"Downtown: Finale: Knockout"

Ax'L managed to cross the finish line first by a surprising few seconds before the Upper Class gang leader. Before he could complete a sigh of relief, the Gang leader side-swipped him shouting through the wind and the slowly picking up rain:

"YOU DIDN'T WIN! IT'S NOT OVER TILL I SAY IT'S OVER, ASSHOLE!"

The two proceed to wind through wet city streets, alerting the police to give chase as turns get sloppier, paint gets traded harder and harder, until eventually Ax'L manages to cause the boss to lose control and wrap his car around a pole, which sends his own car rolling across the street with the police following suit.

All cars totalled, Ax'L crawls out from under his car to see the Boss fall out of his own mass of tangled, warped metal, brandishing a handgun. Ax'L gets in too quick, dodging the two rounds that got squeezed off and the two trade blows in the pouring rain in the center of downtown. Eventually Ax'L manages a knockout blow and leaves him out cold in the middle of the street as law enforcement quickly circles in. To his surprise, a member of the guys gang, a Horse named Diji, quickly pulls over and shouts him over to provide a quick getaway.

Another DOOZY! This is the first time I've blocked out a drawing in 3D in a LONG time, and I think it helped out alot! The hardest part of this piece was the crashed Bentley Brooklands (Which there are NO detailed underside shots of) and all the ads I came up with. Alot of which are in universe references, alot are callouts to friends (Check out Lewi's Noodle house and Claret Age!). I tried to keep everything late 90s with the style of ads and the cars as well.

After his car was totaled in the race against the Downtown gang boss (see Knockout, it's in the back, center right), he was out of any way to continue his crusade to shut down Túl's illegal street racing racket. However, the horse who got him out of downtown, Diji, had an idea; "I've got family out in the sticks, who, if I remember correctly, should have an old War-era Ute out there that hasn't seen pavement in over a decade." Ax'L's hesitant, he's never been much of a mechanic, Anne had helped him keep his old car running while he worked to clear the streets of downtown. "Ran when parked!" he uttered with a wink.

The car was a wreck; sun-bleached, flat tires, chewed through brake lines, bone dry radiator, the cabin was a nest to the local rodent population, but with some muscle she turned over, and with some fresh fenrite and a bit of "go-juice" she managed to bark off at Diji, damn near burning his eyebrows off. By the end of the day, Ax'L had found a new set of wheels to combat the Inner City gang. She's unconventional, she's old, but she's a runner, and still has some life left in her.

Was excited to finally draw Diji in one of these pieces and keep the story going! This was also a piece very roughly blocked out in blender, after a bunch of toying around with the camera and focal length to really push the perspective. Also I wanted to do go for more yellows and optimistic colors, since that's the color I feel best associates with his character. Diji is a former member of the Downtown gang that helped Ax'L escape after the events of "Knockout" as a thank you for essentially freeing him from a very shitty boss. He's absolutely going to make more appearances as the story goes along, and I can't wait to show more of it!

This piece went through at least 3 major revisions but I'm glad to have seen it through! I wanted to expand on the world of the piece "Chasing the Apocalypse" with a full rewind to the very start of the story, with the main character "Ax'L Turbski" lining up for his first race. Giving him a last second rundown of the course is former Fenrite miner Darryl Bedrock (much to his sister Anne's [who can be found running across the street in the back] displeasure of getting involved with this stuff).

I wanted the setting to be about 10 or so years after the end of this huge 20 year galactic conflict where everyone's expanding back out across the stars, and the story takes place on the most popular of the former frontier planets, Vakmerő. technology wise they have advanced past the "Space 80's" and are into the late 90s, roughly 1997 ish. With everyone expanding to new planets they need fuel-efficient ways of getting around wherever they settle down, and as such tit's given birth to an automotive renaissance, and this coupled with the rapid expansion of the size of Vakmerő's port city, Túl, has led to a growing illegal street racing racket being run by the city's growing gangs, who fight over who the city "belongs to".

There's more to this that I'd love to expand on with future illustrations but in the here and now please enjoy!
