What makes a story a story?
I have been mulling something over for a while and have decided to share. As part of my job, I read a lot of fiction that's still in development. After a while, you start to see the same errors, misunderstandings and shortcuts crop up repeatedly with different creators and it gets me thinking what is the most elegant way possible I could explain the issues to someone wanting to improve? The one that comes up the most often and is the hardest to explain is: "Why don't people care about my characters and/or story". It's always a thorny problem and I think I have a workable answer that applies in most cases: A story is a series of revelations regarding compounding, unintentional consequences to character decisions. The further you stray from this, the less people care. It translates to: 1) characters have to make decisions otherwise there is no drama 2) Those decisions have to matter otherwise there are no stakes 2) The consequences have to interact with one another. A affects or causes B affects or causes C etc. otherwise there is no progression 3) There must be some unintended consequences otherwise there is no conflict 4) The consequences have to be revealed (even at least implied) otherwise there is no conclusion This works at the micro scale in terms of dialogue: The specific word/tone/movement a character uses affects how another character reacts in an unexpected or interesting way which in turn causes another reaction and these layer onto one another until a decision is reached and a consequence implied thereby completing the scene. It also works at the macro scale in terms of plot: The decisions characters made in a scene prompts/affects the characters and context of the scene that follows (even if we don't know it at first) and by the end those layered interactions have been revealed to us and we see the unexpected or interesting result.
In my anecdotal experience, most times people don't care about a work of fiction is not because of a technical issue with the execution but because the writer has subtly misunderstood what makes a story a story. Their main character doesn't make any decisions, the decisions don't seem to matter, it feels disjointed because consequences aren't layering, there's no conflict because there are no misunderstandings etc. There countless technical aspects which affect the quality of a piece of fiction but most times when someone asks me to help them make people care about their story they first need to realise they have misunderstood what actually makes a story at a fundamental level and they need to recognise that before things can improve. I dunno if this helps anyone. I hope it does. Sorry if it doesn't. If anyone wants to use this to assess their own work let me know what you discover, I'm genuinely curious.
ok so this is another long shot but a few years ago there was a twitter post (in japanese i think?) that had measurememts for how to make this book stand thing out of cardboard that you could use to double up books and use up more space on shelves
back then i made a bunch of these but by now i lost the pic and dont know how to find the original post anymore
if it comes down to it i can just take one apart and get the measurements from there but i would be very grateful if anyone happens to have the original post or something similar??
don't mind how long it's been since i made this post, anyway i realized that i don't even need to take one apart to get the measurements when i can literally just unfold it and refold it /FACEPALM
so anyway here is the diagram for anyone else who is interested!!
this requires pretty big carboard pieces, if you have a really big box or something you can make it from one piece, but if you don't, you can also just make each of the pieces individually and then tape them together
and then in the end you put it together like this!!
and then when you make a bunch you can put them all next to each other and stack your books like crazy

Hi there! And thanks for waiting on a reply to this.
Unfortunately, my first attempt at querying failed. I sent out 100+ queries and received several full-manuscript requests, but in the end, all of the interested agents passed on representing my book.
I'm sad about that, of course. My heart is still sore even a few years after the last rejection email came in. But I've learned a lot about the querying process just by going through it, and the next time I try, I'll be much better equipped to handle it. (And I do very much intend to try again! I'm still determined to land an agent and publish my books.)
Querying is long, difficult, and can be quite stressful. My biggest advice: if possible, don't go it alone! Having a strong support network of loving friends and fellow writers will help you more than I have words to describe.
❤️❤️❤️ I imagine it’s quite the process. I’ve actually been talked into trying it out myself so I’m working to flesh out my novella another 10-15k to make it novel length. I’m so impatient, but I want to try. In the meantime, I’ve found a good community in Scares that Care and my discord and friends. The support definitely helps. If you ever want to branch out with friends and support systems just let me know. I feel like you’d fit in. It’s all indie horror and fantasy. @tlbodine is our lovely moderator. I still think about your stories! I would love to see them come to life in the world.

It is I, Michelle Heller, a person you've probably never heard of until now. I am an extremely obscure indie horror writer with two official titles and a whole mess of goofy short stories I share for free.
I am a humble cryptid that enjoys comedy horror, cosmic horror, and body horror (often all at once). I don't restrict myself to those categories more than I tend to get the most ideas for them, though. Expect me to eventually wander off into another subgenre.
I may occasionally post my bad doodles of various monsters/characters, but art really is not my strength, so they'll be pretty sparse.

One of the first things I did when I moved away from home and into my college town was locate the city library and see what I needed to do to get a card. Then I went to the library every week. It helped me feel connected to the community and feel a sense of place, which helped me get over my homesickness.
Seriously, check out your local library. They have SO MUCH STUFF besides books (especially these days).
don't forget to install library extension in your browser of choice! when you look at books on amazon etc it will tell you whether they're available at your library in physical or digital form. i set my default to libby instead of overdrive and enabled showing when books were available on hoopla since my library has it.

One of the first victims of Epstein to speak out was a Latina transgender girl, Ava Cordero. She was sixteen when she was lured to Epstein’s apartment under the guise of helping her career in modeling. Ava Cordero was mocked, belittled, and denied by the media, her transness somehow overshadowing her status as a victim of assault. The media (Dareh Gregorian and Lucy Carne of the New York Post) specifically somehow spun it as Epstein being a victim of the case and treated her claims as an attempt to defame Epstein. Mind you, the journalists, Epstein’s lawyer (Gerald Lefcourt), and Epstein himself, were able to get away with this specifically because she was a transgender woman.
One of the first people to publicly accuse Jeffrey Epstein of abuse was a trans woman, Ava Cordero – she was mocked for it.
The problem with saying "Frankenstein is about [X]" is the same as saying "Dracula is about [X]"- these books are not fables, they are novels. They do certainly draw from their author's lives and the cultural zeitgeist around them, so you could say Frankenstein is about:
Mary Shelley's birth killing her mother
Mary Shelley's own baby dying
Mary Shelley never really getting her father's love and respect
Mary Shelley's close friendship with Lord Byron, who had been exiled from society
Mary Shelley being exiled from society herself following her elopement
Mary Shelley "breaking up" a marriage where the wife later (but before the book's publication) killed herself

Erasmus Darwin's experiments
A holiday in a place with history about alchemists
A ghost story contest
All of those things were surely on Mary Shelley's mind when she wrote Frankenstein, consciously or unconsciously. The book is about all of these things, and also it's about an entirely fictional scenario.
One thing that comes up again and again in critical theory regarding Gothic literature is its “excessive meaning.”
