tumblr is where I learned ab divers teaching sharks they could eat lionfish, therefore helping them control the population of the invasive species.
however, a detail that post left out was how while the marine biologists thought they were only helping the sharks associate the lionfish with something edible, they ended up accidentally helping the sharks associate the spearfishing divers with something edible.
like so much so that sharks would follow spearfish divers while no lionfish are around, would bite the end of their speargun and it's even led to a few attacks. not only the 2 species of sharks they taught to eat lionfish (nurse sharks and reef sharks), but also blacktips and even barracudas and eels have ended up attacking divers because of this.
divers are now banned from feeding animals, as they should be, but now a lot more precautions need to be taken when spear fishers go out. when I first saw that initial post, I thought it was awesome - conservation and good press for sharks, hell yeah! but clearly some good intentions ended up with some bad results. I think it's important we remember that these are wild animals and the more comfortable they are around us, the more in danger they are.
