Thank you to my dear @soturoayami for tagging me <33 This was so fun to do with everyone -- I love thinking about where my DATV girls were before all the ...trouble.
Herahs is based before her father's demise, Melinoe is based before she is given over to Ghilan'nain, and Aurora is based before she is captured by pirates. So, you know, the good times.
Please, feel free to use me as inspiration to create your own baby ocs
Tagged by my dear friend @wickedadaar <33 Some of my favorite stories are set in the early 1800s. This meiker was especially lovely to do.
This features...
Lady Herah Mercar, ward of Lord Quintus Mercar, Duke of Minrathous
Miss Melinoe Ghila'sara, student of Lady Ghilan'nain
Aurora, ladies' maid to Lady Herah Mercar

Iâll admit, I am partial to your mistakenness for love. You love like a fist, like a knife. So sharp youâre overwhelmed by the sting, and so forceful it knocks the air right out of you. Love is not love to you, without danger, risk, and obsession. If it does not overwhelm, then it feels hollow. If it does not hurt, then where is the proof that it even existed? You wear scars like a medal of honour. The pain was intense; it hurt, and you gritted your teeth. But it made you feel oh so.. alive. Unfortunately, I must tell you that love is not meant to scorch you. It is meant to warm you. You need a flame, not a bonfire.
This is interesting. She has no past love life, but she does have someone she loved. Perhaps they would have an intense relationship.
There was no mistake; it was his motherâs voice. She had a unique smoothness to her notes that heâd rarely heard since she disappeared in the Vyrantium marketplace twelve years ago. The weapons slackened in Jerranâs grip until they hung limply at his side. Mamae?Â
No. It was a trick. It had to be. His mother was gone.
The Childâs scream shook him out of his stupor as they clapped their hands over their ears. âTOO LOUD!â The Child shrieked.Â
Clasping their hands over their ears, they screamed, âI NEED SPACE!â before darting off into the fog.
âHey, wait, daâlen!â Fuck, fuck, fuck! Regaining a firm grip on his weapons, Jerran charged after the Child.Â
Where are you? Where. Are. You?
All Jerran could hear was his heavy breathing and the muffled crunch of his boots against the dusty floor. âDaâlen?â he called. This kidâŚ. Having to play Halla and Wolf like a childâŚÂ Â
How long was this room? No matter how far he walked, it seemed to stretch further and further. He paused to reach for his water and grimaced when he remembered the Demon had swiped his belt. Reaching down, he drew an arrow in the dust in an attempt to mark the way; as soon as he stood, a frigid breeze obscured any trace of the mark.
Shit. Was it hours? Days? Jerran turned around; with a thick mist coating everything like a shroud, this place was more confusing than the Necropolis. He startled when the Voice echoed around him.
âWhat is it that you desire most?âÂ
âFuck off. I donât have time to play this game,â Jerran snapped. He stepped toward the direction where the Child fled â-Â
And tripped as the ground seemed to cave beneath him. His stomach flipped and he gasped sharply at the sensation of falling.
âTime? You have all the time in the world right now,â the Voice said, laughing gleefully. âLetâs seeâŚ. Fame? Love? Wealth?â It paused, nails tapping.
Jerran didnât answer, fearing that heâd puke up whatever was left in his stomach.
âAh. Prestige. You wonder what life would have been like as a noble's foundling, yes? Not having to scrape for scraps in the gutter, given the best education. Having a mother who was more than just a liberati.â
Licking his lips, Jerran tried to speak around a dry mouth. âOkay, fine. I just want to get out of this fucking trap.âÂ
As though he didnât answer, The Voice continued, âOr âŚ. You always hated feeling helpless. Be honest â you didnât join the Midnight Stars or the Wardens out of duty or the longing to belong. You wanted something, didnât you? You wanted power. Anything to keep from being helpless again. And youâll do anything to get it. Even sacrificing your values and your body.â
It paused before its tone sharpened. âSo I ask you again, little elf: What is it that you most desire?â
This demon really liked to monologue. âFuck off.â Jerran reached out to grab at the ground flying by him and touched merely air. His fingers passed through the seemingly solid rocks. An illusion.
