The BS-Free Witchcraft Podcast: 67. The Headache of Misinformation
Combating misinformation has always been one of the primary missions of this show, and honestly? It just gets exhausting sometimes. Why are people in this community so willing to uncritically pass on bad information? Why canât people be bothered to do the minimum to verify what theyâre sayingâs correct? Itâs incredibly frustrating. â¤Kitchen Witchcraft-Plants and Dollsâ¤
Plants played an important role in many traditions and were used for rituals of luck, protection and achieving certain goals.Â
Ancient sorcerers and alchemists believed that if the laws of nature were respected and followed, plants would reveal all their medicinal properties to them in order to heal the body's diseases.
Marigold has long been known as a flower of protection and a flower that knows how to keep secrets. It is believed that it will neutralize unwanted influences if it is placed in a window.
Hawthorn is known for its ability to ward off evil forces and enhance material progress. But there is also a belief that says that a hawthorn tree must not be destroyed, because otherwise a curse will fall on that person's family.
Witch hazel is one of the most used in love magic. A person who cannot find a partner should carry with him one head of witch hazel. If there is a doubt that there are negative influences in the house, this grass should be sprinkled in all corners of the rooms.
Verbena is known for its ability to protect women's beauty. It is used in rituals when love is unrequited and for success in court cases.
Nettle neutralizes negative influences. It is used in rituals to encourage courage, protect the home and purify it.
Lavender belongs to one of the most popular plants for defense against evil. It is used in magical beauty baths and love spells.
Sage has many medicinal properties. It is believed that being placed under the pillow brings prophetic dreams.
Wormwood is a very powerful plant that is used a lot in magical rituals. There is a belief that a person will be protected on a trip if he carries dry wormwood leaves with them.
â¤Simple Doll Magic
There are many techniques with which we can strengthen our energy or contribute to the realization of certain intentions.Â
For this purpose, certain plants are placed in a cloth doll, which is most often made with the aim of healing, but also to attract love or financial progress.Â
These dolls were used several thousand years ago, they were made of various medicinal plants and cloth.Â
They symbolically represent a person through whose help improvement occurs.Â
Making this doll is very simple.Â
The outline of a human figure should be drawn on the material of the appropriate color, then cut, hemmed and filled with plants that have a suitable purpose.Â
For example, rosemary is used for better concentration, thyme is used to boost mood, and fresh nettle leaves are used to recover from illness.

Protection Candle to cast circles

I have been practicing witchcraft off and on for about 18 years, and in those 18 years I've discovered that I do not have the patience to cast a protective circle with elaborate chants and hand movements every time that I do a spell. So I developed this particular method, which works perfectly for me. And it might work for you as well!

You seem like you're more familiar with the broader occult community than my scholarly shut in ass. I'm curious. If there were a few lessons you wish you could drill into the head of every prominent social media occultist, what would they be?
Ohhh the number one thing I wish I could drill into the head of every aspiring occultist and magical practitioner is that CRITICAL THINKING IS YOUR FRIEND.
Study magic but keep fact-checking! If there's a claim in a book on witchcraft that should be able to be backed up by mundane sources, look for those sources. If they're not cited in the book, that's a red flag. If the sources you do find don't support the claim, that's another, bigger red flag. This is especially true with claims about history, science, medicine, psychology, anthropology, and religion.
Also, be wary of anything New Age. There's a pipeline to anti-science, eugenics, and racism there that runs directly through portions of the modern pagan and witchcraft communities and it's brightly painted with New Age buzzwords.
If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. If something seems geared to appeal to your emotions, especially that which seems formulated to make you feel special or "chosen" or to fire up some kind of righteous anger or feelings of superiority, you should immediately be suspicious of it.
If a source tells you to disregard science, modern medicine, or recorded history, or tries to tell you that some people are inherently more special or magical or deserving of power than others, discard it immediately. That is a bad source.
Don't believe everything you see or hear online. Too many witches roll their eyes at their parents and grandparents believing everything they read on Facebook, then turn around and insist that everything they've seen on TikTok or Tumblr or YouTube is Absolute Truth.
Believing in and studying magic does not mean that common sense goes out the window. You should be supplementing your magical studies with parallel practical topics (i.e. botany, geology, chemistry, mythology, etc) and ALWAYS keep one foot squarely planted on the ground.
It's entirely possible for me to enjoy and identify as a witch from a psychological perspective, focusing on the symbolism, self-awareness, and personal growth aspects rather than engaging in spells or rituals. Here are some ways I would embrace a psychology-based approach to being a witch, and I offer these to others:
Symbolism and Self-Reflection: Explore the symbolism of various magical tools, crystals, herbs, and symbols. Use these as prompts for self-reflection and introspection. For example, consider the meanings and associations of different crystals and how they relate to your own experiences and emotions.
Meditation and Visualization: Incorporate meditation and visualization practices into your witchcraft journey. Use these techniques to explore your inner world, set intentions, and develop greater self-awareness.
Art and Creativity: Engage in creative activities such as art, writing, or crafting that allow you to express your inner thoughts and emotions. Craft your own personal creations and/or artwork inspired by your psychological journey.
Psychological Self-Care: Approach witchcraft as a form of psychological self-care. Use your magical tools, crystals, or herbs as reminders to focus on self-love, self-compassion, and personal growth.
Nature Connection: If you feel a connection to nature, spend time outdoors and use it as an opportunity for grounding and psychological healing. Nature walks and mindfulness in natural settings can be highly therapeutic.
Read and Study: Continue to read and study topics related to psychology, symbolism, and personal development. This knowledge can enhance your understanding of the psychological aspects of witchcraft.
Symbolic Jewelry and Accessories: Collect and wear jewelry and accessories featuring symbols that resonate with you. These items can serve as wearable art and personal statements.
Decor and Design: Use symbols, natural curios, flowers/herbs or crystals in your decor and design to create a space that reflects your aesthetics and interests. Symbols can add depth and meaning to your environment.
Personal Reflection: Spend time reflecting on the symbolism of different objects and symbols. Consider what they represent to you personally and how they relate to your life and experiences.
Research and Study: If you have a particular interest in certain symbols, you can research their historical, cultural, and psychological significance. This can deepen your understanding and appreciation of them.
Be True to Yourself: Remember that there is no one "right" way to be a witch. Embrace the aspects of witchcraft that resonate with you and align with your psychological journey. Don't feel pressured to conform to traditional practices if they don't align with your beliefs.
Ultimately, the most important aspect of being a witch, regardless of your approach, is to find meaning, personal growth, and a sense of connection to the world around you. By focusing on the psychological and self-reflective aspects of witchcraft, you can create a deeply meaningful and fulfilling practice that aligns with your own values and experiences.

