Justice is Blind

Matt smiled while Bobbi teased him. “I know. I’m losing my edge already. Or it could be that I’ve never been here. Should I be worried that you’ve blindfolded me and driven me out into the wilderness? You know that I’m one of those terrible lawyers that isn’t filthy rich, right?”

Matt’s hand trailed along her arms and his fingers rested over hers. He gently squeezed her hands, enjoying all of this. He rested his head against hers and waited patiently.

“Yes. Very ready. I’m too used to the world looking this way.”

“Damn.  That spoils all my plans.”  Smiling, Bobbi eased her hands out from under Matt’s and reached up to untie the blindfold.  “You know,” she continued as she worked out the knot.  “Since you were such a good boy, and so very cooperative, I think you deserve a treat.  With that in mind, I’ve decided you may use this blindfold on me tonight, in any way you see fit.”

The sight of the mountains was enough to distract him completely. There were no sights like this in New York. He was momentarily breathless as he looked at the landscape. All he could do was smile and he gave a laugh of delight as he tried to take in every detail. “This is amazing, Bobbi,” he told her, unable to look away for a moment.

“So don’t be sweet on the outside and mushy and sour on the inside,” Matt nodded, trying to be serious. “Wait, you tell me that that’s exactly how I am all the time. Damn, I’m a chocolate covered strawberry. I even have the right hair color,” he realized, kissing her as he did so.

He kissed her sneaky kisses and smiled as he did so. “Well, lucky me, I am immune to how they look,” he told her. He did enjoy how they felt, but not so much so that he preferred them. “Ouch. I didn’t think anything would be bad enough to deserve that comparison,” he told her, slightly impressed. He snuggled down beside her and kissed her again.

Her eyes were staying closed longer and longer between kisses, and the time elapsed between said kisses was getting shorter and shorter.  “Shhh, lawyer-man,” Bobbi mumbled, and interrupted herself with her lips on Matt’s.  “You talk too much.”

Another interruption, longer.  Her hand slipped over his neck.

Daredevil kissed Mockingbird and grinned as she stepped closer. He brought his free hand to her waist and grinned, not wanting to break the kiss for a long moment.

“Hmm, we have criminals to fight, but I’d be more than happy to continue this,” he paused, letting her put whatever label on it she would like, “later.” 

He stepped back from her, his fingers gliding down her arms. He finally broke contact with her a moment before he stepped backwards off the roof. He twisted in the air and used his billy club cable to swing over to his spot. 

This.  She hadn’t actually bothered to clarify what this was.  They fought crime, they made-out, they frightened pigeons.  It was good.  (Especially the kissing.)  Just what she needed.  And what she didn’t need was to label a relationship with a guy whose given name she didn’t even know.

Matt watched Bobbi watch him for a long moment. At her questions, he gave a small laugh and looked down at the floor. “I remember now. It hasn’t really been an etiquette rule I’ve had to consider in a long time,” he looked back over at her, still smiling. “You’ll have to help me remember all of those new rules.”

Matt felt his heart speed up and his grip on Bobbi’s hand tightened to match as they reached the door. What did the city look like now? How much had it changed? He knew that some things were the same, but was it still as bright as he remembered, even at night?

When they got to the door, he pushed it open and walked outside into the sunlight. What caught his attention wasn’t the buildings, but the sky. The sky was beautiful and he forgot to breathe for a moment as he stared at it in wonder. 

“It was overcast,” he whispered to her.

“Nah, you’re on your own.”  Bobbi stayed close to Matt as he stepped outside, releasing his hand only to fish in her bag for her sunglasses as the brightness assailed her eyes.  Pausing, she followed his gaze upwards.  It was familiar, now, but she would never quite get used to that skyline.  She stifled a sigh and donned her sunglasses.

At the sound of Matt’s voice, she tore her attention from the imaginary beaches in her head and returned it to him.  “Who was what?”

He stared up at the sky for a long silent moment after Bobbi asked her question. He could sense so much with the rest of his abilities. He could feel the air and the path it took around him. He could hear the hinge of her sunglasses as she opened them. He could taste the pretzels the street vendor was selling close by.

Nothing could get him close to the sky. 