Taking a knee, he touched unseen ground. Youâre not falling. Itâs just the stupid demon. Closing his eyes, he breathed in deeply, coughing slightly on the dust to re-orient himself. The runes⌠how long were they activated? He touched the tip of his nose with his wrist. No blood yet. I need to speed this along.Â
The ground â and his vertigo â steadied. Standing, Jerran peered at the darkness around him. âYeah, yeah, yeah, guilt-trip me into doing something stupid with a long boring-ass speech. Yâknow what? I sucked at paying attention in class. So hurry it up before I fall asleep.â
The Voice from before sighed. âI was hoping to have a civilized conversation, but since you have the attention span of a gnat, memories will have to do.â Â
Piercing, dazzling, white light blinded him. Throwing up his arm to block the flash, he turned to shout at the Voice. What the fuck.Â
The painful light eased back and Jerran found himself standing in an empty space. âWhat theâŚ. Where am I?â He took a step forward, hearing the dust crunching under his boots.Â
The blank space changed. Memories bled into each other like water tossed over chalk paintings at the end of the day. He turned, trying to avoid them, but they continually shifted into his field of vision.
Jerran saw himself, age eight, crying as his father told him that Mamae was never coming back; then he was suddenly in a Vyrantium alley watching his younger self clutching a gold coin smeared with horse dung as several older boys chased him âÂ
Then himself a bit older, defending a helpless girl from drunk nobles. His broken arm dangled as the men poured cheap rye whiskey over his head and threatened to cut him or shove the bottle up his âÂ
Vyrantium shifted; suddenly he was in the middle of a dark town. A boisterous crowd of laughing mercenaries surrounded a shop, dousing it in lantern oil and trampling over its broken doors.Â
A slight figure stepped forward and lit a match, revealing himself, age fourteen. A mop of overgrown curly hair that tumbled down to his shoulders. Young Jerran tugged at the tunic sleeves swallowing his thin arms and nearly tripped in leather boots engulfing his feet.Â
This night â this night was seared into his memory. Jerranâs mouth went dry at the scent of a familiar, spicy tobacco permeating the air.Â
Please, donât do it.Â
Young Jerranâs eyes gleamed in the dim light as he turned to look toward the man towering above him. âI get to be a member, right? If I do this? The shopkeeper isnât home, right?â
Edrik Kesper. Just as Jerran remembered him â seemingly larger than life, with the damned pipe in his mouth, puffing smoke. Burly, with muscles swung a large axe like it was a childâs toy. Â
The man knew every name, every scrap of information of the fifty or so mercenaries under his command. He's been the balm for Jerran's wounded soul that cried out for a father. Jerran had idolized him, wanted to just be like him.
But now, with clarity gained from experience and passing of time, Jerran now saw the coldness in the humanâs squinting grey eyes. A momentary sneer hovered on Kesper's narrow lips as the younger Jerran turned away from him to high-five the crowd.
The mercenary leader guffawed and slapped the smaller elf on the back, staggering him. He puffed away at the pipe in his mouth. âSon, after this Initiation, youâre a Midnight Stars member, all right.â
Donât. Please. Jerran opened his mouth to shout.
With a flourish, Young Jerran tossed the match into the building and grinned as the timber instantly caught on fire.
Kesper whooped, raising Young Jerranâs arm in the air. âThe First Partâs done! Halfway to being a member, boy!â
Jerran knew that the crackling and roar of flames filled his younger selfâs ears and the headiness of the alcohol and attention had distracted him enough where the sounds faded into the background.Â
But with his current honed hearing trained after weeks in the Deep Roads, this time, Jerran heard it â- a thin wail of agony rose from inside the burning shop.Â
The realization hit him with the full force of an ogre: his first kill hadnât been a mercenary train.Â
Jerran staggered, the runes flickering rapidly.
