hello riv id like to ask for a second opinion in something i bumped into just now 🧐...others who see this ask are also free to share their opinions.
i was reading this vi x reader insert fanfic on a site i wont mention bc fuck i dont want the author to have a chance to see this and maybe think im an asshole and block me... alternative college au, american football player vi, cheer caitlyn—bumpy relationship, caitlyn is written more as a passive agressive popular girl(totally fine, nothing wrong with a more prissy caitlyn despite it being a bit ooc lol) and all the works. i was having some mild enjoyement until the author decided to make Caitlyn cheat on Vi with a man....I'm really not bothered by the cheating part, who doesn't like some drama? It adds something to the narrative!!! But really, I felt deeply disappointed to see that an author would portray a character who is so proudly a lesbian as someone who would be with and kiss a man. i finish the chapter very unsettled and decide to comment that making a canon lesbian have an affair with a man even in a alternative universe was debatable, and the answer i got was that "the appeal of aus is explore non-canon situations, whether or not reader enjoys them"....am i just the friend thats too woke for thinking this was such a weird choice and very much still debatable despite author saying not all choices are inherently debatable? is it just me who had that "oh that's not..." feeling because god i love caitlyns character so much, flaws or not, and it felt slightly disrespectful even if its not a canon au? it feels like erasure, i apologized to the author if i sounded rude because they did say my comment could discourage someone, but wasn't a choice like that so clearly going to evoke reactions? (for some reason i was the only person in the comment section to say that though, i dont know if the fic is not popular enough or if im just TWEAKING)
— suspiria anon...i will come back with better subjects next time 😭
to be quite honest i’m with you 😭 i think there is a mayor difference between making an straight character gay/bisexual and then making a lesbian straight cause we are talking about… representation of a minority thats not usually portrayed…. and you are erasing that??? ???… i don’t feel it’s woke… at all?
i also feel like the author saying that your comment may “discourage someone” is bullshit cause she, like she previously stated— want to explore non-canon even when it can be unpleasent to the reader, so you have to expect to have critics whether its positive or not specially in changing someone’s sexuality so drastically, that’s what you are searching for??? comments and feedback aidonouuuu
IDK IF IM DRAMATIC LMOFJEJWODOSP BUT im not changing any lgbtq+ sexuallity ever BYE
