I guess I’m trying to leave my traces for the inevitable void to chomp it down one day when Mother Earth is too frail to coddle her sapping offspring inside her crumbling cradle. “You probably know this… but devils don’t die in the truest sense.” Angel broke the silence first. His gaze turned sharp and lucid. Aki didn’t follow. What brought this on? “Even if they die and turn to ash… as long as people fear their name, they’ll come back to life in another form.” Angel continued, “Only, they don’t revive in this world. They come back in hell.” Their eyes locked, magnetic in a way. Aki absorbed more from the calm depth than from any of those words. “And then, I don’t know if this is true or false, devils who die in hell apparently come to this world. Devils have an endless cycle of death and rebirth.” Aki started to see where this conversation was going. “You don’t know? But you’re a devil. You don’t remember hell?” “Do you remember your mother’s womb?” The words were spoken with a quiet conviction. It took Aki a second too long to register. “So… what are you getting at?” He asked. The devil’s gaze darkened. Pale red irises dimmed into wine. He took his sweet time. Letting the tension simmer close to the boiling point. Aki was on the edge of his seat, waiting for Angel to continue. “Don’t share the information I’m about to tell you with anyone.” Warned the devil. Aki kept his silence despite how conspiratorially it sounded. He’d take whatever information he could garner to further his revenge.

Graaah!!! Aki’s roar broke him out of his dying thought. His halo pulsed brighter. Did he… did he just touch him? A clammy hand tightened around his wrist. Aki pulled with every fiber of his being, putting his life on the line. Quite literally. He bellowed in desperation as the clock kept ticking. Each second brought more lifespan to siphon. Angel’s jaw dropped. His throat was raw with unspeakable emotions stuck like fish bones. His eyes must be playing tricks on him. Yet, the undeniable surge of lifespan swirling in his halo told him otherwise. A thousand thoughts raced through his mind as Aki pulled him into a hug. His back flushed against Aki’s chest, arms circling around Angel securely. Bracing through the whirlwind. “Why did you touch my hand?! Do you want to die?!” Angel eventually found his voice. The first thing he did was to scold the fool. He looked over his shoulder, glaring and furrowing his brows in anger. “Hell no! I don’t wanna die!” Aki’s voice was breaking as he shouted back. Purple eyes full of anguish. “Tell me… how much time did I lose?” He whispered, lament in his voice.

Boom! Boom! Boom! The rhythm of destruction followed, shattering the night sky and carving a path along the Tama River. Its surface rippled with each blast, reflecting the plethora of colors exploding overhead. Hard to miss them when the sky was breaking open. It might have looked like a spectacular fireworks show to the innocent populace, with summer festivals in full swing. They wouldn’t have known better. Aki’s grip on the steering wheel tightened as he took their first turn, moving between wards. From observing their path, he expected the two hybrids would end up rampaging through Chiyoda if he didn’t stop them.

Since he got paired up, Angel had been noticeably more drained. Today marked their seventh day. Another devil had been defeated. It was well past their working hours, yet he was still outside because they had gotten stuck in the rain. Seeking shelter under the awning of a round-the-clock diner. “Have you ever heard of the city mouse and the country mouse?” They stood side by side as cars went about their evening. His head hung low. Distant gaze fixed on the wet pavement, staring at the rivulets of water running toward the gutter. “It’s one of Aesop’s fables.” A pause, letting his partner stop him if he’d like. The human made no sound. So, he continued.

I have posted the continuation of my previous akiten fic. This is the first chapter, starting from their first meeting. Going forward, expect some more canon-divergence events. I tried to stick to the timeline and add the bts sort of events for the two. Give it a try <3 ᯓ➤ Ao3 link here

“Get up.” The bench creaked under his foot as he planted it beside the devil’s knee, avoiding his wing. “Otherwise, I’ll have to tell leadership you’re useless. As a devil, they’ll slaughter you.” Leaning down, he propped his forearm on his thigh. His voice lowered to a gravelly whisper. Hopefully, the threat would work if pleading failed. “Is that what you want?” He pressed, holding the gaze of the man below him. Those ruby eyes stared unblinking, devoid of any emotion he could decipher. Except for the profound apathy that was ever present. The Angel Devil lowered his gaze and looked to the side, throwing the empty cone toward the trash can. It landed in the bin with a soft thud. “I’d rather die than work.” That was his reply to Aki’s threat. Short and lacking any inflection. As if he didn’t need to think long to reply. One of his arms rested on the backrest, wings tucked and draped over the bench. The Angel Devil looked at him impassively and tilted his head. The luminescent halo followed. Red wispy hair swayed with his slight movement, the very picture of indolence. Aki wanted to throttle him for the callous remark. But the sight beneath him was so effortlessly endearing. It was unfair.

