Writing Prompt Task: Cora & Jennifer

Jennifer was content enough to smirk back with no shame.
“Whaaaaat? You not able to be the subjugated one? I’d have never guessed.”
It was playful, teasing, and Jennifer couldn’t recall a time when she’d been able to indulge in such a way before the Hales… Well, there was one time but she adamantly refused to linger on those thoughts for more than a few moments at a time.
“Oh he would… Considering the way he acts when we’re alone it surprises me how prudish he can be.” she chuckled.
When she’d first met Derek he’d seemed cocky, self-assured and assertive. He was all of those things but also it seemed somewhat dorkish and shy on other ways; all those little quirks had been delights to find out; the man hiding under all the rest.
“These are expert lashes, don’t underestimate their power.”
Despite her reply being as joking as Cora’s own statement there was a deeper truth to her words. Beauty was a power all its own and she’d gained enough strength to appear more beautiful than she’d even been before. Beautiful enough to be noticed by as many people as she wished. Beautiful enough to be seen by Derek.
It was a rush she hadn’t expected to feel and suspected it could be rather addictive in its own way but, Jennifer had more important things to obsess over and nothing would get in the way of them. Nothing. Fortunately, her and Cora’s little shopping trip happened to be a useful little excursion for them both so Jennifer let Cora see the fabled boots and could almost watch the gears in her mind turning.
“Hmmmmmm, I’m sure that’s all it was.”
Jennifer chuckled slightly, “Though I never knew ‘shy’ could be a synonym for grumpy.” Another chuckle followed and she brushed her hair back. She hadn’t taken offence at the time (though Derek’s annoyance would’ve been enough for both of them) and she certainly didn’t now; it anything it just showed how far the pair of them had come.
A shame it would be all for nought.
“That’s not the kind of ‘out’ I mean and you damn well know it.” she laughed, trailing her fingers through a scarf that was on display, too tacky for her tastes. “I mean the out where you’re more likely to run into another person than a hungry alligator.”
Jennifer’s smirk told her well enough that her choice had been well made. Despite her less than social behaviour Cora wasn’t too difficult to read and, thankfully, she had taste.
“Of course they will, I wouldn’t have suggested them otherwise.”
She watched the other pull them on, paused a moment then nodded her head with another grin.
“Perfect. Every man in forty yards will be drooling.”
Cora shot Jennifer a look that for anyone who wasn’t familiar with the Hales, might think she was becoming pissed off. She knew Jennifer wouldn’t think that though because underneath the deadpan expression the youngest Hale was aiming in the other female's direction, there was a slither of amusement that only those who knew her well would recognise.
“Didn’t take you for the sarcastic one, Jennifer.”
Now the smirk was definitely evident in her facial features before she gave a playful roll of the eyes.
She was going to make another comment about her brother, but figured that it might just give invitation to continue the topic of conversation so Cora decided against it. She really wasn’t keen to know what he got up to behind closed doors, even if it was just a playful threat at the moment.
“Oh, I am damn sure those lashes would work on all males and even a few females.....”
Cora liked to think they wouldn’t work on her though--she was pretty sure in fact unless there was some reason she wanted them to and she cared about Jennifer enough to relent sometimes.
“You’re very diplomatic ain’t you, Jennifer....I mean...calling a wolf grumpy could be seen as poking the bear..or whatever it is they say.”
She raised a slender brow and looked at her.
“Good job I know you.....and like you....”
Cora gave a playful nudge of the elbow into the other's ribs.
“I have never come across a hungry damn alligator. What planet are you on?”
Even Cora had to chuckle at this, but she knew very well the point Jennifer was making. It was just not something she talked about very often with people. The youngest Hale was very much a loner and didn’t socialise with groups of friends--she didn’t have that many anyway.
For a moment she fell quiet once she had Jennifer’s approval and then she gave a satisfied smile.
“I love them...but not for getting guys drooling...I just...well I like how they look on me.”
Giving it a little longer to admire them, Cora finally removed the boots from her feet and picked them up.
“Aren’t you getting anything?”
