what does kemal avci know, hm? if you asked aiyla avci, nothing apparently. even as he’s sitting opposite hakan at a family dinner that he predicted would happen. which aiyla isn’t at, without the excuse she had been offered to have. but, what does he know? he’s had to sit and listen to hakan for most of the evening, his parents wooed by him just as they were before. kemal remains stoic and unmoved, attempting to get any sly criticism in that he can without raising suspisions. with dinner finally over, it’s time for the tradition of departing into the study and kemal’s father excuses himself. only then does kemal’s fake smile drop to a straight line and he peers through hakan’s facade. “well done, now you only have to convince aiyla that you love her next.” he raises his brows as he looks into his whiskey glass before taking a sip. “oh and yourself. that would help.” @hakan-nacar​

It was hard to choose which Avci brother Hakan disliked the most. The simpering Ecrin or the calculated Kemal. In another life they could have been friends, if the bastard didn’t want to see him fail so miserably with Aiyla. Hakan’s charm was as easy to switch on as his hatred was, so the evening with his ex’s parents went well. They were excited to see Hakan and Aiyla reconcile, suggesting dates and evenings for them to make amends. When alone with Kemal, however, Hakan’s smile dropped just as his did and returned as a slow spread of a malicious grin. “This isn’t Alabama, Kemmy. You don’t have to be so...protective.” he mused slowly, sipping his drink. “Aiyla knows what’s good for her, she always has.”

She was there alone, which never bothered her but it meant not getting a VIP booth because it seemed pointless to get one by yourself. Instead she sat a table with a martini in hand watching over the room for potential companions. A network needed to be built along with a social life and there was no way in hell she was going to integrate herself into Madi’s social circle. It didn’t take long for her to see Hakan, picking the one familiar face out of the crowd. “You have got to be kidding me,” she hummed to herself. She got out of her seat and sauntered over his way, approaching him with a smile. “Hakan, darling, so this is where you ran off to.” A brow raised while she looked him over, still dashing and handsome with a mysterious air. “Don’t tell me you’ve come back to chase the Avci girl. Desperate is not a good look, honey.” 

Hakan’s relationships never followed an easy or relaxing route. He was possessive, controlling, demanding but could also change his mind at the drop of a hat. Leighton had been one of the stories he left behind, letting the whirlwind take over them both and realizing they were as bad as each other. It was fun while it lasted, funnier when it ended and hilarious when it all started up again. She was just the right amount of classy and exciting, but still Hakan was a focused man. Aiyla was in his sights and not even a Lauder billionaire could stop him. “Hiding from you, but I should have known those bug eyes would see me from the other side of the world.” he grinned and flicked his finger against the tip of her nose gently as he replied. “Work, actually. Don’t tell me you’re still jealous of Aiyla? She’s everything you’re not, just accept it.” 

“I think you just need to loosen up, Hakan. Blend in,” he let out a quick laugh at his friend’s stiffness. It was probably weird how Joaquin felt comfortable in most situations. He chalked it up to how on the move he’s been since a young age, constantly bouncing between places then doing it more as an adult. “I get that, you’re good at it, too. But it’s better to learn how to be good with all of it. Makes you stick out to rank up someday.” Like when Joaquin took over, he could make him his right hand and trust that he would get the job done despite the situation. “One of those real stuck up types, huh? Should have known that’s what you would be into. Can’t wait to meet her.” It became real just then how little they talk about their personal lives sometimes, despite Joaquin considering him a friend. “I like it here. Good air and easy to travel out of with the big airport so close. Think we could settle in here quite well.” He nodded, hinting to some of the ideas he had for Lockwood Springs. 

“Blend in?” He laughed at the suggestion, thinking he’d done a good enough job swapping his suit for jeans. “How much more do I need to?” he asked jokingly, gesturing to the casual attire. He enjoyed being surrounded by a wholesomeness of a connected family, something he didn’t have the pleasure of experiencing himself. But they were a rowdy bunch, he wished he could swap their location to a nice heated patio and people serving them. Hakan enjoyed his place within their roles, it granted him power quite easily and it was minimal work. His hands weren’t technically dirty just from botching numbers. “Is that how you rank up, huh? Blending in? Juggling?” he asked, curious but also casually. He wondered what could get much better than his current place. “When you see her, you’d let her do anything or say anything. Trust me.” Hakan laughed, but how he’d get Aiyla to even look at him again was another story altogether. “I grew up here, Northside.” Obviously. “I always considered it the kind of city where nothing exciting happens but...I was wrong. There’s a reason why we’re here after all, right?”

