"That we would not"
That's more or less exactly the response he expected. He takes a mental snapshot of his disapproval so he can stare at it and laugh more later. But it does make him curious
"But, say I were to become a frog or something of that manner, what would you do? Keep me in a jar? Throw me in the creek? Or maybe you'd take the opportunity to become Composer and squish me!"
Amusement finds its way back onto Neku's face when Joshua goes off into a string of questions about what he'd do if he turned into a frog of all things, though considering the connection it has to the talk of fairytale methods earlier, it's not all that weird.
Neku's reply comes without hesitation, "Nope, I reject that opportunity. You're going in the creek."
Like Neku's cured a curse cast on him, Joshua starts talking again immediately
"Oh thank goodness! As much as I adore listening to you speak Neku, I was truly beginning to miss the sound of my own voice"
He'd actually kind of liked it. But evidently Neku hadn't, so oh well
"You really should watch what you say Neku, next time might require more..." he chuckles "fairytale methods to fix me"
This time it's Neku who just goes quiet as he folds his arms and just stares at him, though it's not really the same playful silent treatment, it's more of an unspoken; Really? There's a fondness in Neku's exasperation, though, he doesn't quite get annoyed with Joshua the same way he did before.
"Fairytale methods?" He doesn't even want to ask, but his immediate assumption is exactly what Joshua is making it sound like, "Uh-huh. I gotta watch my step pretty carefully, then. Wouldn't want that to happen."
Joshua doesn't say anything, just chuckles when Neku tells him to stop talking and scoffs when he brings up him not getting a win in. He didn't, but how dare Neku bring it up
He frowns for a moment when Neku says he isn't in the mood, but still doesn't say anything. Even when directly asked a question
He just...stares at him, blinking a little too innocently for comfort
After his question is left hanging, Neku inevitably starts to feel very awkward, but then that awkwardness starts to drift into just general discomfort as Joshua does nothing but stare at him, blinking weirdly.
"Euugh... Why are you looking at me like that? Can't you ever be normal?" It takes Neku a few seconds, but then it starts to click. He's doing this because he told him to stop talking, isn't he? He bets he is. That bastard. "Hey—" Neku sighs heavily, a bit flustered yet again at getting teased like this, "I didn't mean shut up forever, idiot."
"Well you're the one who messed up my retirement plans, dear" He smirks at the pouting, he's so easy to rile up
"Are you saying you'd like to slam that passion into me again? How forward of you. Don't think you'll snatch a victory quite so easily this time"
He'd been practicing for three years. But he won't admit to that because, quite frankly, he thinks it sounds rather pathetic. Much more entertaining to claim that he's just naturally talented. Neku can't prove anything anyways
"But if you're in the mood to loose, I'd be happy to have a go with you"
"Oh, man..." He lifts his hands and waves them in refusal, "I really need you to stop talking now." It's like he couldn't say anything without walking into another innuendo, but he shakes it off quick to get back to what the real topic is.
"Y'know, I seem to remember you couldn't get a win in. Don't tell me you've spent all this time practicing." Would he have even had time for that? Neku can't really guess considering he doesn't know what was actually going on with Joshua at the time. "But I'm just not in the mood to play right now, and I'm not sure I trust the pins I've got left..." He's sure he has a lot of catching up to do in the realm of Tin Pin.
Do they still have tournaments? Does anyone even play Tin Pin anymore?
Neku gives Joshua a curious look then, "So... Is Tin Pin still a thing? It didn't phase out, did it?"

