The average Eridian lifespan is 689 Earth years. In the book, Rocky took 3 Earth years from his perspective to go from Erid to Tau Ceti (assuming Earth years, not Erid years.) In the book, Erid is said to be 10 light years from Tau Ceti and travel between the two would take at least 10 Earth years from Erid's perspective. Rocky has been alone at Tau Ceti for 46 Earth years. Rocky is 291 Earth years old (assuming from his perspective, not his age on Erid). Assume 3.2 Earth years travel time from Tau Ceti to Erid from Grace and Rocky's perspective. (See this post for that calculation.) Take the average human lifespan as 79 Earth years (US statistics). (I used Grace's nation of origin statistics assuming that Rocky would give a similar origin statistic and not an Erid-wide statistic - the worldwide average lifespan in 73.8)

Note that Eridians do not seem to develop at the same exact rate as humans. (See the end of this post for more.)

In the movie, Rocky and Adrian have been together for 186.3 Earth years (assuming from Rocky's perspective, not accounting for relativity).

Note that Eridians do not seem to develop at the same exact rate as humans. (See the end of this post for more.)

With the 186.3 years including time spent in space:

Rocky and Adrian got together when Rocky was 104.7 Earth years old or 12.00 lifespan years old. (291-186.3 = 104.7÷689×79 = 12.00)

From Adrian's perspective, they will have spent at least 26.15% of their entire relationship apart, over 1/4th. (10+46+10 = 66÷252.3×100 = 26.15)

And Grace should not be starving on the way.

Calculating Grace's Food for Journey to Erid

In the book:

Chapter 25, when Grace has bred Taumoeba-35 but not yet Taumoeba-82.5: The trip from Earth to Tau Ceti took three years and nine months.

Chapter 25, when Grace has bred Taumoeba-35 but not yet Taumoeba-82.5: All told, I have three months of real food left and about forty months’ worth of coma slurry. That works out to be just barely enough food to survive the trip home with full fuel and a bit to spare.

That is 43 months or 3 years and 7 months of food (3 months of real food and 40 months of coma slurry).

It is not clear if the 43 months of food/coma slurry is calculated as being rationed beyond the default servings.

Grace is 2 months short on food/coma slurry, which if rationed beyond the default servings would constitute as "just barely enough food to survive the trip home."

Chapter 25, Grace to Rocky: "You’ll reach Erid in under three Earth years."

Rocky in the Blip-A will take less than 3 Earth years to reach Erid.

Chapter 25, Grace on his journey to Earth: “I’ll experience four years, yes. Three years and nine months. Because time won’t be as compressed for me as it is for you.”

Chapter 25, Grace to Rocky: Your ship accelerates faster than mine. You’ll be moving closer to the speed of light.

The Blip-A's travel time would be less than the Hail Mary's for the same journey.

Chapter 26: Oh, and there’s the matter of the intelligent alien life-form I hung out with for a couple of months.

Grace and Rocky's total time together was 2-3 months.

Chapter 26: I have no idea what kind of world I’ll be returning to. Thirteen years have passed on Earth since I left, and they’ll experience another thirteen before I get back. Twenty-six years.

Supports the above line.

The events of the Hail Mary take a negligible amount of time.

Chapter 29, when Grace sees Rocky's ship again: It’s been almost three months since we parted.

Assume it takes 2-3 weeks to have bred Taumoeba-82.5 and for Grace and Rocky to have parted.

This leaves Grace with 40 months or 3 years and 4 months of food, assuming full portions.

Chapter 29, Grace to Rocky after reuniting: There’s no food. I have enough to last until we get to Erid and then a few months more.

It is unclear if this calculation is based on the remaining full servings of food/coma slurry (3 years and 4 months), or if this is calculated from partial servings of food/coma slurry.

If based on partial servings, then note that concerns of malnutrition or wasting or a hypothetical unhealthy state are not mentioned. Any partial servings used for the calculation can be assumed to provide sufficient calories and nutrition for the calculated time.

Assume that the "enough [food] to last until we get to Erid and then a few months more" is based on the same calculation as the "just barely enough food to survive the trip home" line, minus the 3 months since Grace and Rocky have been separated.

3 years 9 months rations - 3 months

Grace has rations for 3 years and 6 months for his journey to Erid.

A "few" generally implies 3-10 units.

The longest that Grace and Rocky's journey to Erid could take is 3 years and 3 months to leave "a few months" of rations for post-arriving on Erid.

This is supported by the distances explicitly stated in the book.

Chapter 5: The distance between Tau Ceti and Earth is 11.9 light-years.

Chapter 18: The distance between Tau Ceti and 40 Eridani is 10 light-years.