Other memories â killing merchants and mercenaries, becoming a Grey Warden. Being trapped with Kaed in a Venatori hideout, taking his eye. The images marched mercilessly through Jerran's mind until he screamed, âEnough! I get your fucking point!â
The Voice tsked at him. âWith a past like that? Youâre nothing but a liberarti murderer and a thief. Did you really think you were good enough for Eleanor Rudith Amaryllis Ingellvar? She has the finest education afforded to her as a member of nobility. You drag her down to your level.â
It was true. The amount of time heâd embarrassed her. The stupid voice didnât even need to replay the memories this time. He curled up, remembering her face when heâd accidentally insulted her relative at a Nevarran ball:Â
âI would have expected even a foundling daughter of Khoen and Yesult to know her manners better,â the woman looked at him like he'd stomped all over her fine robes in muddy boots.Â
He bit back a choice retort. âThen I guess youâre not worth ââÂ
Eleanor grabbed his arm, looking absolutely horrified. âDuchess Isa Ingellvar, may I present Junior Grey Warden Jerran Thorne? My suitor.â
So, this was that Duchess. Jerran raised an eyebrow.Â
âMmm.â The duchessâs lips twisted. Then she dismissed him and took Eleanorâs hands. âEleanor, please extend my courtesies to your parents. Tell them that they were sorely missed and we may need to discuss budget cuts the next time we meet.â The woman immediately turned away.Â
Jerran glanced down at Eleanor, who looked like she was visibly wilting. âEllie?âÂ
âThat was her. The one that Mother and Father wanted me to greet. I failed to recognize her and nowâŚ.â She hesitated, blinking rapidly. âJerran, just let me speak with people, all right? Please.âÂ
Shit. âEllie, I â-âÂ
âItâs not your fault. You didnât know.â She forced a smile, but he could still see a hint of tears in her eyes.
âOr that time you mixed up metaphor and meteor on the Notice Board? Or when you became the official lightweight Drinker at the Lighthouse with the baby bottles? Your so-called Veilguard companions take pity on her, you know. The irony â the booklover with a barely literate libarati.â
That wasnât true. Sheâd told him repeatedly that he was enough. That⌠He faltered. He was trying to further his education. But the gods and constantly fighting Venatori and Darkspawn slowed that endeavor. And for some reason he just couldnât stay focused on the words.
âBut I can fix that. You can live out the life that youâve wanted. Become worthy of someone of her station. Everything changes with just one little event." A mahogany door appeared at the end of the room. âWould you like to see your mother?â
Mamae? He looked around, a spark of hope igniting in his chest. âMy mamaeâs alive?â
The door swung open, revealing a shadowy room that wavered and shimmered like a melted painting. âWhy donât you find out?â
There was so much that he wanted to tell her. He never got to say good-bye, or how much he loved her. Their last conversation was an argument over doing his schoolwork â a stupid, trifling thing that had nearly driven her to tears.
He had to tell her about joining the Wardens, Eleanor, everything. His feet seemed to move on their own; he found himself standing in front of the door. Faintly, he could hear familiar laughter that he hadnât heard in over a decade. Mamae.Â
A coldness passed through him as he stepped through the barrier, a rush of wind not unlike the Eluvians, then a flash. Jerran closed his eyes.

If you havenât, please read Cunning Shadowsâ Prologue first! This picks up directly after that. Â
Original prompt:
The room is dark and cold. Nothing can be heard from outside, and there is no smell. The walls are blank with only the smallest bit of light shining through from a window far above you.Â
In the corner, sits a young boy who seems to be made of shadow. His shoulders shake as his face is curled into his lap as though he is attempting to make himself even smaller. If you grow close enough, the smallest of whimpers can be heard.
With a cackle, the demon snapped its long fingers and all went dark. The last they heard in space was the simple whisper: âLet's begin.â
â-----
Jerran froze as everything went dark. For a few long moments, only the heavy sound of his own breathing echoed in his ears; he stretched out his arms in an attempt to gauge the space around him. His fingers touched only air. Where am I?
Despite the layers of armor, a slight shiver ran through his body, and he coughed as his feet accidentally kicked up unseen clouds of dust. He swallowed, his saliva tasting of ashy grit. The air stabbed his lungs like a Crowâs knife.
The darkness seemed to lighten into a dull gray as his elven eyes adjusted. Looking around, Jerran found himself in a large room with corners that seemed to blur into inky shadows. Dust motes danced in the dim light shed by an opening far above his head.Â
He took a step forward with a muffled crunch, Â covering his mouth and nose with his right arm. Silence pressed in around him, only broken by the sound of his own footsteps.Â
Something â someone? â whimpered. Jerran whipped around, his hand grappling for a sword missing from his side, a bow that no longer hung from his back. He raised his fists defensively and took a stance. âHey? Anyone there?â he called softly, words landing heavily in the space between the unknown entity and himself.
