he's not really used to this: the pointed depth of care that makes his skin crawl. despite being quite the romantic (and he'd definitely deny it if asked, by the way), he's so out of his element with this woman. ❝ atta girl, ❞ he replies, saturating and airy despite himself deliberately to be irritating, because it's the only thing that makes sense while luminance of sterile lighting brightens him up. he reaches over with his vacant hand, lifting a brow and nodding briefly as a gesture indicating he'd rather seek forgiveness than permission, before taking the paper out of her hands to set it face down onto the surface that splits them. piggybacking off of his general brazenness, his other hand pushes the container he's holding into her now empty ones that he fortunately didn't have to try very hard to convince her to take. when he's confident she won't drop it, he levels her with a small smile, bold and aggravating and so consciously levi. [ it's no wonder she finds him vexing. ] ❝ it's good, i was serious about that. got it yesterday from that bakery down the street that you and i were supposed to try but haven't made it to yet. had a croissant the other day with some kind of honey butter, it changed my life. ❞ levi snaps his mouth shut and thinks, wryly, that he talks more with her than he's probably ever spoken in his entire life. he's not sure he wants to unpack that right this second. ❝ sleep and sustenance deprivation when you work at a hospital sounds like a worse idea, but that's just me. i'm not a superhero though, so who knows, maybe that's normal for you people. ❞ it's teasing, but the look he gives her is earnest, latent with concern that doesn't quite fit in his chest, and he's reluctant to chase it away for not fitting in all the way just yet.
❝ you brought me a pastry? (okay, okay), fine, because i'm hungry. also, because you look cute. ❞ meredith suppresses the completely inappropriate giggle that nearly escapes her lips , she's acute aware of how handsome he looks, particularly after a night of running one of seattle's biggest restaurants, and the fact she kept him up by chatting about this & this surgery. ❝ seriously, i’m pretty sure distracting surgical interns counts as obstruction of medicine. or… flirting with intent to cause workplace misconduct. ❞ she says it quickly, almost defensively, though the smile threatening the corners of her mouth ruins the effect entirely. because the real problem here is that levi looks at her like this. like she’s interesting. like he’s enjoying himself. like he walked into this hospital tonight specifically to make her day harder in the most annoyingly attractive way possible. meredith exhales softly through her nose, eyes dropping toward the pastry box despite herself. ❝ honey butter? wow. okay, so this is premeditated ... ❞ her hand lifts toward the back of her neck, brushing loose strands of hair away while she tries very hard not to look too amused by this entire situation. she’s exhausted. she’s surviving exclusively on caffeine and adrenaline. and somehow levi is standing here talking about life-changing croissants like that’s a normal conversation to be having in a trauma ward. ❝ hey, i love that you’re acting concerned about my health while actively encouraging a caffeine-and-pastry-based lifestyle. very mixed messaging, levi. ❞ she opens the container dramatically, like she’s making some enormous sacrifice, though the grin she’s trying to suppress gives her away immediately. ❝ well, don't just stand there, i thought we were going to make this into a date ! ❞
❝ okay, welll . . . levi, that's that's a terrible idea . . . ❞ meredith’s voice comes out somewhere between amused and horrified, the kind of exhausted laugh that only really exists at three in the morning under fluorescent hospital she’s still holding a patient chart against her chest, fingers curled around the edge of it like it’s the only thing keeping her upright after a sixteen-hour shift. and yet, despite herself, she's smiling. which is annoying. because levi has been in this hospital for approximately five minutes and has already become a problem. ❝ you you cannot distract me, while i'm holding someone's spleen scan ... i feel like there’s probably a rule about that ! maybe in the hippocratic oath... ❞ she says it quickly, almost defensively, like if she keeps talking she won’t notice the way he’s looking at her. because that’s the real issue, honestly. (the looking.) the stupid, shameless, way he does it. meredith’s hand lifts toward the back of her neck, fingers brushing loose strands of hair away as she exhales softly through her nose. she’s tired. she’s running on coffee and surgical adrenaline and approximately four hours of sleep. ❝ also, bribing surgical interns is probably illegal, or unethical, or, you really get on my nerves you know that ? (....) FINE! (okay, okay), i'm accepting this because i haven’t eaten since yesterday and i’m ninety percent sure my blood type is caffeine now. ❞ @lycaea
𝘪𝘵’𝘴… 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘰𝘧𝘧. not when the halls still echo with it, not when every sharp noise feels like it might be 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 shot, not when your body hasn’t quite realized it’s allowed to be alive again. it’s strange— how the hospital looks the same, how the floors are still polished, how the lights still hum overhead— and yet everything feels 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠. meredith doesn’t remember deciding to stop walking. doesn’t remember when her hands curled into fists at her sides, or when her breathing turned shallow enough to make her chest ache. she just knows she’s standing there now, staring at april, watching the way the girl shakes her head like denial alone could rewrite what happened. ❝ 𝘢𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘭… ❞ (no, no you're wrong) almost wishes this could be something simple. something fixable. something they could cut open and 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫 her gaze flickers, not quite able to stay still, the walls, the floor, the space between them, anywhere but the memory of it. ❝ 𝘪 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦, 𝘪 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘰. a whisper of her voice as she relives it, the memory of the shooter. it doesn’t crack. but there’s something underneath it, something 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐲, something that lingers in the spaces between her words. 𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦, 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘴 . . . (she blinks, at she can feel her hand in april's, can feel her holding it so tight, meredith's fingers stretch and she thinks of sitting outside the or, in agony. with her.) ❝ 𝘸𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴𝘯’𝘵. april, we have to be strong. ❞ @excaliabur <3

GREY'S ANATOMY (2005 - present) 1.07 — The Self-Destruction Button
REVOLVER BY THE BEATLES PROMPTS * assorted lyrics from the album, adjust as necessary
let me tell you how it will be.
