August 2 - International Roma and Sinti Genocide Remembrance Day

This date, August 2, is devoted to the Roma Genocide or Porajmos (“the Devouring”), which took place during World War II as a result of the racial purification efforts by Nazi Germany and its Axis Powers allies.

In November of 1935, the Nazi German government amended its Nuremburg Laws, which codified its agenda for racial purity, to officially include the Sinti and Roma community among those labeled as “racially inferior.”

For Palestinian shepherds in the Jordan Valley and Masafer Yatta — a cluster of villages in Palestine’s occupied West Bank — Israeli flags marking expanding illegal settlements and outposts have become inescapable features of the landscape.

As illegal settlers steadily take over Palestinian land and isolate communities that have lived there for generations, some Palestinian families have sold their flocks or stopped using areas they usually use for grazing, while many have altered their daily routines.

My story and hope for survival😭

I am Israa Alwan I am 23 years old, a young woman who once had big dreams and was ready to achieve them. After years of hard work and study, I finally received my degree in Early Childhood Education. It was an indescribable joy, knowing I was about to start my journey as a teacher, to help shape young minds and walk alongside them in their first steps toward knowledge.🥺🧑🏻‍🎓🧑🏻‍💻

But my dream didn’t last. The war came and turned 🇵🇸my life upside down. My home, once a safe haven, is now rubble, and I’m left with only a few belongings and broken dreams. Now, I have no home, no job, and no sense of security. I move from one place to another with my husband, carrying my unborn child, searching for shelter to protect us from the cold winter and the scorching summer.😭😭🍉

I would like to share a part of my life with you…🥺🌠

I am Esraa 🤍 I married the man I love, and he is my support and strength in this difficult world. Now I am pregnant with our little baby, and we dream of the day we hold our child in our arms, filling our lives with love and hope.

But the reality around us is very hard 💔

We are living in a worn-out tent that cannot protect us from the cold or the rain. Every day, I worry about my baby growing inside me and how I can keep him safe in these conditions.

During this sensitive time, I truly need proper care, healthy food, clean water, and vitamins to protect my baby and myself 🤰💧💊
