belated mermay 🧜🏻♀️
It's so cool when a woman is a pervert!
Come to think of it, it really is insane that my entire country is burning alive and literally no one in the rest of the world cares. Thousands of Indians are dying every day from the heat, it's 45+ degrees in multiple areas, the government couldn't give two fucks, we're getting severe warnings and red alerts, and not a soul outside of South Asia is speaking about it because why would you ever care about brown people
please keep talking about how Becky from Maryland doesn't like the rising gas prices. It's clearly the more pressing issue.
USA folks, that is a consistent temperature range hitting 113°. Death Valley temperatures. In Banda, it hovered between 116°-118° (47°-48° C) for a week straight.
This has been happening all month with little to no international media attention. Here are a few organizations you can check out for resources or to support:
ActionAid India
SEEDS India
GlobalGiving
Raise India (Project Tapan)

big tshirt that says YOUR INTERPRETATIONS MUST HAVE A STRONG BASIS IN THE SOURCE MATERIAL on the front and I HATE FUN on the back
— Katherine Mansfield, from The Collected Letters of Katherine Mansfield (via lunamonchtuna)
Inspired by the "Triumph of Death" made by Pieter Bruegel the Elder circa 1562.
“What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? I answer; one day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sound of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciation of tyrants brass fronted impudence; your shout of liberty and equality, hallow mockery; your prayers and hyms [sic], your sermons and thanks-givings, with all your religious parade and solemnity, are to him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy – a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of the United States, at this very hour.”
— Frederick Douglass (1818-1895), from a speech given at Rochester, New York, July 5, 1852.

Diane, clear my schedule. I’m attempting a recipe that says “prep time: 15 minutes.”
my petty gripe about anachronism in historical/fantasy/spec-fic worlds is attraction language.
We’ve all heard the “should you use modern queer labels or not” argument but honestly even when people go “true, they wouldn’t use the labels ‘aromantic’ or ‘asexual,’” so often the characters describe their experiences as “I never felt romantic attraction” or “I don’t feel attracted to anyone” in ways that makes me go. You are stilllllll thinking about this in an extraordinarily modern online way. That 19th century steampunk detective man will NOT be angsting about having never felt romantic attraction, he would be angsting about being unable to feel moved by the beauty or charm of a woman, or something. And I do think that “attractiveness” language is different from the identity-level idea of experiencing attraction—Sherlock Holmes does not talk about not experiencing attraction, but when Watson says “What a very attractive woman!” Holmes responds “Is she? I did not observe.” (And then Watson calls him an inhuman automaton and calculating-machine and Holmes calls Watson’s judgement biased). Never swayed by the attractiveness of a man or woman, never desirous of marriage, never charmed by the delights of love, all of these feel like some of the variety of ways that someone in this milieu might describe an ace- or aro-spectrum identity more than “never felt attraction” does. Mostly because, like the terms for aromantic and asexual themselves, nailing down an exclusively attraction-based definition of a-spec identities is a relatively new and extremely post-AVEN thing. And yet in fiction everybody knows to articulate their experience as feeling sexual/romantic attraction. And I always want to go nooo how would THIS character think about it?? Not how you think this character SHOULD think about it, how would THIS person in THIS context articulate their feelings?
ladies… has anyone ever told you it’s okay to be feminine 🩷 i’m sure no one has ever ever ever reinforced this deeply held secret, that’s it’s okay for you to be feminine. 🩷 i know the world totally tries to tell you that you have to be manly and masculine and grow your body hair and eat as much as you want and get strong and stand up for yourself and make waves and take up space and show your bare face and show your anger. but it’s okay to do the exact opposite actually. 🩷 it’s okay to shrink yourself down to the exact same mold every other woman is expected to conform to. 🩷 did you know that it’s okay to be feminine. 🩷 did you know it’s okay to be feminine. 🩷 did you know it’s okay to be feminine. 🩷 has anyone ever told you it’s okay to be feminine. 🩷 will you be feminine. 🩷 will you be feminine. 🩷 will you be feminine. 🩷 will you just be feminine already. 🩷🩷🩷
Idk who needs to hear this, but the term "emotional labor" is not referring to you being there for a friend/loved one in crisis. Emotional labor is the need to hide, fake, or exaggerate emotions to keep up appearances for financial or social gain - like when a service worker has to keep smiling while getting screamed at. Other examples include things like laughing at your boss's joke you didn't find funny bc you're trying to get a raise, acting super excited to see family who have hurt you just to keep the peace, or, in social justice settings, minorities maintaining a calm and knowledgable affect to try to prove their deserving of equal treatment. Emotional labor is putting on a front to keep the peace and move forward.
You do not have to do that (nor should you) when holding space for a friend in crisis. If you are having to fake your emotions to keep the peace in that scenario, then there needs to be an honest conversation and some boundaries need to be established so you can both feel safe to bring your authentic selves to the table. Emotional labor does NOT refer to simply taking the time to listen to a friend's problems and reassure them. And frankly, if you're not willing to do that bare minimum for the people in your life from time to time, you are in fact a shitty friend and you should not be wondering why people are getting upset with you.
I get that there are times we all get too overwhelmed and dysregulated to be fully there for somebody. That is normal and fine. There are ways to navigate that so that everyone gets their needs met. What is not normal and fine is putting up a permanent wall to everyone and guilt-tripping people using therapy speak for asking you to be even somewhat emotionally available. That is, in fact, kind of gaslight-y to try to make somebody believe they are in the wrong for wanting support in a time of crisis.
