What do I write?
What do I write?
Since the semester ended a couple of weeks ago I have been wondering, what should I write about on my next blog. I am not confined by the terms that were set forth (sounds official) by my professor. In short, I can write whatever the hell I want! To be faithful to the #grumpykid I will keep it family related, and promise NOT to dredge in current events unless of course they enter into our daily…

NVLD…
A lot of my attention has been on ADHD and how it has affected our family. Often ADHD is not the only factor; there are often other issues that walk together hand in hand. In our case, Non Verbal Learning Disability (NVLD) and Dysgraphia are our ADHD’s partners. NVLD is a sneaky little sucker. It can be masked and misdiagnosed as Asperger’s or even Autism spectrum disorders because it has a lot…

Smoking While Pregnant
Have you ever been minding your own business walking down the street and happen to come across a VERY pregnant woman smoking? Well, this happened to me over the weekend. I thought to myself “wow, that’s really messed up”, but me, being the most passive-aggressive person I know, didn’t bother to say anything. Looking back, this really was weighing on me. Should I have said something? Was it even my place to intervene? Does this woman know the consequences of smoking while being pregnant? Based on this uncomfortable experience, I’d like to dedicate this blog post to all of the extremely negative effects smoking has on your child while in the womb.
First, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that “smoking during pregnancy can cause tissue damage in the unborn baby, particularly in the lung and brain.” If that isn’t convincing enough to quit smoking while pregnant, the CDC also reports that due to the high levels of carbon monoxide you’re breathing in, the baby is not getting nearly enough oxygen, which can lead to miscarriage. Lastly, the CDC reports that every one in five babies born from mothers who smoke will have a low birthweight and are more prone to die of sudden infant death syndrome.
I know addiction is hard and that smoking can be extremely difficult to quit, but I urge all mothers to quit for not only their sake, but for their child’s health.

I love my son to the moon and back, but some days, I just want to look him straight in the eye and say, WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?!?
When we first started carpooling to the new school way back when, there was a little brown haired girl, “S”. She is sweet, talkative, and sometimes too smart for her own good. Little man was smitten and fell hard. Apparently in the first few encounters with the little brown haired girl, he told her he was 12 years old. He’s 10, and will be turning 11, June 19th. So, when he and I discussed the topic about birthday parties, he announced he would NOT be having a party. I was very disappointed. In the past, we have had two parties, and neither one broke any records for attendance. If there were five kids there out of the 20+ we invited, we were lucky. But I felt this year would be different! New school, lots of friends, he was going to make out like a bandit.
While talking to the little brown haired girls mom, I mentioned that Bobby does not want a party. I asked, “What freaking 10-year-old doesn’t want a party?” The little brown haired girl’s mom asked, "how old is he?" I told her ten. It was then we realized that Robert lied about his age to the brown haired girl. And again, “What 10-year-old lies about their age?”
This is symptomatic of children diagnosed with ADHD. The lying about things that seem ridiculous to you and me. I blame the poor impulse control, BUT it’s not an excuse. I did take into consideration that he did not actively think about it for days and days and then thought, “Oh I’m going to lie about my age.” I did believe when the opportunity presented itself for him to appear to be equal to the little girl he had a crush on he took the reins and CARPE DIEM!!
Unfortunately another symptom of ADHD is the inability to manage emotions, and when the truth finally did rear its ugly little head, he was devastated and had a hard time coping. We talked about it at length, and he let me know that “they are working it out.”
Thank God, I was worried…..

Private school v Public school? The struggle is real.
The biggest change in my little man’s life is his hop over to private school. To merely mention that public school was frustrating would be decreasing the biggest issue to hit our family.
I can talk for hours about Bobby and what he does and how smart he is and his differences, but a good portion of the time should be spent on his schooling. The public school that he attended is small in comparison to other schools in the area. Although people believe a small school is a good idea, it was not the best environment for Bobby to blossom. I think I touched on this subject a few weeks back, with the photo of the comment on the top of his graded paper. His teacher was not the best equipped to deal with his personality and his quirkiness (in other words, his constant talking and his indifferent attitude to school). The frustration level in 4th grade was through the roof. I cried on a weekly basis and questioned why me? I often wondered why did I have to spend hours upon hours on homework while other kids played sports and seemingly completed all their assignments. Bobby fought tooth and nail every day to complete homework, now in hindsight I understand why. The work was arduous. Just to write 3 sentences was painstakingly challenging.
Then someone mentioned The Hillside School. (hillsideschool.org) I have never heard of it and took to the Internet once again to fill my already full brain with more information. The school is a private school located in Lower Macungie Township and is a school for kids with language-based learning disabilities. I contacted them and arranged a tour. It is a very modest one-floor building. The halls were designed with children with sensory processing disorders in mind. The teacher to student ratio is 1:8. Which was very different to Bobby’s class, which was 1:28. I was very excited to start this new adventure! Then the sticker shock hit, $21,000 a YEAR?!? HOLY SHIT! This tuition was more than my car was worth and more than the state university my daughter was looking to attend.
Wow, what a difference to the “free” education I was receiving, and then remembered you get what you pay for. I thought about it, wrote about 3,000 “pros and cons” lists, asked advice from very close friends, talked extensively about it with my husband, which always ended with him saying, “were not paying for private school.”
That was last year; I’m happy to report that we are starting the 7th month at Hillside, and really? It is all that it promises and more. We were eligible for financial aid, which helped more than they will ever know. The homework situation is exponentially better, and he initiates and completes it all on his own. The biggest plus is that we are no longer subjected to the dreaded common core curriculum, or PSSA’s.
If anyone out there is reading this and has a child who is severely struggling in school, please do yourself a favor and contact Karen Mitton at The Hillside School, (610) 967-3701 ext. 308.
I have (unfortunately) not been compensated in any way by the Hillside School for my opinions.