be thankful i don't take it all.
don't ask me what i want it for.
my advice for those who die? declare the pennies on your eyes.
you're working for no one but me.
look at all the lonely people.
who is it for?
where do they all come from?
where do they all belong?
look at him working.
what does he care?
nobody came.
no one was saved.
i'm still yawning.
please don't wake me.
leave me where i am.
i'm only sleeping.
everybody seems to think i'm lazy.
i don't mind.
i think they're crazy.
please don't spoil my day.
each day just goes so fast.
love me while you can.
a lifetime is so short.
what you've got means such a lot to me.
we make love all day long.
i'll make love to you if you want me to.
to lead a better life, i need my love to be here.
nobody can deny that there's something there.
someone is speaking.
i want her everywhere.
to love her is to need her everywhere.
i will be there.
in the town where i was born lived a man who sailed to sea.
our friends are all aboard.
full steam ahead!
cut the cable! drop the cable!
every one of us has all we need.
i know what it's like to be dead.
i know what it is to be sad.
she's making me feel like i've never been born.
who put all those things in your head?
you don't understand what i said.
no no, you're wrong!
i know that i'm ready to leave.
i've got something i can laugh about.
i feel good in a special way.
i'm in love, and it's a sunny day.
i'm so proud to know that she is mine.
tell me that you've got everything you want.
you don't get me.
you can't see me.
look in my direction.
she no longer needs you.
you want her, you need her.
you think she needs you.
he'll be there any time at all.
he does everything he can.
take a drink from his special cup.
you're feeling fine.
my head is filled with things to say.
when i get near you, the games begin to drag me down.
i want to tell you i feel hung up, but i don't know why.
i don't mind.
i could wait forever. i've got time.
sometimes i wish i knew you well.
i didn't know what i would find there.
did i tell you i need you every single day of my life?
you were meant to be near me.
i want you to hear me.
when i'm with you, i want to stay there.
turn off your mind.
surrender to the void.
𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥, 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐲, 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐤𝐞, it is not precise, not the precise tremor of a surgeon under pressure — not the controlled urgency she’s been taught to wear like a second skin, this is something else, something UNRAVELING and unpredictable, something that feels like it’s pulling her apart from the inside out. the secret she's kept so hidden, the promise she made to a member who doesn't remember her, the carousel of 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑥𝑖𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑠, tthe hospital hums around her, (voices, footsteps, the distant beeping of monitors) but none of it reaches her properly. it's all 𝚖𝚞𝚏𝚏𝚕𝚎𝚍 like she’s underwater, like she’s watching everything happen from somewhere just outside her own body. because the word is everywhere now. 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢. it echoes. it sticks. it 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 to let go. 𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐡. he says her name, steady, grounding, and for a moment, just a moment, it feels like something solid in the middle of all this chaos. derek’s voice cuts through the noise in a way nothing else can, sharp enough to pull her back into herself, into 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬.
❝ 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒'𝑠 — ❞ she begins: a hand dragging through her hair as if she can physically rearrange the situation if she just thinks hard enough, there's a panic, a high pitched ache. why didn't you tell me about your wife? why am i drowning and you can't save me? why did you lie to me? i love you. i need you.
❝ 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘢 𝘣𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘢 𝘵𝘶𝘮𝘰𝘳, 𝘰𝘳 a panicked breathe escapes before she can continue the rest of her thoughts. meredith exhales, her memory playing on repeat, the way ellis grey had yelled, had screamed, what did i say about bringing her here? she's a child, get her out of here. remove all memory of the ordinary daughter of the extraordinary dr. grey. 𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦, 𝘰𝘳 𝘢 𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘦𝘥, she knows how she sounds as she begs, but what else can she do ?
𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 derek, 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚘𝚠𝚎 𝚖𝚎 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚜. ❞ @neurosheph
That was amazing. You practice on cadavers, you observe and you think you know what you're gonna feel standing over that table, but...
i loved greys last ep :)