He turned at the slight rustling of cloth and then a scraping movement from the farthest corner across the room. There. Cautiously, he edged forward, prepared to run or fight. As he drew closer, he spotted the unmistakable shape of a small humanoid huddled against the wall.Â
Two miniature elongated ears emerged from slits cut into a worn brown hood that covered the strangerâs face. Even as Jerran stared, the child â at least they looked like a child â curled up, shoulders shaking as they whimpered.Â
This had to be a trick, right? Jerran stopped several feet away out of the childâs reach. âHey, kid. Are you all right?â
âI⌠I donât know.â Their shoulders trembled as they used the sleeve of a worn brown tunic to wipe under the hood. When they pulled their arm away, snot glistened near their wrist. âI wanna go home. I want my mamae.â
Mamae. An elf? The young voice was oddly familiar, one that Jerran had heard before. . But, there didn't seem a way for him to quite place it. It was as though his mind wouldn't allow him.Or perhaps it was the surroundings. The cold air. Who knew?Â
Jerran softened his tone. âHow did you get here? Are you from the Circle of Mages?â
Before the child could reply, a familiar, deep voice echoed through the room. âTo state that I will get you is â if you lose⌠it is not you that I want, but that of your body. Either way...I will have access.â
âYeah, yeah.â Jerran felt his head begin to throb in time to the runes pulsing in his back and neck. âHurry up, Iâm getting bored.â Where was it coming from? He couldnât pinpoint it.
He nearly jumped at the clatter of steel falling behind him â the noise raucous in the otherwise still room that seemed to smother the childâs whimpering. Turning, Jerran found his weapons carelessly tossed in the middle of the floor. He coughed as the dust coated his lungs.Â
The Demon whispered, âPick them up and we shall begin the test, little worm..."
Jerran edged backwards, eyes and ears alert in case anything tried to ambush him. After a few long moments, he snatched up the quiver and bow, looping them around his back before he picked up the shortsword and his bollock dagger. The runes made the weapons feel feather-light. He hefted them experimentally. "Now what, stupid slug?"
A snap of invisible spindly fingers accompanied the voice as it surrounded and filled the room. âWe shall now beginâŚâÂ
Jerranâs ears picked up the strange noise of liquid filling a cup. Two shadowy beings appeared in the room on either side of him, swaying like snakes that heâd seen in a Rivani marketplace.
At the sight, the child screamed and attempted to crawl further into the corner.
In the dimness, Jerran could see the one on his right, a twisted, spindly thing, shifting forward, its shadow dragging across the ground. At the childâs shrill cry, it abruptly turned and reached toward the helpless young elf.
âNow...protect that child..."
The second hunched Shadow swung around and began in the direction of Jerran, sliding right up to his face -- seemingly ready to consume him in its darkness.
Jerran dodged and swung his dagger at the shadow swaying in his face. The blade slashed across its neck where the cataroid artery would be located. The slash felt cold on Jerran's hand, but the hit certainly touched something â the shadow growled hollowly in response.
It reached out towards the elf, but Jerran easily ducked away from its slow attempt. The child. Where was the child? He frantically searched the room.Â
There. Â The child clawed at the far wall, doing all that they could to try and get through it before the shadows arrived at their side. They seemed to...know these shadows. Or at least...their intent.
The first Shadow, ignoring Jerran, swept and stood before the child, growing seemingly larger in size. A hand disconnected from its cloud and reached towards the child's head, connecting slowly. The child screamed at the touch. A sharp agony - blinding as one of his grenades â exploded in Jerranâs head.
Staggering, he clutched his forehead; only thousands of hours of training prevented him from losing his hold on his weapons. He struggled to take in a breath â and choked as a dark mist clouded his vision.
Fuck! Heâd lost track of the secondShadow. Jerran reached up to grab his throat as it encased him, slipping through his lips into his throat, pulling all oxygen with it. Canât breathe⌠air⌠pleaseâŚÂ Â
From the corner of his eye, he saw the child in the first Shadowâs grip. Fury at his own helplessness filled him. .Donât you fucking touch them!
