More and more cities in Greece are endorsing the use of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in order to facilitate the transportations of citizens, reduce traffic congestion, minimize the environmental impact of transports, and prevent the risks of accidents.
 As modern transportation systems show significant requirements for safety, economy and efficiency, ITS aim to provide innovative services related to different modes of transport, by combining information and communication technologies. These services, such as digital information boards and traffic information boards, allow users to be better informed and make safer and smarter use of transport networks and available modes of transport.
  Making an overview across the Greek territory and focusing on cities with more than 50,000 citizens, there are eight cities, which have already adopted the use of ITS.
Last year in November, the CZECHBUS 2015 bus and public transport trade fair celebrated a small jubilee - its 5th anniversary. Event was (as usual) organized by Incheba Expo Praha company.
CZECHBUS is an interactive, specialized B2B fair with a focus on the issue of Czech and Central European and European road public transport. The goals are, among other things, to increase the sales of new buses in the Czech Republic and to support the stateâs export policy. Over the relatively few years of its existence, the event has gained a more than interesting position on the market. The theme of the trade fair addressed not only the exhibitors, but also primarily the professional visiting public. The fair was accompanied by a 3 all-day conferences, seminars and workshops.

New railway  âPatras â Pyrgos â Kalamataâ in the Region of Western Greece
On Sunday 14th of February the Railways Organisation ERGOSE and the Region of Western Greece will present the study for the new railway between Patras, Pyrgos and Kalamata towns. Mr. Athanassios Vourdas, ERGOSEâs CEO, will present the study to the public sector, the local authorities and the general public during the event that will take place in Pyrgos  Ileias.
Mr. Apostolos Katsifaras, the Head of the Region of Western Greece, stated: âthe re-opening of the railway line of Patras â Pyrgos â Kalamata, which was closed for several years, is imperative for the transport network of Western Greece, especially for Achaia and Ileiaâ.
The co-modality is a notion introduced by the European commission in 2006 in the field of the transport policy to define an approach of the globality of the transport modes and of their combinations. For the European commission the co-modality refers to a "use of different modes on their own and in combination" in the aim to obtain "an optimal and sustainable utilisation of resources".
This notion introduces a new approach to the European transport policy in which one do not seek, like in the 2001 white paper, to oppose transport modes one to another, i.e. opposing roads to its alternatives, but rather to find an optimum exploiting the domains of relevance of the various transport modes and of their combinations.
HSL provides sustainable mobility through open data, open APIs and open journey planner
 Concerning that most of the carbon emissions of transport and most of the energy consumption caused by road transport, Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) considered that the reduction of car driving and the increase of use of public transport, walking, cycling and car sharing are urgent needs. In this direction, HSL has planned the development of the Helsinki Region Transport System Plan (HLJ).
 HSL is a joint local authority, consists of seven member municipalities â Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen, Kerava, Kirkkonummi and Sipoo â which started its operations in 2010. HSL made the use of public transport attractive to commuters, as 345 million journeys are accomplished according to its services.
 The organisation of public transport and the improvement of its operation conditions, the development of travel fare and ticketing system, the provision of transport and passenger information and the organisation of tickets sales and tickets inspections are the main operations of HLJ. Despite all these useful operations, HSLâs most remarkable achievement is its âopenâ policy in data and applications (APIs), and its new open journey planner feature.
