Hana was born in Kahaluu Hawaii. Her parents had a rocky marriage, divorcing when she was a child. Her mother moved with Hana to Sausalito, California. Hana found herself out of her home more than in it. Sports or after school clubs clogged her schedule more so after the divorce. Small town life was not for her at all, and Sausalito was just too small and too boring for her. Hana felt smothered during her last few years of high school. She threw herself into her studies and went to college.
College saw her freedom, getting accepted into UCLA to be a professional translator. Day one she roomed with someone who would become a friend: Jenny. Jenny had a group of friends that quickly took to Hana and she to them.
Hana moved to Malibu after graduating. She landed a job as a personal assistant to help with the college debt. Hana found love with a partner who didn’t care much for the relationship, but didn’t want to be alone. Hana found herself stuck in a dead end relationship. Her friends were all celebrating a bachelorette party in Italy. During that trip, Eva and Hana met. Hana fell hard that day, their fling quickly started. By the time she had to go home she was ready to break up with her partner.
Long distance relationships were new for both of them. Eva visited Malibu and Hana visited Venice twice. She quit her job during the second trip to Italy. They both thought the sky was the limit. However Hana couldn’t uproot her whole life. She didn’t want to leave her mother behind. A year later they broke up. Moving to a new country for both women was not in the cards. They parted ways on good terms. Shortly after the break up Hana found out her estranged father had remarried and she had a whole family she didn’t know about. Her mother confirmed she told her father to stay out of Hana’s life. Hana hasn’t reconnected with either parent, but has since managed to reunite with her dad and meet her extended family.
Hana found herself in some legal trouble. She ‘broke her contract’ to the person she was an assistant for and they sued. They tried to smear her name and anyone associated with her. Eventually Hana won the case but as a result she deleted her social media. Hana also got a new phone number, everything associated with her name was set to private. In the process she lost track of Eva and when the dust settled, two years had passed. Hana had lost her college friend group. She thought about contacting Eva but it had been so long, she was hesitant to do so.
Turning a new leaf Hana picked a job that focused on her career path. She was hired at a captioning company in Cali. Hana lived in her own apartment with the money she won and her new job. She rebuilt her life quietly. During her venture back online she found Eva again. They reconnected immediately. Eva and Hana moved in with each other in March.

“The spice level that you think is the best and preferably as soon as possible. You can’t just plant all these ideas and then expect me to wait. That is for sure not fair.” Vivian shrugged, teasing just slightly, she always loved some back and forth. She shook her head, “That’s insane, that must take a ton of patience too. But I’m sure the two of them being cute helps them a ton.” She nodded, “Oh for sure I’m already thinking of all the spicy things I could make.”
Hana couldn't help but laugh. She was almost certain Eva had said something similar to her before. "I'll add cauliflower to my shopping list and buy them as soon as possible." She was quite excited it was chef's choice on the spice. "They really are too cute for words. Oh I get to make a dip too!" Hana's eyes lit up. "Do you have a preference or should I surprise you?"
“That’s awesome. I only know Spanish and that’s only because of my family. I never really got the chance to learn anything else yet. French would be useful considering how many countries also use French. Is it harder to learn languages as an adult?” He asked genuinely curious. He became bilingual at an early age so he wasn’t sure how it was as you got older. “Is there any language you would want to learn that isn’t as universally used?”
Jay fell quiet for a moment when he heard Hana explain her job situation in the past. He had to admit the whole situation sounded like a nightmare. “ If you’re going to be stuck somewhere you could do worse than Italy, but that still sucks that you went through that sort of thing. The vacation seems like it’s worth it. “ He added with a smile.
“ Wait it’s really that long? I had no idea. Did you see anything?”
Hana shrugged, "I've been told it's hard. I acknowledge there are challenges, but I kinda click with languages? At least the few I've learned. I dunno I mean languages are really cool. I think I'm gonna keep my options open and not get too attached for now. See what sticks." Hana was aware that her experience wasn't the experience of everyone else. She had as well learned languages that shared some things in common. "Yeah Rome to Reggio Emilia is roughly four hours. It was worth it though." It was worth it for Eva and Hana. The two hadn't brought it up to Eva's parents. It seemed to be water under the bridge. "I stayed close to the harbor. It was kinda difficult as I had all my things with me. I did eat though. I had a good dinner and I charged it to the company card because I still had it with me." Hana smirked. She wasn't always petty but it was well earned at that point.
“Damn, look at you go. I thought I knew how to make some dishes but obviously I’m behind.” Vivian always liked to be independent and one of the ways to do that for herself was being able to cook. Even if she didn’t think she was the best at it she felt like it was something she’d need to do. “It seems like I’d want to be trying a lot more than the wings at this rate. I can’t say I’ve ever had those cauliflower bites before.” But she never turned down a chance to try something new. She chuckled a little at her story, “Seems like you’d need a distraction for them. Give them something that they think is amazing so they won’t be thinking about what you’re doing. But I’m sure cats are much more clever than that.”
Hana felt a rush of joy at the other woman's words. "I will make you the cauliflower bites! Just let me know when and how spicy you want them." As far as her cats went, there was no distracting them when it came to food they wanted. "I swear I feed them whenever I start cooking and they have top quality food. But no, their human's chicken is better." She giggled at her two chaotic furbabies. Tacos and cauliflower bites sounded like a decent meal to Hana. "Look at me go planning tomorrows dinner..."
“Oh that would be the dream now wouldn’t it? I feel like there is so much to see and so little time. Three is amazing! I’ve only been to France and I loved it.” Jackie sighed contently, she loved being able to gush about traveling with someone. “That is so admirable! To be able to overcome them, people love to turn away from them.” Her eyes grew in surprise at the story. “That is amazing though! Being able to spend time with people you care about makes it a worlds better. Rome though! How amazing was that? What was your favorite part?”
"Rome was fun. What little I saw from it. I booked this little hotel last minute after the ship docked. I ghosted right off that boat, got a ride into the city and found a decent hotel." She could laugh now, but at the time it was the scariest thing she'd ever done. "It was near Vatican City so I took a little walk around there. I had four hours to kill so I became a tourist. Did some shopping. Ate at this little bistro that had like a French mix to it. And then I sat in a car for a very long time praying Eva's parents didn't despise me. They didn't thankfully." She didn't actually ask for a ride to Reggio or Venice. It just happened. "So I called Eva and was like surprise I'm stuck in Rome. And next thing I know she's asking for an address because she and her parents are coming to get me. I thought I was nervous drunk-quitting my job. Little did I know that ride was also terrifying." Another story she could laugh at now but was not funny at the time.
“But still! The fact that you kept trying and learning is just so admirable!” Jackie always admired people who loved to explore and had that determination to keep trying new things. It reminded her of herself, maybe not as much now but at least before. Her eyes grew in excitement and intrigue, “Wow I’ve only been to Europe once on a trip in college for a competition but that is amazing. And that cruise…sounds like it could have been even better. I am so sorry that you didn’t have the best company.” That couldn’t have been easy. “Oh god I can’t imagine, I feel like they must constantly be ready to want to test you abilities.”
"Europe is so much fun. I want to visit all of it." Hana gushed. "I'm on like three out of the... I think it's over forty countries." Hana was no expert but she knew it was a lot of countries that made up all of Europe. "Eh it's not so bad, I like a challenge. Which is why I keep doing things. For the challenge." Bragging wasn't something she did often, but if she felt the moment called for it, she would. "Yeah the cruise was a disaster but I did get to see Eva again. We were long distance at the time. So I basically said surprise I'm stuck in Rome. It's quite a story."

Jay was a little surprised when her heard her response to his profession. He thought his job was cool, but he never expected anyone else to share the sentiment. It brought a soft smile to his face as he acknowledged how kind she was being. “ Thank you. I think it’s really cool. It’s a lot of sitting at a desk, but I love it” Jay replied with a nod of thanks. “ I’m sorry if I’m overstepping, but can I ask what you did?” He asked, knowing he would drop the issue if she wanted him to. “ Now see, that is a cool job. What languages do you speak?” He asked before nodding his head at her advice. “ Yeah, honestly it takes so much time to work on a project and to scrap thing’s that’s a lot of time and resources. I think that’s why I get so disheartened when they want to change stuff so severe”
"Oh stop you're so sweet. Officially I can speak Italian and Spanish. I am thinking about learning another language though. It's been sitting there in the back of my mind for a while now. I might go for all three Romance languages and learn French." She shrugged. "The world is my oyster."
Hana exhaled at the memory of her old job. "I was a personal assistant to some jerk. It was lame, the boss was trash. I quit on a trip to Italy he took me on. That was fun. Scary, but fun." Hana took a very long sip of her drink. "I did get a short vacation with Eva though. So small victories." Hana had subconsciously taken Eva's hand while she spoke about that chaotic time. Eva in response leaned on Hana's arm.
"We tr-traveled... Traveled to Roma... just to leave after we got there." Eva giggled. "A four hour journey."
“You won me over at the word spicy. And you cook it too? Even better.” Food always intrigued her. She didn’t feel like she was the best cook but she still enjoyed learning about other dishes. “Well I would be crazy to turn that chance down wouldn’t I? Wings are probably one of my favorite dishes. Especially if they are made right.” She chuckled and shook her head, “Really? If anything spicy food gives me more energy.” But to say she was interested would be an understatement, “We should make this happen soon. Any other cool dishes that you make?”
Hana really enjoyed cooking. It's one of the things she and Eva bonded over immediately and while she was new to Italian cooking all those years ago she'd learned a thing or two since then. "People bash on cauliflower bites but lemme tell you I could eat them for days. I can make some good soups! I make an amazing chicken noodle soup for starters. I've got a bunch of recipes floating in my head. I learned to do a lot with a little." If she hadn't decided on dinner already she'd make the fish tacos instead. Eva wouldn't like the spice but she knew how to work around that too. "Not sure how I'm gonna get away with making those tacos with two nosy cats though." Hana shook her head. "I love them but have some food that they want and it's over."
