Ever since this belt came into my hands, it’s brought me new stimulation, new thrills, and attracted all kinds of stimulating opponents to me. Every time it does, the belt shines. And I’ve made it shine pretty brightly already. But now I want its light to shine a little more… just a little bit more! So while the belt’s usually brought it to me before, this time I’ve gone to seek it out myself. Go after the light myself. And that light is Tanahashi Hiroshi. With him, this belt... hmm, what would it be? It would be complete, wouldn’t it? In the spirit of creating and raising the value of this belt, I’ve turned it from a dull, dirty ten-yen coin into something brighter. Something new. So within that, within the course of that, for me to make it shine just that little bit more, it can only be this. Nakamura vs Tanahashi.

When I heard the name Tanahashi come out of Nakamura’s mouth in Osaka, I was really taken back. At the same time however, I honestly felt a little happy as well. While I’d like to explain this as carefully as possible... There are probably many recent New Japan fans here who may not be familiar with the decade or so of history that’s gone on between Tanahashi and Nakamura, but... Mm. Well... We’re seen as each other’s rivals, wrestling and competing with each other from that position. In the midst of that however, for the past few years I’ve been the IWGP champion for a long period of time, while Nakamura has been the Intercontinental champion, a championship which by now is already soaked in his colour. It’s turned into a separated situation where Tanahashi is in the main event while Nakamura is in the semi-main event. Now this is just personal speculation, but my belief was: “He doesn’t put me in his sights. He doesn’t care about me at all.” It was while I was in the midst of this belief... that Nakamura called my name. This is something I am still struggling to digest.