This is the last chapter for the prequel to my Akiten fanfic. It'll be a slow burn. I've written around 10 chapters in, and the smut just started. Anyway, see you soon <3

‘Easy revenge!’ was written on its wrapper. The same one Himeno said she’d be holding onto. His eyelids closed as he sighed softly. He pocketed the stick and reached for his sword before getting up. Easier now that he understood what he had to do. One step, another, and another. Closer to the motionless devil. He felt serene. ‘The Ghost Devil has no eyes; what it sees is fear.’ Himeno told me. His mind had cleared up as he stepped onto its limbs. Climbing higher. Even higher past the flower bed of its neck. Shedding petals as he went. He perched on its nape. Left leg bent forward. Sword held with both hands in a side stance. No trace of hesitation as he raised his sword in a smooth arc to a wrath stance. A breath. He gathered his resolve as Himeno flashed through his mind. Like a reel of film, she was back. Tokyo’s sunset as the backdrop, she looked relaxed with cigarette smoke curling hazily. Himeno… Arms wide open, she looked bubbly as ever; a sharp side eye, shrewd as ever. White crosses filled a green field. She stood solemnly. Himeno bore the sun on her smile. She turned to face him, the same sunset behind her. I’ll be with you soon.

“You over there. Can I borrow a hanky?” He was busy clearing the path to an exit when a soft voice called from behind him. It sounded so out of place that Aki could not help but turn. He was met with a vision. A beautiful being he was, with a pair of wings so white, they appeared luminous in the dark. The halo atop his head was even brighter. A mockery of the divine. Aki had to swallow hard at how parched his throat suddenly felt. He didn’t even taste the lingering sweet decay from the zombies. The sight before him was sweeter. He knew what this was. Who this was. Captain Kishibe’s words rang inside his head. “No hostility towards humans, but I recommend you keep your distance. Touch this one, and you lose years of your life span.”

“These are letters my sister sent me. I’m passing them to you because I think you should read them.” Her speech mannerism was softer than Himeno’s. He opened the first one, and it broke the floodgate to all the unsaid things between them. Unsaid things Himeno failed to tell him. Unsaid things Aki failed to notice. Did he even know who Himeno truly is… beyond the carefree, dependable devil hunter he looked up to? “Is Dad feeling any better?” It was so… simple and casual, a thing she could text instead of writing in a letter. “The job pays pretty well, so don’t worry about sending food or anything. Dad’s been messaging me lately. I appreciate his concern, but I’m more worried about him. Is he taking his meds?” Aki had no idea Himeno’s dad was sick. All this time, he did not know. Did not ask. She was someone’s daughter, and Aki forgot that because his family did not live long enough for him to appreciate the gift.

His throat constricted, mouth bitter and ashen. His hand hovered over the fallen stick before crushing it with his own fingers. Breathing hard. Clutching his head as it shook. That he lost Himeno for good. Heaven knew he could not stop it when fat drops of tears rolled down his cheeks. He did not want to. It was visceral. Primal. Something pulled from deep within his guts as he sobbed and heaved. So, he let himself cry. Aki let himself cry and moan and whimper. He let himself feel pathetic. He let himself be weak. He let himself mourn.

Aki tilted his head just enough to steal another glance, unable to help himself. If he had to find the word to describe Angel, it would be devastatingly ethereal. Not in the way cherubs captivated you by rolling around in the Garden of Eden. No. He was Lucifer in Cabanel’s vision. Beautiful in the way fallen things were. Like the way lights clung to ripped feathers, ever so radiant even in ruin. Because everything about Angel was devastating.  His silky, flawless skin flushed at the slightest touch. A couple of wispy strands strayed from his lustrous auburn hair, framing his face effortlessly. Down the gentle curve of his ears. The elegant slope of his neck, nestled in the delicate bow of his collarbone. Aki’s gaze continued south, past the smooth expanse of his chest, to the subtle rows of ribs. The tender plane of his belly and the soft hollow of his navel. Lower still, the cinched waist and hips. Supple thighs. Slender legs. The soft arches of his feet… From the top of his head down to his fingertips and the soles of his feet. Devastating.

This is a prologue chapter for my akiten fanfic. There are no explicit scenes. Yet. But I put up a mature content warning for implied intimate actions. The story is meant to be guidance on what to expect further down the line. Since romance is a subplot for the main story, it is a slow burn.

I was planning to post everything under one title, but decided to upload them in different batches. Also, I might post some AU oneshots and crackfics in between. Only time will tell. ᯓ➤ Here is the Ao3 link for the oneshot prologue.
