[So... might I have the pleasure?]

I only just got into Hazbin about a month ago, so I had no idea about the background behind that song until literally today.

But looking back, I think my instinct to avoid it wasn't random. My canon-first mindset was quietly working in the background — steering me away from something that didn't belong in the world I was exploring.

Happy Weekends! Thinking about Season 3, I'd like to share one small hypothesis. Lilith's most defining mystery is simple: she has not spoken a single word since the show began. We never hear her voice. Not once.

The Deal

In S1E8, Lute tosses Adam's halo before Lilith and declares:

"Adam is dead. Your deal is done and I'm in charge now. Your brat is threatening the very foundation of Heaven. And if you want to stay here, you're going down there and stopping that bitch."

This confirms:

A deal existed, and Adam's death terminated it.

Lute was present and likely understood its contents.

Lute mentions Charlie — though her connection to the deal remains unclear.

"If you want to stay here" means Lilith chose to stay in Heaven, and she is allowed to descend to Hell at will.

Lilith's response? She looks down. She says nothing.

The Sacrifice

In Jewish tradition, Lilith was Adam's equal — made from the same earth — and she chose freedom over submission.

But Hazbin Hotel is, at its core, a story about love in all its forms — and I believe that with all my heart. What if Lilith made the opposite choice?

The hypothesis: to protect Lucifer and Charlie, Lilith chose submission over freedom — not for herself, but for her family. She surrendered her voice — her power to inspire Hell through song — in exchange for Lucifer and Charlie's safety.

The woman who once refused to kneel chose to kneel. For her family.

The Witnesses

At its heart, this deal was likely a ceasefire negotiation.

If so, it is not difficult to imagine Lute standing at Adam's side — which is why she was able to inform Lilith of the deal's conclusion.

By the same logic, someone would have stood at Lilith's side as well. A native of Hell, an Overlord with the standing to serve as witness. My choice is Rosie.

As the long-standing ruler of Cannibal Town, she carries the kind of authority and history that such a moment would demand. It is also reasonable to assume she had some prior relationship with Lilith, one ruler to another.

Why Rosie Sent Alastor to the Hotel

If this theory holds, Rosie witnessed Lilith's sacrifice firsthand. She understands the depth of that love — and the weight of that decision.

It follows, then, that Rosie would want to protect Charlie. Lucifer, as the King of Hell, can presumably look after himself. But Charlie is another matter.

And Rosie, as we know, has her pet.

In S1E5, Alastor says "It's time I remind everyone why I am here" — and transforms to defend the hotel. His true motivations remain unclear, but perhaps he was following Rosie's instructions. Protect Charlie.

And Now?

Adam is dead. And with his death, Lilith was released.

Through Season 2, she could only watch — anxiously — as Charlie fought, and ultimately found her victory and hope. But perhaps those are precisely what unsettle her.

Charlie is no longer someone to be protected. She is becoming something even her protector cannot contain.

And so Lilith moves.

To pulle her back and scold her: "don't do this" — not with the gentle "good girl" Charlie might hope for.

Is Lilith coming to Hell to calm Charlie down — afraid of how far her daughter has already flown? Or has she already given up on Lucifer's Hell — and come to bring Charlie home to Heaven?

Lucifer has found hope in his daughter's future — as he sang in the Season 1 finale. But Lilith has not witnessed Charlie's growth up close. That gap — the difference in what each parent has seen and felt — is what excites me most about what's to come.

In recent official merchandise, there is no ring on Lucifer's finger. A small detail — but in a show where every detail is intentional, it may be a quiet signal. Father and daughter on one side, Lilith on the other — and from that divide, something tragic may follow.

In Japan, the plushie sold out fast and everyone was talking about how unexpectedly cute it looked. But I couldn't find anyone actually analyzing why this particular costume choice is so funny and so fitting. So I did the research myself.

On "Sister Alastor"

In Hell's Greatest Dad, Lucifer and Alastor are engaged in a battle of status fought entirely through Charlie — but there's a layer to it that I think gets lost in translation. Understanding it makes the whole thing land so much harder.