he doesn’t hate the man, after all they’re on the same team which by all accounts means dimitri has to at the very least trust him. but there’s something easy to dislike about hakan, perhaps the way he yields his power through little or no hard work. the exact opposite of what dimitri was taught. ‘didn’t think you’d be caught dead in a honky tonk.’ dimitri laughs because truthfully, neither did he. his thick brooklyn accent proves that he’s far from home too. ‘hate to break it to you kan, but only top shelf here is drinks the rats ain’t pissed on.’ he grins, joking with a serious demeanor. 

“Me neither.” Hakan admitted as he sat at the bar and gave Dimitri a nod to greet him. He only laughed at the joke because it was easier to and no amusement reached into his eyes. “Perfect, I’ve always liked my drinks without rat piss.” he replied. “You’ve been here a while now, yes?” he asked, mainly wondering if Dimitri could bring him up to speed on the things he had missed in the previous two years. Hakan always preferred to keep everything professional, he wasn’t there to make friends only to find out where money was disappearing to. “Talk to me, what fun has been happening?”

The whole party reminded Joaquin of the family events he had as a kid, even if it was normally outside big fancy houses and compounds. It was funny how often they mixed wealth back with their homegrown roots. He liked that. “Nothing wrong with a beer as long as it’s good,” he held up a bottle of a Spanish brand he knew and trusted. Joaquin laughed at Hakan’s comment and followed his gaze to the little cowboys. “You never been to a farm before, big shot?” He asked with eyebrows raised figuring the man’s status was starting to shine through. “These are country folk. You should see some of our growers in Mexico and California, all of them look like cowboys never died.” Joaquin looked around. “Guess they haven’t. What’s good with you?”

“I suppose.” Hakan agreed, mainly for the sake of making the conversation easier but he certainly knew he’d rather be reclining in a comfortable chair while drinking a stiff drink that cost more than most people’s watches. Being stood on some ranch land wasn’t really doing it for him. “I’m mainly used to country because of these guys, I’m better at the suits and ties talk of the business, you know?” he shrugged, but he guessed hierarchies existed for a reason. “Nothing much, killing business and pleasure in one swoop. My fiancee lives here, real beauty. I’ll have to bring her some time, but she’d not be caught dead within a mile of mud or the smell of bonfire smoke.” he laughed thinking that speaking in affirmations would bring Aiyla back to his arms. “You? You like the whole...set up here?”

It was different to the luxury that Hakan often demanded but his heart wasn’t cold enough to not appreciate the sentiments of the bonfire. He was only there out of respect for the business between his people and The Keepers, just to show his face before he slipped away. Taking a sip of beer, Hakan squinted and then looked at Joaquin. “I bought a nice bottle of red which seems to have disappeared and now I’m stuck with this.” he lifted the beer just as two toddlers waddled by in cowboy hats. Hakan watched them slowly as they passed him, before looking at his beer bottle. “Do they lace these?”

“A lesson?” Aiyla scoffed and her voice rose above the general ambiance of chatter, causing a few nearby heads to turn. “So I thought it was too soon to get married and your response to that was to run away for two years? Because of a lesson you made up in your head?” she pulled her arm out of his hold, just as sternly as she was speaking. “Hakan, you have no idea what I want and I actually don’t think you ever did.” she prodded his chest to try and get him to back away from her. “I don’t want to know you.” Aiyla then insisted, staring at him closely. She was angry, but also nervous. “I’ve already spent two years without you, I think you assumed that you’d take longer to get over than you were. Then again, I’m not surprised. You’ve always had an inflated sense of self.”

Hakan wasn’t surprised by Aiyla’s reaction but he was offended. His ego being bruised was the worst kind of pain in his opinion, and Aiyla was always good at trying to get him to humble himself. “No self respecting man would wait for a woman to make up her mind. When you love someone, you know. There’s no such thing as too soon.” he twisted her words quickly, hushing her with the hand she freed herself from. Too many people were nearby, and this was already embarrassing. “Fine.” Hakan then said firmly, standing tall and proud despite Aiyla’s words cutting through him. “I’ll stay out of your way, but you have to stay out of mine too.” he had to sound as if he was the one in control now, even if Aiyla was throwing around the orders.