  Regarding open data and APIs, everyone is able to have free access in HSLâs transport data interfaces for applications and services, which support public transport usage and transport information, by creating a free HSL account. The open APIs are HSL Journey Planner API, HSL live API, Kalkati.net XML database dump and GTFS database dump. Additionally, the distribution and the re â use of open data is allowed. Furthermore, as the commutersâ needs are getting more exigent, HSL has invested on IBMâs Message Sight product in order to provide real time traffic data.
 Moreover and regarding the new open journey planner (JP), it is a mobile application that is planned to be released on March 1st, 2016. It will provide guidance during the journey and its operations will be based on real time traffic data. The use of real time traffic data could affect the routing results according to the current traffic situation in order to provide the best transport solution. The development of the open JP is being accomplished with the contribution of the Finnish Transport Agency and its coverage range will be national.
 As well as HSLâs services, GYMâs platform and its services will be accessible free to everyone and the data will be also open. This important feature will contribute to the cooperation with other JP providers across EU and will lead to the Pan â European character of GYM platform.
SHIFT²RAIL will be the first European rail initiative to seek focused research and innovation (R&I) and market-driven solutions by accelerating the integration of new and advanced technologies into innovative rail product solutions.  SHIFT²RAIL will promote the competitiveness of the European Rail Industry and will meet the changing EU transport needs. Through the R&I carried out within this Horizon2020 initiative, the necessary technology will be created to complete the Single European Railway Area (SERA).
In addition to the above, SHIFT²RAIL has set ambitious targets and a robust framework in which to meet them.  Specifically, the initiative aims to double the capacity of the European rail system, increase its reliability and service quality by 50%, all while halving the lifecycle costs.
What are the challenges?
Rising traffic demand, congestion, security of energy supply and climate change are some of the major issues that the European Union and the wider world are facing. Tackling these challenges will require the railway sector taking on a larger share of transport demand in the next few decades.
The European Commission is working towards the creation of a Single European Railway Area and has promoted a modal shift from road to rail in order to achieve a more competitive and resource-efficient European transport system. However, the share of rail on the European freight and passenger transport markets is still not satisfactory. EU research and innovation must therefore help rail play a new, broader role in global transport markets, both by addressing pressing short-term problems that drain rail business operations, and by helping the sector to achieve a stronger market position.
What results and benefits do we expect?
SHIFT²RAIL  will foster the introduction of better trains to the market (more comfortable, quieter and more reliable, etc.), operating on innovative rail network infrastructure in a reliable way from the first day of service introduction, at a lower life cycle cost, with more capacity to cope with growing passenger and freight mobility demand. All this will be developed by European companies thereby increasing their competitiveness on the global marketplace.
SHIFT²RAIL will also contribute to the paradigm for modal shift to attract the users to rail.  For the EU passenger this will mean more travel options, more comfort, and improved punctuality. For the freight forwarder/shippers this will mean that rail freight will become more cost effective, punctual and traceable as a shipment option.
Shift2Rail will contribute to:
1) Cutting the life-cycle cost of railway transport (i.e. costs of building, operating, maintaining and renewing infrastructure and rolling stock) by as much as 50%
2) Doubling railway capacity
3) Increasing reliability and punctuality by as much as 50%
SHIFT²RAIL will impact all segments of the rail market: High Speed/Mainline, Regional, Urban/Metro & Suburban, and Freight and make daily life easier for millions of European passengers and rail freight users.
Impact in the Sector
The proposed initiative will help boost the competitive edge of the rail supply industry, opening new market perspectives and offering significant employment and export opportunities. Railway undertakings, infrastructure managers and public transport operators will also benefit from innovations that drastically reduce infrastructure and operating costs. This should also help to reduce the subsidies paid out by national governments â estimated at âŹ36-38 billion in Europe in 2012.

