Pearl’s vocabulary included ‘Wow”, “What a mess”, “Oh my God”, and “I love you”. She would high-five you with her foot.  Pearl was shot and killed in 2015. She was not yet 2 years old. Her murderer — if apprehended and found guilty — could face years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

As a Common Raven, Pearl was safeguarded by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, a law passed in 1918 that defends birds against hunting, poaching, and poisoning. Corvids, like eagles and owls, didn’t land a spot on the list of protected species until 1972, but the treaty now covers most native bird species in North America.
