Today’s brief: | Chair | Image 1: Chair, 900mm tall. Did anyone notice the lack of posts last week? Image 2: I'm thinking of changing the brief: 'A new design when I can'. I know I won't be able to produce a daily design again until at least June. We have committed to some big things in our personal lives and these designs will have to take a back seat. Image 3: I rendered the chair in a brushed aluminium appearance so I think it looks more industrial/outdoorsy than I was planning. I pictured the chair as a formal dining chair made from timber but I didn't have the time to apply those material properties.

Image 1: Brass and walnut with recessed LEDs Brass ⌀400mm Image 2: The LEDs can be switched in 4 combinations by cycling through the switch. I like that the ambience of the light can easily be changed. The nest post will explain this more. Image 3: When time is an issue for some reason I default to drawing lights. I think this is because they are easier and fast to model then say a chair. But where I come unstuck is when I render it with lighting effects. The time I save in modelling a more then lose to set up and render with lights. A 2 minute render blows out to 8 or so when lights are on and when I want to do different combinations I spend a long time watching reflection and refraction calculations taking place.

Image 1: Plywood kids stool L320mm x W320mm x H300mm Image 2: The 'C' shaped legs nest really efficiently so there's good yield from a sheet. The two leg pieces are the same profile. Modelled in 19mm plywood. Furniture grade Birch ply is my favourite. Image 3: The legs drop into slots on the underside of the stool. The slots are slightly inboard of where the legs would naturally sit so that there is a tension fit with the top - no fasteners required. Sitting on the stool would increase this tension.

Today’s brief: | Desk Lamp | Image 1: 8mm aluminium RHS bent and fabricated with 12 recessed LEDs. 350mm tall. Image 2: The ends of the tubes are slotted and welded on from the underside. Wiring is also on the underside of the lamp. Image 3: Rather than emitting a glow like a regular light bulb, the light from this lamp is concentrated towards the surface it's sitting on. But brightness and control over individual LEDs could be done.

Today’s brief: | Coffee Table | Image 1: Coffee table. Walnut and steel. H400mm, Timber ⌀350mm Image 2: Simple frame construction with turned timber 'plates' on top. Halfway through modelling this, it occurred to me that they looked like plates spinning on top of sticks. This wasn't the original idea or inspiration, but I ended up saving this design in a folder called "Coffee Table - Spinning Plates' Image 3: Turned walnut tables on top or a powdercoated frame. Instead of timber, they could be ceramic.
