i've been thinking about this moment a lot. and more for the implications about ianthe than for gideon. because i think, we kind of expect this from kiriona. like, she's been putting on this whole "i don't care about anything anymore, what's to care about, i'm dead" thing, and that's fair enough, but it's hard to fully buy it because it's coming from someone who we know has such a big heart who's already spent her entire life fronting. so it's not really a shock that she would snap out of it when push came to shove and harrow might actually die right now.

but ianthe surprises me a little, pleasantly so. i mean a huge part of the appeal of ianthe is the whole "does she or doesn't she [care]" thing she's got going on. there's so few things set in stone that she absolutely does care about. we know that she cares about coronabeth. we know that she cares about accruing her own power, and will do absolutely despicable things to propel her own agenda. we know that she has... an obsession with harrow. they owe each other. they respect each other's power and skill. but ianthe's more personal interest in harrow is really easy to chalk up to her just seeing harrow as this supercharged-traumatized-gross thing that's more interesting to play with than anything else laying around. she wants things from her, finds her entertaining, but it's hard to pin any of her actions as an emotional attachment. until now.

ianthe drops to her knees. floundering with kiriona to hold harrow's body together, despite the big show she just made of giggling over how few fucks she gives about harrow dying.