First, a quick primer. Everything I'm about to say applies to Catholic Christianity specifically.

Sister -> A woman who has taken religious vows. Think of her like a shrine maiden - devoted, recognizable by her habit, present in the community. The term "Sister" is still used today, but it's a broader category.

Nun -> A woman who belongs to a monastery and has taken lifetime vows of total dedication to God. "Like a nun" sounds like it just means pious - but the closer image is a female ascetic who has renounced the world entirely and thrown herself into devotion with absolute focus. Think less "gentle holy woman" and more "someone who has locked the door behind her and thrown away the key."

With that in mind, let's go back to Hell's Greatest Dad.

The surface read is something like: "I've been serving you, I've been providing my labor - "

But what Alastor is actually saying is closer to:

"I have given everything for Your Highness, Charlie, and this Hotel - I have been locked away like a Nun, stripped of my freedom, devoting myself entirely to this mission - "

In other words: Alastor is not framing himself as an employee. He is framing the Hotel as his monastery — a place of ordained duty, a place where he, of all people, has bent his own will to serve. The face he makes is the face of someone who finds that fact both outrageous and worth weaponizing.

The word "Nun" carries far more weight than most Japanese fans might realize. A Nun, in the strict Catholic sense, cuts off contact with the outside world entirely. She lives and dies within the walls of her convent, giving everything to God. It's a concept that might sound like pure fantasy to those of us living today.

Convents were structurally divided: male quarters / female quarters (Nuns here) / areas for lay visitors. Men and women were separated by walls to eliminate distraction and preserve spiritual focus. In the medieval period, only the heads of each community — the Abbot and the Abbess — could speak with one another directly. What did the Nuns do all day? Cooking, prayer, and more prayer, presumably.

This strict enclosure wasn't loosened until the 1960s, when the Second Vatican Council allowed Nuns to engage in outside activities — becoming, in a sense, Sisters. But Alastor was active during the 1920s–30, For him, "Nun" meant exactly what it meant historically: total enclosure, total sacrifice, no exit. That context makes his lyric not a random taunt but a very precise, very bitter metaphor.

And here's the bonus layer that makes this whole thing even better.

The 1920s were Prohibition. And monasteries? They were exempt. Alcohol for religious purposes was permitted — officially for Mass, officially for the faithful. But in practice, suppliers were placing suspiciously large "religious use" orders, and monasteries were... not asking too many questions. Nun-crafted wine and beer quite possibly made its way into the hands of the very sinners Alastor would later encounter.

When you put all of this together — the enclosure, the vows, the lost freedom, the Prohibition-era irony — the Sister Alastor costume stops being a fun gender-swap joke and becomes something much more specific. It's Alastor telling you exactly how he feels about his situation, in language drawn from his own time and place.

A quick summary:

The roots start in 1910s New Orleans — a city where cultures from Africa, France, Spain, and the Caribbean all collided and created something entirely new. That chaos became jazz. Vaudeville entertainers like Frank Crumit were performing around the same era, and radio was just beginning to carry these sounds across the country.

By the 1920s, New Orleans jazz was at its peak. King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band — featuring a young Louis Armstrong — defined the sound. (You might also know this era by the name "Dixieland," though Black musicians generally preferred "New Orleans jazz" for reasons that are... historically loaded.)

Then came the early 1930s: Big Band. The small improvising ensembles gave way to orchestras of 10–20 musicians playing from written arrangements. Fletcher Henderson bridged the gap, bringing New Orleans improvisational spirit into the big band format.

By 1935, swing took over completely with Benny Goodman leading the charge.

Here's what strikes me:

Alastor was born around 1893 and died in 1933 — which means his entire life mapped almost perfectly onto the rise and fall of New Orleans jazz. He grew up with ragtime, came of age with Dixieland, became a radio star as jazz was at its most vibrant... and died just as that world was ending.

The music he loved didn't outlast him by much.