Therefore the Hail Mary would take less time to get from Tau Ceti to Erid than Tau Ceti to Earth.

As a rough (however scientifically inaccurate) estimate, if the distance to time ratios were to be consistent, then it would take 3 years and 1.8 months to get to Erid.

11.9 ly : 3.75 yrs (3y9m) = 10 ly : 3.15 yrs (3y1.8m)

We can assume that Grace and Rocky's journey to Erid will take 3.2 years.

3y1.8m = 3.15 yrs, 3y3m = 3.25 yrs, average 3.20 years.

In the movie:

Grace states that "I got enough food here to last me at least a couple years, maybe a couple more if I stretch it out?"

There is no further discussion of food resources in the movie.

The movie does not discuss the impossibility of Grace eating Rocky's food nor the possibility of Grace eating Taumoeba.

Here are some ideas for units of time for Erid and how they are used functionally. Anyone is free to use this, just please tag me if you do. I want to read it!

In-Universe, they are named by Grace so the reasoning is a bit lazy. This is on purpose, Grace is not the best at naming things ("Threeworld" anyone?). Out-of-universe, they are designed to be fairly self explanatory and easy to understand for readers. Better than arbitrarily naming things like "a cycle," or "a turn."

Worldbuilding Timekeeping Units

One Eridian day is 5.1 Earth hours. One Eridian year is 198.8 Eridian days or 42.245 Earth days. (198.8×5.1 = 1013.88 hours÷24 = 42.245 days)

Six Eridian days is called a sixday, functions as one day, and is 1 Earth day and 6.6 hours long. (6×5.1 hrs = 30.6 hours)

Six sixdays is called a sixweek, functions as one week, and is 7.65 Earth days long. (6×6×5.1 hours = 183.6 hours÷24 = 7.65 Earth days)

One Eridian year is 198.8 Eridian days or 33.13 sixdays or 5.52 sixweeks, functions as one month, and is 42.245 Earth days long. (198.8×5.1 hours = 1013.88 hours÷24 = 42.245 Earth days)

Six Eridian years is called a sixyear, functions as one "short" year, and is 8.33 Earth months long. (6×198.8×5.1 hours = 6083.28 hrs÷24 = 253.47 days÷(365÷12) = 8.33 Earth months) Is a unit of time between a month and a year. Ex: Grace's "school year" could be two sixyears long.

Six sixyears or 36 Eridian years is called a senaryann, functions as one "long" year, and is 4.16 Earth years long. [senary = Latin for "base six", ann = Latin root for "year", also senaryann sounds similar to the word "century"] (6×6×198.8×5.1 hours = 36499.68 Earth hours÷24 = 1520.82 Earth days÷365 = 4.16 Earth years) Is the typical rounding unit used to count time greater than 1 Earth year but less than 25 Earth years. Ex: It took less than a senaryann for Rocky to travel from Erid to Tau Ceti.

Six senaryanns is called a sixsenaryann, functions as one lifespan year (actually 2.86 Eridian lifespan years), and is 24.99 Earth years long. (6×6×6×198.8×5.1 = 218998.08 Earth hours÷24 = 9124.92 Earth days÷365 = 24.99 Earth years) Generally used when discussing lifespan events. Ex: Rocky was at Tau Ceti for almost 2 sixsenaryanns. Ex: Rocky is 11.6 sixsenaryanns old (291 Earth years). Ex: The average Eridian lives 27.5 sixsenaryanns (689 Earth years) Ex: Rocky and Adrian have been together for 7.45 sixsenaryanns (186.3 Earth years)

Comparative Lifespan Years

The average Eridian lifespan is 689 Earth years. Take the average human lifespan as 79 Earth years (US statistics). (I used Grace's nation of origin statistics assuming that Rocky would give a similar origin statistic and not an Erid-wide statistic - the worldwide average lifespan in 73.8.)

One Eridian lifespan year = 8.72 human years. (689÷79 = 8.72)

One sixsenaryann functions as one lifespan year (actually 2.86 lifespan years). (24.99÷689×79 = 2.86) Re-occurring celebrations like birthdays and anniversaries would take place every sixsenaryann. That would be an average of 27.57 birthday parties per Eridian lifespan, which I feel would be worthwhile.

Note that Eridians do not seem to develop at the same exact rate as humans. In the book, Grace's class is no more than 30 Earth years old or 3.43 lifespan years old (30÷689×79 = 3.43). He taught 8th grade on Earth (13–14 years old). That suggests young Eridians develop at about less than half the rate of humans in the pre-adulthood stage.

The first sixsenaryann (24.99 Earth years, 12.5 pre-adulthood lifespan years) could be used as a milestone for Eridian puberty.