Aiyla’s eyes rolled and she tilted her head. “Well, obviously but it’s rude to stare.” she quickly replied. Hakan’s sarcasm wasn’t appreciated but he did manage to make her feel guilty, which he always managed to do. She was never going to be a shrinking violet but it became obvious that is what he wanted to happen. “Canceling a wedding doesn’t mean ending a relationship but you decided to prove you were in fact, the dramatic one after all.” she bit back, posing for her little mic drop moment. “I don’t care to know how you’d make it romantic, I’m sure there’ll be some timid little women in here that would fall for it.” she gestured a finger around his face. “But this stopped working for me a long time ago.” Aiyla straightened her back as Hakan came closer and she kept her expression straight and unbothered. “I definitely don’t feel guilty, sorry if that bursts your bubble. I’m sure we can easily avoid one another, even in this high school.”

Hakan had very little impulse control and his mind was telling him that he was about to lose Aiyla all over again, despite her no longer being his. He believed she always was gong to be. “I wanted to teach you a lesson, make you realize the mistake.” Hakan warned her with a tight grab of her wrist, which to anybody else could look like a lovers affection as he stepped closer to invade her space. “If you want me to stay away from you, easy. I can do that but I know you don’t want it. You’ve let stupid ideas get in your head Aiyla, and I thought space would be exactly what made you see clearly.” he didn’t care if he sounded possessive, not when he believed he had the right to be. “Look me in the eyes and tell me you don’t want to know me at all, and then I’ll believe you.”

As soon as Aiyla heard the Turkish phrase, she rolled her eyes knowing exactly who said it. Two years without any contact, as if her not wanting to get married so soon meant that she didn’t care about him. She knew it was the right choice, feeling her friends and already loosely close family slip away even further the more time she spent with Hakan. He soaked up all of her energy and time, leaving her without much room for her own personality. “Of course you will, that’s what happens when you watch somebody.” she quipped, turning to face him with a stern look. “It’s only awkward if you make it awkward, which I’m sure you’ll try.” Aiyla added, looking around the high school for any excuse to leave the conversation. “There’s absolutely nothing romantic about this, I thought you were the Romeo of Istanbul, Hakan.” she prodded before sighing. “I was actually coping just fine, until I was rudely interrupted. Why are you here, Hakan? One of your million little apartments can’t be this important.”

“How can I help it when you are the most beautiful one in this place?” Hakan confidently answered Aiyla, ignoring the undertone to her words as he often had to. “There’s nothing that can be awkward. It’s not as if we were engaged with the invites ready to send before one of us chose to cancel it all. Oh...wait.” he tapped his finger over his chin as he pretended to think. “No matter, darling. It’s all the past. I can almost understand why you did it.” he shrugged, and grinned at her coldly. “Perhaps it’s not romantic because you haven’t had me to make it romantic.” he suggested with more cockiness, closing in on her space. “Business. It’s been long enough now, I gave you the space you wanted so badly so there should be no problem that I’m here for a while. Not unless seeing me makes you feel, dare I say it, guilty.”

“Kalabalığın içinde bile seni görebiliyorum.” Hakan wasn’t pleased that within a few weeks of returning to Lockwood Springs, he was going to experience a famous Colorado storm. Instead of using the time wisely to watch over the whole town that had congregated, Hakan’s attention had been locked onto one person only. Aiyla. Two years was long enough for the air to be cleared but not in Hakan’s view. She was his, and clearly the idea of being able to have a life that many people dreamed of together scared her away. “It’s not awkward is it?” he teased her by pulling a pretend expression of discomfort. “Locked up together in a high school during a storm. It’s like a bad romance novel.” he laughed, not caring that he was getting closer to her without even saying hello. They were beyond that. “How are you coping having to mingle with the peasants. It doesn’t suit you.”

All Aiyla could do was force a laugh at Hakan’s words. She wasn’t even excited to see him because how could her resolution of being a new person happen when he was still residing in the same city? Their paths were crossing more than she wished they would. “I know how to make schedules and send them, Hakan. I just forgot because of…everything.” she raised her chin and looked away from him for a moment. He was the only person she knew that was here, so to avoid looking like an unwanted date she decided to stand closeby. She was having PTSD flashbacks to Halloween, that was for certain. “Did you have fun being an actual humble person for a day? Instead of pretending to be one.” she could have thanked him for helping her but that wasn’t going to happen.