Daredevil was relieved that the woman grabbed hold of him instead of pushed away from him. He planned the angle just right and they were heading towards safety.

He settled both of them on a nearby rooftop. His cable retracted back into his billy club and he made sure the woman was stable before he stepped back from her. He was still ready to catch her in case she started to fall. “Are you alright?” he asked the woman.

Jo staggered back, away from the man, and managed a few gasps of fresh air.  She spread her hands for balance as the world tilted, then collapsed carefully to sit on the rooftop and rest her head on her knees.

“Ohgod,” she moaned faintly.  She continued working with her breath, in - out - focus, until she felt steady enough to look up again.

“I’ve got you!” Daredevil told the woman as he swung from his cable and grabbed her out of the air.

“Hold on tight,” he told her. To get her somewhere safe, they were going to have to take a corner and he didn’t want her to panic in his arms. If his grip slipped, both of them could be in trouble.

The force of the collision knocked the remaining breath out of her, and Jo’s screech derailed abruptly into a confused squawk.  How - ?!  Her limbs scrambled briefly before instinct kicked in, and she clung with every bit of strength to the man who had appeared from apparently nowhere.

The man in red leathers nodded. “I would prefer to leave by the front door, but I’m afraid that would cause much more of a commotion than I am worth, so yes,” he told her, crossing to the window. 

He let out a small chuckle at her suggestion. “Should I find myself in your room again, it will be only by invitation, but I will remember to try knocking next time,” he agreed. ”I wouldn’t want to cause you troubles by bleeding all over your room.” 

“Yes, you’re the politest masked vigilante in all the land,” Bobbi retorted dryly.  “When injustice and poor manners rear their heads, there you may be found.  Now, get out.”

She fought another smile as she watched the man in red.  She found herself liking him, and resented it tremendously.  Whether it was in spite of his idealism and slight tendency toward the ridiculous, or because of it, she could not quite say.  Better not to dwell on it, better to pretend it doesn’t exist.

He had to get back to his belongings before they were discovered and he would have to find some other place to sleep tonight. She was already suspicious of him, so he would need to avoid that tavern as much as possible. 

Matt took Bobbi’s hand and walked with her. “I will never doubt your abilities,” he promised. Even though it was a rather blank hospital, he was still trying to take in every detail of everything he saw: the scuff marks on the tile, the smudges on the windows, the old furniture. Nothing seemed insignificant and he wanted to remember all of it. 

He turned back to Bobbi after a long moment and grinned. Bobbi. His Bobbi. How as that his Bobbi? He finally understood why Foggy was jealous.

“Sorry, what?” Matt blinked a few times. “Yes, there is one outside already, I think. I told him it was going to be a few hours so he said he or one of his buddies would wait. They think I’m someone important. I can’t convince them otherwise.

Bobbi laughed.  “Glad I asked.  Goodness knows you’re nobody.”  She tipped her head to glance sidelong Matt, looking down her nose at him, hiding a smile.  “What’re you lookin’ at, huh?  Don’t you know it’s rude to stare?  And before you say no, you don’t know, that’s no excuse.  There’s new rules, now, kid.”

With a toss of her hair and a faint demeanor of superiority, she turned her gaze forward again and pulled him through the lobby.  Lord, she couldn’t stop smiling, couldn’t keep her grip from tightening on his hand.

“Of course,” Daredevil nodded solemnly, careful to keep the smile off of his face. “It isn’t lazy when it is the most efficient way to do things. Since you don’t have swingy things, I’m the clear choice,” he held his serious demeanor for a moment longer before he finally let out a small chuckle under his breath.

Daredevil pulled out his ‘swingy thing’ and got it ready. “Kiss for luck?” he asked.

Her smile remained, flickering cheerfully as he repeated her argument.  If you find a man who backs up your logic…

“Bloodthirsty,” Mockingbird growled softly.  But she stepped closer and kissed him, her hand straying instinctively to his waist.  This was his fight, after all, and she was in no rush to put business before pleasure.  With that in mind, she deepened the kiss instead of pulling away, and her free hand caught his arm.

“Hmm, we have criminals to fight, but I’d be more than happy to continue this,” he paused, letting her put whatever label on it she would like, “later.”
