SnK 85 review (+ theories)
Since the CR scans are up, Iām ready for my review. Hopefully, previous translations let me simmer everything up and I can now deliver, with full pictures!
First of all, I have to say I lowered my expectations by a significant margin since chapter 84 happened. As such, chapter 85 came off as quite decent in my honest opinion. Some things were addressed while the others are still left on the touch for the next months to come.
Iāll start with my biggest disappointment: the lack of focus on the warriors, who are probably gone for yet another several months. The manga approaches to an end and they are left away once again, leaving blanks in their timeline. While they get sympathy points it doesnāt help viewing their side is still as muddy as ever, especially when they just lost Bertolt. Letās pray it wonāt last a whole arc like in the Uprising.
Next, the chapter itself. (Warning: extremely long post behind the cut!)

Good analysis!Ā
I do hope Hitch has a larger role to play coming up, actually (maybe with Annie?). And I suspect we donāt have any pure villain, but Zeke and Zackley need to have their power taken away in the final arc due to their villainous actions.Ā
I, however, am not worried about Levi, despite all the gloomy predictions - other thanĀ āGod he is in so much pain/traumaā which he does NOT deserve. Sob. But his actions seem pretty consistent with someone who lost their best friend - a bit reckless, sure, but not out of character.
But Leviās not Kenny. Kenny was a serial killer with little respect for life before he met Uri. Before he met Erwin, Levi defended Isabel, had two close friends, and stole to survive. He valued life to a degree Kenny didnāt, even after Uri. I suspect Levi will live likeĀ Mikasa when she thought Eren died at Trost - living if only to remember his Liege. He may still find a way to live a valuable life. He cares for his squad. And, after all, badass close friend and brilliant human Hange Zoe is there to support him.
Knowing my personal thoughts after the previous chapter, Zackly needs to put his shit machine to good use, ahemā¦
About Hitch, we still have at least a good portion to digest when it comes to infodump+eventual issue so Iām expecting at worst a full panel where she breaks in tears and at best two pages about how the Survey Corps are the worst.
The problem is when Mikasa was holding to life when Eren was thought to be dead in Trost, itās because Eren told her so. Itās her vow. With Levi, his vow is to kill the Beast Titan. Since you donāt fulfill promises easily in this manga, itās safe to assume Levi will either realize killing Zeke is worthless or simply lose his life against him, as Zekeās taking extra precautions from now on. Also a liege in an Ackermanās life only happens once. Because Erwinās gone, Leviās strength greatly diminished.
Yep @perfectackeracy is right. A lot of people forget this. The only reason Mikasa kept living is because that was what her liege told her to do. He told her specifically to live and fight.
