Mikasa’s impressions on Levi during the time...
The very first time Mikasa sees Levi was when he killed two titans that almost caught Armin and Eren. She was really surprised, and all she could say was “That’s..” while looking impressed. She probably recognized him since Levi was already known as humanity’s strongest soldier.
The second time she saw him, Mikasa wasn’t pleased with Levi’s behaviour. She got mad, and almost attacked him in front of everyone. She didn’t understand his actions and got a grudge against him.
The anger gets more visible in this scene when she talks openly about giving Levi a payback. Armin and Eren wasn’t upset with Levi, only her. Because of her blind devotion to Eren she took a long time to realize what happened in that day. And here it’s where i believe that she starts to think in Levi more frequently…first with the idea of geting revenge…but that changed…
The next time Mikasa express a thought about Levi is in the fight against Annie. When he start his attacks she got impressed on how fast Levi was. Again, his fight abilities got her surprise.
It’s a fact that Mikasa felt guilty for Levi’s injury during their fight with female titan. She remembers it not just in this moment above, but later too when she meets with Levi on the roof. She understood that her impulsiveness almost caused the loss of a valuable soldier in the battlefield. And that she had the responsibility of fight more to compensate that. She knew how much Levi was important to humanity, she recognizes it in this moment.
When Eren got kidnapped…again…Mikasa think about how she had success fighting with Levi by he side before, and like now she has failed. Once more, we can notice that she recognize Levi’s importance in a fight. And that if he was there probably they would fight togheter again and could win. This is the way Mikasa shows her respect and need, by recognizing Levi as someone they need.
Like i said before, Mikasa didn’t forget about her mistake that hurt Levi. And as soon as he’s back to the action, she asks him about his leg showing concern about his condition to fight. Mikasa won’t say “I’m sorry”, but she says “How’s your leg?” which pretty much shows her thoughts and guilt consciousness about Levi’s condition.
Can we stop a moment to appreciate this beautiful small bean looking angry to Levi cause he just made a deal with Reeves. She screamed his name before too “CAPTAIN LEVI” what gave me the impression that Mikasa thought that she could make Levi stop because she was the one saying his name out loud. How much power does she think she has over him? My guess? Mikasa thinks she has a lot. And she got angry when he did not listened her. But he was doing the right thing in that moment, now we already know that. She discovered that later too.
As i just said, she learned that Levi knows what he’s doing. And thanks to that she decided to trust him. Mikasa think Levi’s a weird person, that something may be wrong with him, but even so she choosed to follow his leadership. She knows that with him they can fight and win.
Another moment that caught me was this scene. They’re arguing about what to do with Rod Reiss, and Eren offers to kill himself by getting eaten for Rod titan. Mikasa of course don’t like the idea. But, what’s really interesting in this scene is that when Levi seems to agree she look to him afflicted and kind of “scared”. He didn’t look her back but starts to explain why he was taking that idea in consideration. Her expression makes me think she was waiting for him to disagree with that idea just like her.
For me this is one of the best Mikasa’s reaction, when she get totally shocked with Levi’s smile. She definitely didn’t expected that! She possibly thought that he would be angry with them. Again Levi surprises her. Mikasa need to know more about that chibi.
And the last open thought Mikasa show about Levi until now, when they were “fighting” for the serum and she starts to think that maybe Levi was getting out of strength. (My honest opinion: He wasn’t out of strenght, he just didn’t want to hurt her, he was trying to calm her down). And thinks that she can take the serum from him by force. But why she didn’t? What’s restraining her from taking it? Nothing. Levi wasn’t fighting back. Still she can’t hurt him, or take the serum from his hand. She’s conflicted, because she respects him, she trust in his judgment. But, at the same time she’s losing a dear friend. She even says “Please give me the serum”. For the girl who swored giving Levi a payback, she’s very hesitant and in doubt. That’s how much she grew to understand and recognize that man.
Now, a final observation:
When they recovered Eren from Annie, Levi ordered they to go away. Mikasa hesitate because she wants to kill Annie, but Levi says that they already rescued Eren, her “precious friend”, that was the objective. And call her out to her selfisheness about wanting to fight more without the need in the moment. “Unless the need to satisfy your desires…" Mikasa once more gets surprised with Levi’s words to her. She understands and try to explain herself to him, but the moment is interrupted when Levi realize that there’s something with Annie.
I like to see how the way she sees Levi changed over the time.
