Fanfiction literally cannot "normalize" anything. Fanfiction is a weird little niche and fics are not something with massive cultural impact.
Reposting this because it's dumb. You can say fanfiction has no reach culturally, sure. But were you ever on FIMfiction when you were younger? That site is just filled with debauchery that nearly ruined me as a kid. It can and will normalize things for individuals and in communities. All media has its effects on people and to nullify that because fanfiction is a "weird little niche" comes off as pretty ignorant.

You sought out and read fanfiction that you were interested in.
That's still not "normalizing" anything on a cultural level, even if reading fanfiction that you were interested in (that you later felt weird about) affected you personally.
First off, thank you for proving you didn't bother to read what I said! I never said it affected the culture, that was not my point at all. I was using it as an example of how it was normalized on the site and subsequently the fandom. Also, "seeking out fanfiction you were interested in"? Understatement of the fucking CENTURY. I should not have been exposed to that as a child, and there's no way you can prove that *I* was somehow the only kid with a "weird" hobby. This is how grooming happens, you know?
Ok but the idea of normalization stems not from how it can impact ONE person, but MORE THAN ONE.
Just because you found a fic that was weird once did not make you think the worst of things is actually not bad--proof of THAT much is in you arguing about the possibility when the reality is:

But the audience for said fanfics of that nature? ARE NOT MEANT FOR CHILDREN IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Your problem stems less from fanfic and more from neglect. I get that it's a damn shame but THAT is the fault of your parents.
Not you, who should have been ushered to the Gen rating for fics ONLY.
Not the fanfic writers, they had a story to tell and share with other ADULTS.
But your parents yes are to blame. And if you want one more target? Try advertisers. For the constant scrub down of Adult Only Internet Spaces and turning what used to be GREAT places for kids into ad space.

Yes because adults are allowed to post things for other adults.
It's not my problem or my fault if someone doesn't monitor their kid and they look at my adult fanfiction, any more than it's my problem or my fault if some kid picks up a adult DVD in the store.
Since online spaces are basically just a public mall that happens to be on a screen you keep in your house, let's re-word that statement accordingly real quick :)

This is what you sound like right now. Yes, when a child is in a public space, it is on their parents or guardians to monitor what they're doing. That is literally what parenting is. This is not rocket science.

Her collectible accessory of choice is hats right now. Roy is delighted for her. He would be much more delighted if he didn’t know so much about every single hat that has ever been set upon her angelic little teenaged head and made her even cuter somehow, which her daddy didn’t even think was possible, but apparently the universe is full of wonders, and her cuteness tops the list, and she coordinates them with her braces, and etcetera and so on.

Ed’s car is still parked on the far side of Roy’s extremely expansive driveway, right where he left it. Roy had tried to convince him to put it in the gigantic airplane hangar of a garage before they went to the party last night, and Ed had asked him what he thought the odds were of someone in this neighborhood doing anything more damaging to his car than screaming in horror as they passed by, and Roy had said “Well, I’ll steal it if no one else will. I don’t want it to feel left out.”
In retrospect, it is increasingly obvious that they were painfully obsessed with each other this entire time. Winry is going to have a goddamn field day if she lets Ed live.
