PALAEMON LORE INTRO βΌοΈβΌοΈπβ¨

Palaemon comes from Under Junon in the fishing town; he's born to a fisherwoman, and an ex-SOLDIER who left shinra some few years prior. After his father's death due to the degradation (he is one of the first to receive S-cell treatments) Palaemon grows up doing his best to aid the people of the town. When he's a little older, he takes his father's sword and manages to enlist as a 2nd Class SOLDIER and operates a lot in Junon City.
The events of Crisis Core spur Palaemon forward into continuing his research into the degradation. This sees him moving to Midgar for a little while, befriending another disgruntled soon-to-retire SOLDIER member Broden, and even getting cooked in Hojo's lab for a little while!!! (SOLDIERs don't... they don't have kids. they shouldn't. why . how is he) Palaemon deserts Shinra four years before the events of FF7, and he ends up working as an innkeeper at Kalm alongside Broden. When Broden is eventually hit with the degradation, Palaemon becomes all the more desperate to find a cure for it; he frequents a lot of places that see a lot mako-poisoned folk, and robed men as well; he becomes friends with a lot of them (but it isn't as if they can talk with him..)
When a certain party shows up at the Kalm inn, however, Pal is more than happy to guide and accompany them alongside the rest of their journey to find Sephiroth...

Pal is a NPC in the context of FF7 whose purpose is to help the player explore the degradation and the world's magic/the Lifestream. His combat is heavily geared towards magic and materia use, specifically elemental (water) and healing. sure he has a sword but he only uses it for crowd control; he's really good at AoE attacks and distributing buffs/debuffs. in a party, the three characters Pal would probably be best grouped with is
Cloud (Pal provides a lot of AoE support)
Aerith (He can convert magic damage into physical damage)

I know you and I love Aerith with ALL our hearts, and this love is lwk why Palaemon is the guy he is; he bridges the gap between the Lifestream and FF7's focus on water being a healing power throughout the games (coincidentally, water and ice magicks are VERY rare in ff7 lore and gameplay....) in fact, a very specific scene in Advent Children is the reason behind his conception.. wink wink
he genuinely is a very nice guy who wants to help people as best as he can, but the fact that the people of Under Junon have a defeatist attitude towards life/shinra means he sort of comes off as self-centred, a know-it-all, maybe even rude and snarky. but he genuinely is filled with so much love he'd literally kill himself if he can't figure out how to heal the world of all it's suffering (he grew up being the dependable person in junon, a town which is known to have an ageing population and lives in the aftermath of the junon war and the forceful construction of a mako reactor in its waters...he's always ever had to help others. he wouldn't want it any other way, though)

in Advent Children, Pal is the go-to character to help with the Geostigma crisis. In post-canon lore, so everything that comes after AC, Dirge of Cerberus.... yeah it's all very loaded things, and it deals a lot with Palaemon reflecting and unlearning his saviour complex. boy put down your sword and take a fucking vacation
