âSheâs always had an agenda. Love is never just love for Katherine.â Frankly, Elijah didnât even want to speak about her anymore. A soft chuckle escaped him at the second half of Hayleyâs comment. âIâd say it has improved over the centuries.â At her words, his smile only grew wider, and all Elijah wanted to do was kiss Hayley in that moment. She was this perfect combination of softness and rough edges, a kind heart and a strong, stubborn mind. âThe things we do to survive donât make us who we are. Do you forget youâre talking to a Michaelson? The bad things youâve done pale in comparison to everything Iâve done in the course of a millennia. Point is, Hayley, youâre not the only one with a baggage. In fact, mine is far heavier than yours.â he said, his voice a little detached. If he dared to properly think about the things he had doneâŚWell, that wouldnât be a pretty picture. Elijah shook his head at her, further closing the space between them as he lifted her chin so he could look at her better. âIâll never abandon you. No matter what you do, no matter how many people you hurt, I give you my word. Youâd never do anything cruel unless it is absolutely necessary, that much I know about you.â A small smile appeared on his lips again as Elijah continued. âIf anything, I should be the one too afraid to get close. Unlike you, my siblings and I have committed heinous crimes just because we could. Iâve spent the majority of my long life being disgusted with who I am,â his voice broke just slightly at that, and Elijah blinked away any sorrow that was starting to settle inside him. âAnd yet, her I stand, begging you to stay. Because I know you feel it, too.â Elijah didnât have to elaborate that he was talking about this strange connection between them â sheâd know. Perhaps some would refer to it as kindred spirits, if you believed in such a thing. âIf you can look me in the eyes and say you do not, then I will let you go.â
âYou were in love with her,â she said slowly, registering what that meant. Katherine didnât deserve his love, that much Hayley was sure of. She was manipulative, vicious and careless, he was the kindest person the werewolf had ever known. She kind of wondered what Elijah saw in the cruel vampire, maybe she had some hidden qualities. Very, very well hidden. âThat remains to be seen.â If she was his type now, his taste hadnât improved that much and was still questionable at best. She might not be able to see what he saw in Katherine, but the same could be said about her. âYou have a point, I guess. Still doesnât mean you have to sign up to carry all of mine as well.â He was right about her, Hayley didnât hurt people unless she absolutely had to. Most of the time, she hurt people as a way of survivingâit was the only way she knew how. She wasnât sure how he knew that, but it was nice to hear someone had faith it her. âThatâs a really big promise to make. Huge, really,â she said quietly, her hands sliding down his fancy jacket to his chest. It mightâve been an unrealistic promise, it still warmed her heart and made her feel more welcomed that she ever had. If this was what having a family felt like, she would get used to it dangerously fast. âYou mightâve done bad things once, but youâre still the kindest person Iâve ever met. Everything youâve done for me, even though you barely knew me, I donât think I can ever repay you for that. You gave me a home,â she said, tapping his chest gently. âAnd I donât mean that fancy house you live in.â Of course she knew exactly what he was referring to, how could she not? She felt a pull to him she simply couldnât deny. It was like sheâd known him all her life, like they were meant to complete each other. She didnât answer him, instead she moved a hand to the back of his neck and pulled her to her lips. Somehow, she had never realized how long she had been wanting this, but now that it was happening she never wanted it to stop. Reluctantly, she pulled away but her lips still hovered close to his. âIâll stay.â
