Another big theme in this book, apart from all of the science, and racism, is family. In spite of how poor they were treated, that the closest hospital that would treat them is 20 miles away, that the worked all day and were considered in poverty. The Lacks family stuck together, maybe even a little closer than one would like. They all loved each other, their friends and families. They all were there for one another, and made sure they got the care they needed, or got to the places they needed to go. Because when you don’t have the nice things in life, like so many of us have today, the only thing you have is each other. Your family. Henrietta Lacks loved her family, her countless number of relatives, friends, and children. They were all bound together through the hardships they faced, and how religious they were and how they believed things would get better for them.

This time that the story of Henrietta Lacks, also takes place at the same time as World War 2. Where multiple breakthroughs for African Americans took place. Where the Tuskegee Airmen allowed for African American pilots, and African Americans were allowed to get the higher up jobs due to the War. All of this eventually lead to African Americans standing up for their rights, and the whole civil rights movement began shortly thereafter. All African Americans had was each other. Their family, friends, and God. But they wanted, deserved, and most importantly, it was their God given right to have more. To have more rights and be considered equal, in all aspects, because we are, all of us walking this earth are equal.