Air pollution is a huge problem across Europe. Every year 400,000 people die prematurely because of poor air quality, but the European Parliament has the power to change that. This video shows what the air is like for Members of the European Parliament, in the EU quarter in Brussels, and invites them to take action by improving air quality laws at EU level.
In this video, we measured ultrafine particles, which are smaller than PM1 and between 20 nanometres and 1 micrometre, using a P-Trak particle counter. The results in the video show the number of particles, or PN, present in one cubic centimetre of air.
Our baseline on each graph - green line: 1,000PN/cm³ - was measured in Glomsø, Denmark with the same particle reader.
Ultrafine particles are the most dangerous form of pollutants but are to date unregulated in EU. Nevertheless reducing pollution levels of the larger particles, which are regulated, will also help decrease numbers of ultrafine particles present in our air.
GreenYourMove (GYM) is a European Research Project co-funded by LIFE, the EU finacial instrument for the enviroment - LIFE14 ENV/GR/000611.
GreenYourMove main objective is the development and promotion of a co-modal journey application to minimize GHG emission in Europe. GreenYourMove develops a multi-modal transport planner (both routing & ticketing system) considering all kinds of urban public transportation (urban and sub-urban buses, metro, tram, trolley, trains), where the user gets alternative routes combining more than one transport modes if necessary. The routes are the environmentally friendliest ones, since emissions are calculated for different scenarios.
Roadside air pollution has been worsening rapidly since 2008. In 2013, roadside Nitrogen Dioxide level reached the second-worst in Hong Kong history, with levels at roadside monitoring stations twice as bad as those found at general stations.
Roadside pollution is mainly caused by road transport within Hong Kong. One of the ways to improve the situation is known as Transport Management Solutions. It aims to reduce vehicular emission by improving traffic congestion and manage transport demand.
The Grow with Public Transport campaign is an initiative of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP). It targets policy makers worldwide and aims to raise their awareness of the urgent need for more and better public transport, highlighting the benefits of sustainable mobility.Â
With urbanisation set to continue apace in the years ahead, mobility is one of the biggest challenges facing cities worldwide. It is more important than ever to find efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly ways to transport the growing number of city dwellers and commuters. The public transport sector has set out the ambitious aim of doubling the public transport market share worldwide by 2025. More and better public transport will help boost green and inclusive growth, enhance competitiveness, and create green jobs.Â
It will also play a major role in protecting the environment and creating liveable cities. Now is the time for policy-makers to take action by establishing a supportive policy framework for urban mobility, developing sustainable transport modes and supporting investment in public transport. Public transport stakeholders are also taking action to help boost their own business.

Adriatic Ionian Macro Region - Welcome in a smart territory: Plan your trip within Adriatic macro region with TISAR
TISAR (http://www.tisar-project.eu/) faced the lack of a multimodal travel planning system in the Adriatic area. Such topic is very relevant in the Adriatic macro-region since mobility difficulties in the use of public transport are increased by the lack of information availa-ble in the area and the great lack of integration and interaction between the systems.
TISAR web platform (http://tp.tisar-project.eu/TisarPortal#1) is the personal âtravel assistantâ in a wide territory dedicated to the usersâ needs. Â It is a dynamic and multichannel platform supporting travelers in the Adriatic Ionian Macro Region. It is the meeting point between demand and offer on sustainable mobility issue.

The potential societal, environmental and economic benefits of multimodal travel information, planning and ticketing services are huge. Societal benefits arise from supporting passenger rights to information, including those with special needs. Environmental benefits result from itineraries optimised for environmental criteria and increased use of public transport and other modes, such as cycling and walking. Economic benefits include new business opportunities for service providers in a growing market.
EuTravel delivers an Ecosystem promoting and supporting Optimodal travel which is populated with tools that tap into existing mainstream IT travel reservation systems and sources of travel data.
On the road towards achieving its vision, the project EuTravel demonstrates an innovative multi- modal travel for a party of one or more travellers. This includes searching for and presentation of synchronised and âdependableâ itineraries across different modes, booking, payment, and trip entitlement issuance termed herewith Optimodal Travel. Optimodal travel implies that itineraries are constructed according to user preference whilst seeking optimisation of environmental performance. Environmental impact is presented with each itinerary option and users are able to order results according to environmental criteria. Optimodality defined as inter-modal travel optimised with respect to synchronisation between modes, passenger experience and rights and environmental performance is the central theme of this project.

Travel users: easy organise a door-to-door pan-European multimodal trip in accordance with their own set of criteria including environmental performance
Service Providers: easy and cost effective way to deliver multi-modal customised services