"Hmm... that does sound familiar." Joshua raises his hand to cup his chin, thinking back to that horrible day. They'd been fighting through the horde of mysterious monsters. Joshua hadn't a clue what they were at first. He'd been unable to access the Higher Plane to gain their knowledge while he was tuned down.
He'd never seen a Heartless before. It wasn't until he saw for himself what they were doing to the citizens in the RG that he figured it out.
Joshua studies Neku for a moment, then glances away with a hum. Should he throw Neku a bone, offer something that may link more memories together? Or should he leave him be and let more come back on its own? If he does, would that leave Neku too reliant on him?
Maybe something small...
"Horrible things, weren't they? The way they twitched like that. Hungry, too. They were attacking everything in sight."
Did Joshua really not remember anything? Or was he playing him? Neku couldn't really tell, and honestly, he didn't really have the time to consider it much before Joshua threw what little he could supposedly remember out there.
The twitching... that hunger, too. Yeah, it's easy to recall. It leaves Neku with an uncomfortable feeling deep in his chest. There was something else there, sitting on the edge of his mind and clawing at it. Something horrible, desperate to be remembered.
Suddenly, Neku has to remind himself to breathe.
"Y-Yeah... Everything... Even..." Even what? Tension builds in his shoulders and he crosses his arms instead, holding them tight against his chest, "Hey Josh... What were we doing before we left, anyway? Do you remember?"
If Joshua was an honest creature, he'd say he was thinking about how much he enjoyed solving Shibuya's little mysteries with Neku or the things he'd noticed Neku did in his sleep. Perhaps, if he was braver, he'd admit to thinking about the profound impact that his choice in the Room Of Reckoning left on him
But he doesn't say any of that, because for all his bravado nothing scares him more then being honest. Especially with Neku. Instead, he grins like the Cheshire Cat he pretends to be
"Oh definitely that time you slammed your fiery passion into the other guy. Always good to see you expressing your true self, dear"
Neku had been so lost in his own thoughts that Joshua actually catches him off guard with that one, but then he just huffs loudly as a tint of pink starts to color his cheeks. Here he'd been trying to get serious, and Joshua just... is Joshua, as always. He shoves his hands into his jacket pockets and presses his back a little harder against the wall like it'll help his embarrassment, and his expression drops into what he'd insist is just a frown, but really it's more of a pout.
"Jeez, you never quit." Neku stands there in stubborn silence for a second before he just scoffs softly, smirking just a little, "Yeah... Tin Pin was good, especially when we'd play. You're such a fussy loser."

"What?" Neku wants to say he can't believe what he's hearing, but this... it's just how Beat is, it didn't make it okay, but Neku understood that much. It didn't stop the way his face shifted to betray the upset in his heart, though.
"No, it shouldn't have. It didn't need to be you." Neku crosses his arms as though it would help his case somehow, "I'm not trying to say that it should've been me either, it's just... I wouldn't have wanted to see that happen to you. It would've... it would've really sucked, you know?"

"Everything's a blur for you? I can barely put it together." And he's certainly tried, over and over again, and once in a while little pieces find their way back to him, but they never paint a full picture. It's so frustrating not knowing what's happening, or why they're here, and Joshua is just vague and weird.
"I dunno... I remember these creatures running around, they were pitch black and they didn't look anything like Noise." He rubs his shoulder anxiously as the mental image of them comes back to him, their piercing eyes staring back, seemingly devoid of everything. At least with noise, you could sense some kind of aggression, these things were just...
Neku looks more directly at Joshua, keeping his hand still in that one place against his shoulder now. He remembers feeling overwhelmed, he couldn't keep up with the swarm, "It was getting pretty bad, I think. They kept gathering up, we couldn't really get their numbers down, and I think I got hurt, or something..."

There's a slow sigh that leaves his nose when Joshua finishes speaking, an exhale that expressed perfectly the many complicated feelings he still had about that. Neku uses the texture of the wall he leans against to center himself, it's rough and unpleasant against his fingertips, but it's still grounding, in a way.
One thing he knows is regardless of the time that's passed, he still hasn't forgiven him... but it's like any anger he could still feel - that he had felt - dies out before it can ever catch a spark. He's okay with that, yet it leaves a weird void in its place where no emotion will fit.
Maybe Joshua is just trying to tease him, but it doesn't land, he's just stuck contemplating.