As though in response to Jerranâs thoughts, an unseen force slammed down the first Shadow like a hammer driving upon its wispy body. It screeched and shot across the room to the opposite wall of the child.Â
His head cleared along with the pain.Â
Now.Â
Jerran flipped his dagger around and repeatedly stabbed the second Shadowâs chest, a coldness enveloping his hand with each slash. With his other hand, he attempted to yank the Shadow from his mouth; he only had one shot before he lost consciousness.
With a screech, the Shadow flew from Jerran's body, dragging further against the floor as though much of the strength had escaped with its 'stab wound'. It slid into the wall, clawing at it as though it wanted to escape now.
The first Shadow noted its partner struggling, and rushed towards them; after a moment, the they both oozed away from Jerran and the child. Jerran blinked; for an instant, he thought he caught sight of a manâs familiar features flickering across the first Shadowâs face â a man who had abandoned him after the loss of his very mother.Â
A small hand tugged at his wrist as an even smaller voice whispered, âMister? Are you okay?â
Relief along with a hint of wariness filled Jerran as he turned to find the Child standing at his elbow, the hood obscuring their face. They sounded young. Maybe an immature five year old? He pulled back his hand. Who knows what the fuck was wandering in the Fade and why were they connected? âWho are you?â
âI⌠I donât know.â Their shoulders trembled as they used the sleeve of a worn brown tunic to wipe under the hood. When they pulled their arm away, snot glistened near their wrist. âI wanna go home. I want my mamae.â
Makerâs Balls. Jerran sighed. âYou can stick with me unless youâre a demon or something. Then Iâll have to kill ya.â Okay, maybe I shouldn't have said that, he thought as the Child burst out sobbing. But⌠if it was a demon, it wouldn't have an issue with that, right? âCome on. Promise I wonât kill you. But we arenât going to get anywhere if we just stand here.â He offered his hand again.
The Child stared at Jerranâs hand before slowly taking it in his. Jerran tried once again to peer under the hood, but the Child turned to wipe at their nose. We canât stay here. Taking a deep breath, he stepped forward.
_________
As they walked, a thick fog settled over them, muffling all sound, including their footsteps. Jerran held up his hand; even with his Elven abilities, he still had trouble seeing all five fingers in the dim light.Â
The Child had dropped his hand a while back and walked silently next to his elbow. A few faint sniffles helped Jerran keep track of their presence. How had a Child ended up in the Fade? And why were the Spirits trying to capture them? Not for the first time, Jerran wished he was a mage and not a rogue. He tightened his grip on his sword.
The first Shadow crouched just out of the elfâs line of sight, its eyes blinking silently at the two standing in a swirl of mist. It swayed to a tune that only it could hear, dark tendrils wafting from its body.
The Child suddenly stumbled and Jerran reflexively caught them by the shoulder. âHey. You okay, daâlen?â
They shuddered, flinching.
Jerran instantly released them, his heart sinking. Heâd seen that look many times before, had done it himself. âSorry,â he muttered. âWonât do it again. Do you need a rest ââÂ
Then he heard it. A low humming that sent a shiver through his body and his hands shook. It seemed to come from nowhere and yet everywhere, surrounding them, bursting from their chest. It was a sound that he hadnât heard in twelve years since he was eight years old.

Thank you for wanting to know more about my girls, I love talking about them <33
Paradox: Whatâs Rookâs opinion on Blood magic?
Would they/have they ever participated in Blood magic (casting it, providing blood for it, was it their own or someone elseâs etc.)
Magic is a strange subject for Aurora. She herself is not considered a "mage," but there still seems to be some magic like abilities about her (such as her muse magic, the runic sword only she can use, etc.) so all magic is a bit off putting. She was also raised amongst the Qun for several years and taught a very specific way to view magic.
So, her relationship with it as a whole is complicated. As for Blood Magic, it is something that, like any other ability that can be used for good and for bad, it all comes back to the one using it. It's a form of magic, and like all forms of magic, it comes with a cost. And that cost depends on your actions.
Personification: Whatâs Rookâs opinion on Necromancy? If your Rook is a necromancer, do they consider it a form of blood magic?
(AFAIK it canonically is, but thatâs not an opinion held by all in Thedas)
It creeps her out. The undead, spirits, bones, etc. are not her favorite subjects. She's experienced death in a lot of different ways and has a strong belief that those who die should be left alone. As in, their bodies should be left to rest and not messed with.
