So back…a while ago I made a post about things MDZS fandom really needs.  And from that post someone made a fantastic Guide to Chinese/pinyin terms.  And now I have my own contribution, a list of every chapter of the Mo Dao Zu Shi/Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation novel along with summaries of what happens when.  

Because I know as a writer I often want to look at a particular scene in canon to refresh my memory or check something, but it’s nearly impossible to remember what happens when due to the different chronologies in each version of the story.

So I spent the last couple weeks listening to the audio drama and skimming the novel and making notes.  Hopefully they are useful and understandable to more than just myself, but you can definitely see my prejudices.  Like entire chapters where it’s basically just “people talk…plot”  versus deep detail on Wangxian scenes.  Anyway, here it is, I hope it helps.

[LWJ arrives]

LWJ: Brother. 

LXC: Wangji, you’re here. 

LWJ: Mn. (pauses) These rabbits…

LXC: Ah. Today, as I was was resting at the base of the back mountains in the Cloud Recesses, a group of whites rabbits came around by themselves and wouldn’t leave, so I thought, this must be a bit of a lucky meeting. I remembered that you have a pair of rabbits that Wei-gongzi gifted you so I thought it would be nice to bring these rabbits back to be their friends as well.

LWJ: Mn.

LXC: It appears that the new rabbits also like this patch of grass. They should have a wonderful time playing here.

LWJ: Mn.

LXC: When the pair of rabbits Wei-gongzi gave you have offspring, it’ll become even more lively around here.

[WWX in the background: Lan Zhan really likes the rabbits I gave him~]

LWJ: (gay surprise) Uh…

LXC: From now on, if Uncle asks about it, we can just say that we’ve especially sectioned off this patch of grass to raise rabbits. That way, the pair of rabbits Wei-gongzi gave you will be harder to single out from the rest.

LWJ: (gay hestitation) Brother… 

LXC: Mn?

LWJ: Both those rabbits are males.

LXC: Really? (laughs) So that’s how it is, huh. Ah, (sighs). It’s been so long since I’ve seen you this happy. To think of it, the pair of rabbits Wei-gongzi gave you are really fascinating. Their temperaments are clearly distinct — one is calm, the other is rowdy. Look! The rowdy one has already gone over and started playing with the new rabbits.

LWJ: (sighs)

LXC: The quiet one, though, is just off to the side by himself. He has a rather lonesome aura. Eh? What’s he doing? He—! He’s … chasing away the new rabbits?! He doesn’t like his new friends?

LWJ: I’ll go separate them.

LXC: (smiles) This white rabbit looks like he’s the calm one, so no one would think he’s actually got quite a fierce side. In the end, he’s the one who chased all the new rabbits away. Look, the other rabbits are all huddling in the corner now and afraid to go near. (laughs) They look so pitiful right now.

LWJ: He’s holding his ground, is all.

LXC: I’ve never heard of a rabbit who was defensive over his territory before. [A/N: refers to physical territory]

LWJ: It has nothing to do with territory.

LXC: What do you mean?

LWJ: (sighs) It’s nothing.

LXC: Ah? Where are you taking those two rabbits? You don’t want to leave them here so they can make new friends?

LWJ: No need. It’s better like this.
