Ngl, this blog is all over the damn place. If it's even a "blog," then again, that is why I called it "my shit post."

I do think I'll keep this page because I like being able to talk about what ever the fuck I feel like talking about when I want to. Scream into the void low effort personal journal type shit.

It would be fun, however, to have another blog or a couple more that have much more of a dedicated focus. I'm still thinking, though. Maybe a gaming blog, a fashion blog, or a music/ art blog. A blog about nature and weird bugs I like, IDK.

Point is, I started the halfdeafrivithead blog just because I wanted to fuck around on tumblr.

Problem with having a dedicated blog however, is that I had ADHD and am a walking scatter brain who cycles through interests constantly, so it's kinda hard to pin down and box myself into only a few categories.

Last night, I managed to log into my old dead Instagram account I haven't used in like 6 years because I was up all night because I forgot to take my sleeping meds. The point is, I found the account of one of my old "goth" classmates in college and was wondering why none of my other classmates weren't following her anymore.

Turns out she's like this insanely extreme pro lifer, alberta separatist, antivaxxer type... no wonder why no one follows her on her account anymore.

Recently, on my current instagram account, I also had to unfollow and block a "goth" person whom I once thought was my friend. Turns out, she thinks being LGBTQ+ is a sexual sin and says that she struggles with "SSA" (SAME SEX ATTRACTION). Her whole comments section was filled with other "ex-gay" people trying to "repent for their sins".

Now if your wondering why I put "goth" in quotations, it's not just because these people were conservative, and holding far-right veiws. It's because there people never participated in the goth scene, online or in person to begin with.

The first girl I mentioned dresses and calls herself goth. But, she doesn't follow any goth bands, doesn't follow anyone in her local scene, doesn't frequent any of the local clubs or pubs, it's fucking wild. This girl is so wrapped up in her families conservative views and the loud opinions of Andrew Tate type people online. Like I swear to fuck, if this chick just went and touched grass once in a while, maybe she'd start to question some of the indoctrination. Maybe if she participated in her local scene and met and made friends with people, she'd start to question the fucked up things she and her family have been perpetuating.

I need some industrial band to make this their next album cover if it hasn't been done already.

Leading on from my last large waffle about disability portrayal in the Hunger Games. I want to vent about disability portrayals in the Sci-fi, Fantasy, and Dystopian fiction in particular.

I would argue that one good thing about these genres, is the overwhelming wealth and diversity of disability inclusion. Probably more then most other genres out there.

The unfortunate side effect however, usually ends up being that these disabilities are used as a plot device or worst yet are "fixed" or "enhanced" by some sort of fantastical or futuristic medical advancement or magic power.

I don’t know where this rumor started, but: Katniss was never canonically deaf after the first book and never wore a hearing aid.

Peeta was disabled: he was an amputee and this was especially important in the events of Catching Fire.

Other characters, like Chaff and the Avoxes, were also disabled, and they were also not featured in any of the movies (surprise, surprise). These are also legitimate concerns.

But in your criticism, do not criticize something that doesn’t exist.

Katniss suffers what is implied to be a perforated or ruptured eardrum: after the explosion, she bleeds from her left ear, has tinnitus in her right ear that eventually goes away, and vertigo and disorientation from the lack of hearing.

This is not to say that the damage isn’t serious: throughout the book she constantly tests her hearing, to no avail.

At the end of the book, after she’s won, this happens:

This is a plot point later in Catching Fire.

Reconstructed. Not a hearing aid. It’s heavily implied that Katniss had a tympanoplasty, an actual surgery in real life that is commonly used to treat victims of explosions who have suffered hearing loss (like these people who were at the Boston Marathon Bombings). A hearing aid is never mentioned.

Given that Suzanne Collins made sure to make Peeta’s prosthesis prominent and realistically portrayed, I doubt she would have forgotten to mention a hearing aid, even a permanent and implanted hearing aid, if Katniss had one. Instead, she brings up multiple times that Katniss had reconstructive surgery.

Criticize the exclusion of Peeta’s disability as much as you want. Hell, an argument can be made that Katniss should have been kept deaf in one ear rather than having it “fixed” with the Capitol’s magitech. And the movies certainly should have made it clear that she was deaf in one ear for the entirety of her first Games, and only underwent surgery after she was declared a Victor.

But unless I’m missing something (and I very well could be), Katniss did not have a hearing aid in the books, and so while the movies are lacking in their treatment of disabled characters, the exclusion of Katniss’ hearing aid is not one of them, because she never had one in the first place.

I know the top comment I've reposted is very old but since the new book "Sunrise over the reaping" came out, I've been starting to revisit the Hunger Games series as a whole. I was about 13 when I read the first book, and I saw myself a lot in katniss's character, especially when it came to the depiction of single sided hearing loss. At the time, I had not been officially diagnosed, and that wouldn't happen till almost another ten years later as an adult when I got my first appointment with an audiologist.

But reading that part in the story, where her ear bleeds, she had horrible ringing in her ear and loses her balance... that was almost exactly the same expirence I had as a small child when I went deaf in my right ear.

I think it's especially important to include disabilities in writing and media, but personally, I don't always want the characters to be "fixed" or "cured" or even have adaptive technology like hearing aids, or a prosthetic. Disabled people exist on a wide and varied spectrum. Yes, some have serious complications and use all the ability aids they can get, medication, and procedures to fix or correct a medical issue, and that is 100% valid.

But, not everyone has access to getting a proper diagnosis, treatment, care, or adaptive technology. Some people were just born disabled and are used to their bodies being that way and do little to change it. Or some become disabled later on in life and learn how to cope with it.

I know an exorbitant amount of people in my daily life who have missing hands, feet, fingers, ears, arms, eyes, etc. Or other conditions like hearing loss, CRPS, or auto immune diseases. And a majority of the time, you wouldn't even realize it.

All this to say: NORMALIZE MORE DISABILITY REPRESENTATION IN FICTION

Man, one of the most absurd core memories I have of my childhood has to be the time my older brother and his girlfriend came over to look after me when I had the stomach bug.

We stayed home together (on a school day), he cooked me canned chiken noodle soup, and his girlfriend brought over a carton of apple juice from her place for me to drink.

Then we watched this movie on the couch together while I proceeded to profusely puke my guts out into an ice-cream pail.
