Three years has been too long.
The best overall change from the novel for me is Baek Sa Eon being characterized not as the dominant, controlling, and possessive ML that he was in the novel but a gentler, loser type of ML.
Both of them loved Hee Joo in their own way but drama Baek Sa Eon wins by a landslide.
The best thing about ep 12 is Yoo Yeon Seok's voice while the credits were rolling.
A close second is the make-out session under the blankets.
I like that they made an effort to tie all the loose threads:
(SPOILERS for those who haven't seen ep 12 yet)
1. The downfall of the main (I'm assuming) Baek family
2. Hee Joo's family seemingly closer (as they were planning to spend Christmas together, and of course that bit at their house after the wedding and In-a saying Mom and Dad)
3. Sa Eon's (now Yu Yeon's) adoptive father with his new store in the city and their rekindled relationship
4. Sang Woo and Yuri also tying the knot (we all knew this was coming so I'm happy for them)
5. Park Do Jae still working under Baek Sa Eon (now Baek Yu Yeon)
6. Hee Joo continuing to be a broadcast interpreter
7. Baek Sa Eon (now Baek Yu Yeon) as a negotiator (and he looks way hotter)
8. That mini lunch with Sang Woo, Yu Ri, Chief Kang, Hee Joo's boss and reporter friend
9. The butler getting a lighter sentence

Things they changed for the ending:
1. Baek Sa Eon (our Baek Sa Eon) was presumed dead because of an explosion during a press conference to admit he was not the real Baek Sa Eon and he really did disappear and liquidated his assets
2. Before that he divorced Hee Joo (and there was that whole dialogue of him telling Hee Joo to live her life even when he was gone which was very sweet and Hee Joo really did all of the things he said while mourning)
3. Hee Joo got many calls from that unknown number and she started to investigate so she found out about Argan on her own
4. The international number was 675 (i guess they changed it to be more romantic in the show lol)
5. Hee Joo applied to be a sign language interpreter at a humanitarian facility in Argan and was accepted
6. The rebels ransacked the area because one of the diplomates (?) was deaf and they heard there was a sign language interpreter there so of course Hee Joo was taken
7. Sa Eon was part of a rescue group to get all the hostages back
8. They reunited and decided to live in Argan where nobody would know them and they could live freely (as 406 and 675, yes Baek Sa Eon didnt change his name)
9. Argan was described like a Middle Eastern country and not a tropical one like in the show
They really edited this scene out π
We got the happy ending we deserve π―
They changed a lot of things but it seems they're keeping the ending somewhat similar.
They changed the number.

The mom saying the psychopath son takes after her husband when both she and the culprit both blame our Sa Eon for things he didn't even do and had no control of.
I thought Hee Joo was going to lipread π because why include the shot of the culprit from her POV in that scene lol
Shim Kyu Jin giving a whole new meaning to monster-in-law
Not the WHAT IF scenarios starting and ending episode 11 π
So he DID understand this one gesture during that lunch.
More than jealousy, I think his expression here is of regret that, aside from him not learning sign language, he never asked if she was okay.
Just like nobody ever asked him. So he knew how it felt.
And here was a stranger who can easily do so casually in sign language.

In that situation, instead of their first kiss, Hee Joo was reminded of Baek Sa Eon's confession.
This tiny detail says so much about how much his words mean to Hong Hee Joo. She asked about his true feelings and he responded truthfully albeit drunk.
And that was enough for her.
The saddest point in life is when you learn to hate the things you used to love.
And Hee Joo has been living like this for more than 20 years.
