I'm just going to go out on a limb and say that "Friend of the Devil" is Jerry Garcia & Robert Hunter's interpretation of this Irish folk song within the context of the American Wild West... hence American Beauty. Oh, yeah... and Sweet Anna is the real reason that the sheriff's on his tail...

Ian McNulty / The Empanada Intifada food truck in action.
Fans of local food trucks have grown adept at using social media to track their roaming ways for a quick lunch or a late-night snack. Next week, however, it will be easy for anyone to find a cluster of food trucks and other...

Just when you're pretty confident that 99.999% of mashups are garbage, you hear this and realize that it's only 99.998% Big ups to @daftbeatles for not tilting the scale the other way... Oh, and just in case you might be wondering how to perceive this phenomenal anomaly: Philip Glass is a 75 year-old Aquarius, Blondie is a 67 year-old Cancer, and PAT BENATAR is a 59 year-old Capricorn
“Miles would have done this in ’95,” says pianist Robert Glasper of his current album, the crossover smash, Black Radio. Much like the late, brazen jazz icon, Glasper’s own visionary compositions challenge contemporary notions of genre and connect with fans far removed from jazz’s preordained establishment. The album, its title a reference to the fail-safe [...]

On this day in music history: June 6, 1964 - “Chapel Of Love” by The Dixie Cups hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 3 weeks. Written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, and Phil Spector, it is the biggest hit for the New Orleans based vocal trio. The song is originally intended for The Ronettes, but producers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller along with co-writers Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich cut it on The Dixie Cups over Spector’s objections. Issued as the first release on Leiber and Stoller’s newly formed Red Bird Records, the song is an instant smash. The single will enter the Billboard Hot 100 at #72 on May 2, 1964, taking only six weeks to reach #1. The success of the record is significant since The Dixie Cups are part of a small group of American artists to top the pop charts during the first wave of the British Invasion when the US charts are dominated by UK artists. “Chapel Of Love” will covered numerous times over the years, with the original version also being featured in many films and television shows.

When This Party’s Over, It Will Start Again
Talking Heads on the Sunset Strip! A friend has a review copy of Jonathan Lethem’s forthcoming Fear of Music 33 1/3 book and asked me for a live set from the FoM era. This is one of the best I’ve heard — a pristine (slightly keyboard-heavy) soundboard recording of the band on their final tour as a four-piece in 1979. They were playing the long-gone, but quite wonderful-sounding Stardust Ballroom in Los Angeles — a former roller-skating rink, if I recall correctly. A few miles away, I was a nine-month old infant. You want this — it captures one of the greatest bands of all time at one of their many peaks as a live act! Heaven! Not enough? Here’s an hour-long Talking Heads live video from a few weeks before the Stardust show. Still not enough? Here’s a 1977 show at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco, and a 1976 CBGBs set (along with two Television sets from the same night). Stay hungry!

Hear Neil Young Debut 5 New Songs Live
twentyfourbit:
As any longtime Neil Young worshiper could tell you, a Shakey tour isn’t always a “greatest hits” event, and his latest, a 13-city jaunt with Bert Jansch dubbed Twisted Road, is no different. Sure, Young has been adorning his sets with “Cinnamon Girl,” “Down by the River,” “Ohio,” “Helpless,” “Cortez the Killer,” and other choice tunes from his epic oeuvre, but amid “After the Goldrush” and co. are a handful of songs never before heard.
Rough footage of Young playing new tune “Walk With Me” (complete with awkward guitar tune-up) hit the Web after opening night, but we’ve been patiently waiting for higher quality previews to reach our ears… until now. Clips from Monday’s gig in Washington, D.C. in which Young unveils solo acoustic versions of new songs “Peaceful Valley,” “Love and War,” “Sign of Love” (electric in CT), “Leia,” and “You Never Call” were posted a few days back, and — while I can’t put my full stamp of approval on the video quality — the audio captured is quite good. Are these new songs from Young’s forthcoming Daniel Lanois-produced record? Perhaps, but only one thing is known for certain at this stage: Neil Young is still writing amazing Neil Young songs. Watch/listen below:
