subtext bomb. And with regards to sexual abuse specifically: this thing that can’t be spoken happens at night when he’s asleep and he has no control of it. In TDT, the dreaming is explicitly linked to sexual violence when Kavinsky touches Ronan while he’s immobilized.

Even just on the level of what we get explicitly in the text, it's Not Good. Niall literally molds Ronan in his image in Greywaren! He is possessive and clearly does not see Ronan as an entity distinct from him. HIS MIDDLE NAME IS NIALL. Like. Niall is fucking Saturn devouring his son here. This is a classic abusive parent dynamic where the abusive parent sees their child as a possession or extension of themselves.

Abuse thrives in high-isolation, high control environments. Which the Lynch family absolutely is. Niall’s power as a storyteller and as a dreamer shapes the reality of the place. The difficulty of child abuse is that it is so difficult to know and to name. The abused child does not have any other frame of reference, and their reality is controlled by their parents. However bad they feel about something, their parents are the ones naming right and wrong. So it can't be that bad, right?

There is an obvious narrative foil here: Adam. Adam knows what's happening to him is abuse, but he nonetheless spends so much time and energy attempting to hide, obscure, downplay and lie about the truth about his father. It takes most of TRB for his abuse actually come into view explicitly. Ronan’s dreaming operates the same way. There is something about him which other characters can sense but not speak and which the reader can get the edges of but it can’t really be known until he decides to reveal it. Against his father’s wishes.

This is why the Niall Lynch redemption arc makes me want to fucking explode things with my mind. Because the subtext is absolutely bulging out of the walls here. The house is fucking haunted. I wish so dearly that TD3 was actually about Ronan getting to know that, but the text never really allows him to know it. And so it's just this unsettling thread that can never be resolved because it once again can't be named. We have to recoup the father figure at all costs apparently! god. it really truly makes me want to climb the walls. and that's why I wrote patrimony.
