I survived my fifth semester of art school; barely.

I bit off more than I could chew this fall, taking four intense classes and working full time, plus trying to maintain some semblance of a social life. Little did I know that three out of the four classes I took would be more challenging than anything else I’ve taken on so far. Keeping my head above water has been a constant struggle.

Last night, I got home from turning in my Visual Communications final (the last one of the semester) and I started bawling. Not from relief, which I expected, but because although my work this semester has been good, it hasn’t been AS good as some of my classmates. I know I shouldn’t compare myself to them, but that’s nearly impossible and honestly, everyone in art school is constantly seeing how they measure up to their peers.

Then my mom called and when I told her how I was feeling, she started laughing. She reminded me that through my entire educational career, up until I started art school, I did everything last minute, put hardly any effort into things, and didn’t give a flying fuck about whether or not I turned in quality work. Now I’m emotionally assaulting myself for the work that I am putting literally every spare moment and bit of energy into.. Just because someone else might have done better. Not because I didn’t try. I am absolutely trying my hardest. So what’s the point of crying over work that I should be proud of?