“Ah right. Everything.” Hakan nodded and was amused. He wasn’t privy to the things that happened in Aiyla’s life anymore but he could hazard a guess that what she thought was a big deal, actually wasn’t. “Everything being...making more money?” he teased her gently, because his sense of humor never ceased even when he knew Aiyla’s responses to it could erupt at any moment. He took the quip head on, nodding to her. “It was fun, I don’t think I made too many mistakes.” he chuckled, sipping his drink. “I can see why you enjoyed it, I think I booked a few people in with a guest who didn’t look like their wife or husband.”

“Oop, careful.” Bella said happily when someone nudged into her, but she didn’t notice who it was until it was too late. Great. She totally wanted to bump into Man-Bun. She smiled anyway, as kindly as she could. “Thanks but there’s no need.” Bella declined, shuffling slightly to the side to create some distance. Sure, there wasn’t a reason to dislike Hakan but good grief that was an awful excuse of a date. She started laughing at his question and glanced over her shoulder, to the last place she spotted Zak. “Not really anything to…sort.” she mumbled, hoping it wasn’t heard over the music as she looked back to Hakan. “Did you ever find a date who likes cheese as much as you do?”

Hakan didn’t feel awkward seeing Bella again, perhaps he should have but he was a glass half full kind of person. He saw it as a chance to apologize, let the whole situation be water under the bridge. Hakan laughed softly, looking ahead at the busy bar staff. “Sure? Looks like it’s a small wait.” he shrugged, letting the offer remain. He then looked at her puzzled, tilting his head slightly. “I didn’t talk about cheese that much. Did I? You ended up talking about it more.” he replied, tucking a hand into a pocket as he relaxed his standing. If he did talk about cheese a lot he needed to know. “Look, my ex is as difficult as yours seems to be. She would have told me if I talked about cheese too much.” he caught his word slip and shook his head. “Ex-ex.” 

NYE Party

Hakan didn’t notice who he was stood next to until his elbow moved into their arm by accident. He smiled politely to Bella, recalling their miserable date that was made worse by the appearance of her ex. “Sorry.” he said simply, gesturing to the line at the bar. “You can go ahead of me, if you like. As a way of apologizing for that night at Neue.” it was overdue but he wasn’t sure how to approach the subject. “Did you and Zak ever manage to...actually let’s...not talk about that.”

NYE Party

Haken was in good spirits, sitting in one of the event rooms and nursing a drink. He wasn’t someone who partied often but New Years Eve was a wonderful time to let go of the past and have a new start. Which was hard to focus on when the past was all around him. He noticed Aiyla entering and he looked away casually but looked back again to smile. She looked beautiful, but that wasn’t a surprise. It was more of a surprise to see her alone. “You’re not coming here to try and get me to work reception again are you?” he joked while laughing. “Did you figure out the schedules? Or how to send them at least?”

To say that Nathaniel felt like an idiot for not realizing this entire area wasn’t just ‘Downtown’ was an understatement. The city boy was definitely out of his depth. “I’ve never been to anything like this in my life.” Nate wasn’t sure he’d do it again, but he didn’t want to be rude if this guy was one of the people that set it up. It had nothing to do with how nice it was. Adjusting Cosmo’s leash, he held out his free hand, “Nathaniel. Thanks  for the offer and I’d appreciate it. Are you sure though? I don’t want to monopolize your time just because I’m… new around here?” There were about a dozen reasons what he needed help, blaming the lack of knowledge on the place on his move seemed the best, but it came out like a question which only made Nate fidget a little more with his hot chocolate.

Hakan laughed and looked around at the winter festival, the holiday season was lost on him. Especially this year, he only had his parents to visit in Turkey and that definitely made him feel lonelier. “Not a Christmas kind of guy?” Hakan asked with a smile before nodding. “Me neither, it’s not a holiday that we do back in Turkey. But it’s fun I think?” he shrugged, even though the stranger didn’t ask. “Hakan, or Kan is just fine.” He took the other mans hand into a friendly shake. “Don’t worry about it, I like making new friends. I’ve not been here for long either, less than a year. I wish I could give you more confidence in my direction skills but I can’t, I’m only less new than you.”
