I think the biggest thing is deciding which version of Arthur you want to write (high honor, low honor, or somewhere in the middle). Even then, there are so many different interpretations of his character that there really isn't a right or wrong way to write him.

When studying him, the main thing for me is that I don't consider player agency to be reliable evidence of Arthur's psychology.

An example would be:

If I spend three hours walking around Valentine having Arthur greet everyone he passes, have I learned that Arthur is extroverted?

Not necessarily. I've learned that the game allows the player to greet everyone.

So instead, I lean much more heavily on his journal, ambient dialogue, and cutscenes where the player isn't making the decisions.

His journal especially is a gold mine. It shows how observant, thoughtful, and surprisingly self-aware he is in a way that dialogue sometimes doesn't.

The morality choices are important too because they show the range of paths Arthur can take, but they're still ultimately dependent on the player. You have to decide what you think Arthur would do and build your interpretation from there.

For example, my Arthur sits somewhere around mid honor, leaning towards high honor, but he's not quite there yet. I also have a little more freedom because my fic is set a year before the game, and we never actually get to see what Arthur was like during that period.

A quiet afternoon takes an unexpected turn when curiosity leads you into the rain.

Chapter Twelve.

With Cornwall nowhere to be found, Arthur is left with little more than the river, the rain, and his own thoughts.

Chapter Eleven.

A luncheon at the St. Charles Hotel offers George another opportunity to earn your father's approval.

But, holy shit, unbecoming is the best fic I've read in so long, and I feel like I needed to do smth else other than leave kudos or whatever. It's so well written it didn't even feel like +45k words. The dialogues don't feel weird (and I know that's so difficult to accomplish, I used to write fics myself), and overall I just ate it up like a Michelin star-meal.

I'm really a history nerd, and the 1850-1900 are definitely my favourite period. When I read fics of that time period, I feel like the dialogues (especially if some of the characters are from the high society of the time) and descriptions of city places in general, aren't very accurate. And it pains me so much, especially when describing clothing. But I think you did great. It doesn't go into too much detail, I would say, but not to the point it feels lacking. Too many descriptions would feel overbearing, and too little wouldn't set the atmosphere well. The ones that are there just feel on point, is what I'm trying to say. The dress descriptions are LOVELY, too, which is usually my main complaint about fics (but 1890's fashion is so beautiful it needs to be well written).

Anyway, idk if this is too much, I feel so weird writing this. I'm sorry if it comes off as awkward, but I really think I should start supporting long fic writers more, because I know how difficult it is. I ate it up, loved it, it was great and I'm soooo looking forward to the next chapter!!! xx

I aim for everything to be as accurate as possible whilst also being entertaining...and readable.

One of my irks is when i'm reading a historical fanfic and it's 'They have balls every night and she wore a cerulean silk gown adorned with seventeen billion pearls' or the reader is basically a modern woman in a corset.

The dresses deserve to be written right and beautifully!! I totally agree, 1880-1900's are my favorite decades for historical fashion. When I write the dress descriptions I actually use references. Most of them come from The Met Museum archive.

I know that upper-class is a little bit of a niche topic for the RDR2 community (or at least i think so) and Unbecoming really requires a historical view to it, we can't read it through the modern lens as it's not set in modern times.

I want the world to feel lived in and the characters to behave according to their world and time, not ours.