Please note that some information on this post comes from personal experience as well as conversations with my elders and other practitioners.
Introduction
Mirrors harbor a unique and paradoxical role, often existing at the intersection of clarity and obfuscation. Throughout the annals of history, these reflective surfaces have been the subject of mystic fascination and contemplation. Shrouded in a mysterious aura, mirrors are an integral component of various mystical practices across diverse cultures.
A seminal instance is observed within the African Yoruba tradition, where mirrors are emblematic of Oshun, the deity of beauty, love, and prosperity. Here, these reflective surfaces serve as conduits to divine insight, manifesting the ethereal into the perceptible. Parallel to this, in the indigenous cultures of the Amazonian Shipibo-Conibo people, mirrors - often represented by reflective surfaces of water - are perceived as gateways to understanding the complex layers of the universe, thus embodying a significant spiritual tool. Moreover, in many East Asian practices, mirrors carry deep symbolic significance and are fundamental in rituals aiming to ward off malevolent forces. Among the Ainu people of Japan, for instance, mirrors function as amulets, protecting the holder from supernatural harm.
Strawberry Moon - June 3, 2023
Grab your baskets and your moon jars, witches - it's time for the Strawberry Moon!
Strawberry Moon
The Strawberry Moon is the name given to the full moon which occurs in the month of June in the Northern Hemisphere. The name is taken from the ripening of those little red heart-shaped berries we find in so many summertime treats. Strawberries are typically ready to harvest beginning around the summer solstice, though this will vary depending on variety, planting times, and local weather. The Strawberry Moon, sadly, does not turn pink to match the berries.
Other European names for this moon include Honey Moon, Rose Moon, and Mead Moon. Indigenous names for the June moon include Blooming Moon (Anishinaabe), Green Corn Moon (Cherokee), and Hatching Moon (Cree).
What Does It Mean For Witches?
Full moons are excellent times for bringing wishes to fulfillment and plans to fruition, all the more so under one named after a prolific berry. This is an optimal time to make things happen!
Your intuition may be stronger than usual during this time, so pay attention to those little inklings and gut feelings that won't be ignored. They might be telling you something important. Dreams may also be more vivid, though not necessarily more accurate or revealing.
This is a time to explore things that catch your attention or pique your curiosity, and to let yourself be open to new ideas and new opportunities.
What Witchy Things Can We Do?
With a full moon in the sky and the summer solstice hot on its' heels, it's time to prepare for a full bloom. Here's hoping you've been nurturing those plans and seeds of growth you planted in the spring, because they're about to start flowering and the way is clear to sow the next stage of your plans. What they will be and what new prospects the summer will bring is entirely up to you.
With the moon in Sagittarius again this year, it's a good time to look ahead to the future. Think on the plans you have in process and let yourself dream of how things might turn out. If you're inclined to journaling, make a note of how things are going so far and how you hope they'll turn out. Pick your favorite divination method and do a reading for the month ahead. (Make sure you write that down too so you can check back later!)
This is a great time to go berry-picking or flower-gathering, so check your area for pick-your-own farms or farmer's markets with local produce. Have a picnic with friends or just enjoy a quiet afternoon with your own thoughts and a few favorite treats. Make a jar of sun tea or a sweet and summery berry salad. If you're partial to strawberries, indulge that sweet tooth!
Strawberries are also excellent ingredient in spells for love, beauty, fertility, and emotional healing. Create a charm for self-love or perhaps to attract a summer romance. Enchant your favorite makeup or skin care products with a glamour of confidence. Just as expectant mothers once carried strawberry leaves as a folk remedy for pregnancy pains, you can carry a clutch of them in your pocket to help heal a broken heart or assuage the pain of grief. A packet of strawberry leaves is also a potent good-luck charm. Snack on strawberries to bring fertile abundance into your life, whether you're looking for creativity or opportunity or perhaps hoping to grow your family this year.
Charge your crystals and spell jars and moon water under the light of Strawberry Moon to catch the energy of blooming flowers, ripening fruit, wishes coming true, and carefully-laid plans realized. (If you're planning to use it for any consumables, please make sure you're using fresh, potable drinking water rather than rain or runoff.)
Spend a little time reflecting on how your year has gone thus far. Try to focus on the things that have improved and how you've grown as a person and in your life journey. Reflect on your accomplishments and what you plan to do next. Take a moment to be unashamedly proud of yourself for everything you've done and for making it this far despite everything life throws at you.
Happy Strawberry Moon, witches! đđ