So, Necromancy is a bit of an odd subject for Aurora and not one she will search someone out to speak on.
Aurora grew upon on the east coast of the Free Marches and then amongst the Qun. And, like most in those areas, she has a pretty solid Northern/Midwestern American accent. That's why I chose Erika Ishii as her VA.
Now, due to living and learning the ways of the Qun, she tends to switch up her swears between English and Qunlat -- and she tends to swear a lot, especially when stressed or scared or angry. Her favorite word amongst them is 'fuck'.
She has a clear voice. She pronounces and speaks at the volume that a situation requires. She's a natural leader and can bring together a room with her voice alone. She also holds a lot of empathy and can control her voice in certain situations. But, it can grow chaotic depending on her own emotions.
As for word choice, she is elegant like Herah or poetic like Melinoe. Actually, she talks the most like I do. She's my youngest character, and so her patterns and choice of words reflect that, despite what she's been through.
Vignette: Describe the first time Rook got very injured. What was their reaction?
Ex: Illusions of their past/wants, trapping them behind an emotion? (hello regret đĽđ), promising them help in achieving their goals?
The first major physical injury that Aurora suffered from would have been the day that she lost her father at sea during a storm and was taken by the Raiders of the Waking Sea.
She'd suffered from bruises, cuts, and a head injury while hiding in the cabin as her father attempted to get them out of the storm.
Not too long after that, when she walked out onto a beach after finding her way through the destroyed boat, the Raiders showed up and weren't exactly the kindest while 'handling' her and getting her onto their ship as a part of their...supplies.
Cliffhanger: If a spirit wanted to trap your Rook in the fade, what would their best plan be?
It's funny how that's something that is happening right now in her story. She is currently trapped by a Spirit (demon) of Envy. She was traveling with a fellow Grey Warden, Jerran, to get to the Lighthouse and officially join the Veilguard.
They are using her past and those she cares about against her. Those that she loved. Using relationships and memories is the perfect way to go after her. They are important to her. They smother out all the terrors. And that is what is happening for her right now. They are using the very image and voice of her greatest friend [and love] Ziramau, her time with her as a child, to make her sensitive and confused and weak. And it is working well.
There are two answers to this question. And it's even greater when both answers are placed together.
The first reminds her the most of her first home, Wycome. A town that sits right along the Amaranthine coast, only a single mile away from the sea. The scents, sounds, and sights that come with being upon the edge of the sea allow her to remember her time as a child and the warm home she once occupied with her father.
The other answer is being around those who treat her like her father did. Like Ziramau and her teachers did. With respect and kindness. Those who treat her as though she is equal to them and the family.
Lapsang Souchong: If your OC were a scented candle, what would they smell like?
Like I did with my other Rooks, I decided to take a test for one scent and decide on my own for the other.
The test was decided on Vanilla. Which I certainly agree with. Aurora is a sweetheart who is still getting used to being a sweetheart. The quiz results included lines such as "open to new experiences" and "spending time with friends". Both of which are things young Aurora always dreamed of doing, and what Aurora is doing now. She lost her family early in life, and her greatest friend not much long after. She is determined to hold onto those she cares for with the greatest strength she can. Vanilla is about warmth and security -- both of which define Aurora.
The other is any sort of candle with an Ocean Breeze. Aurora was born on the beach and grew up feet away from the ocean. It is within her history and her blood. It is the atmosphere she always seeks. The ocean is grand and powerful and loud. But also serene and sweet and cool. And when I think of the kind of fighter Aurora is...these descriptions fit her quite well.
Matcha: What is your OCâs preferred little treat?
Anything warm and sweet. She is quite obsessed with sweet treats, though she feels a bit embarrassed about how she acts whenever she gets her hands on one. She didn't have much access to them as a child. Warm, sweet treats were a rare reward. And then as a part of the Qun and Grey Wardens, they didn't get much access to anything sweet. So, things like freshly baked cinnamon rolls or apple dumplings are her immediate go-to. And they are something she will always be grateful exists on this earth.
Thank you for asking about my beans @lifegoblet @teamtakagi @vishantikaffar @elfmaid @tieflingsorcerer @thecrowsruleantiva @a-mumbling-nerd
